I will be finishing up running this character from 48-50 tomorrow so it's time to talk build. I will be using it for farming but I don't want to land myself with an AE tailored build that is gimped in normal content. I found some old threads that suggested building for positional defense instead of typed, which I guess makes sense since I normally build up s/l/e/n to 32.5 but positional would cover fire damage also..

My build goals were idealistic and naive which I discovered about 10 minutes into my mids time for the night. I wanted to get my s/l resistance to the cap, build 32.5% melee/ranged defense, with good HP and around 150% global recharge. I noticed I was chasing way too many things and I ended up with a gimpy build that still didn't manage to reach all the goals... So I made some compromises. My only expense limitations are no purple damage sets or PVP IO's. Though that glad armor would be nice, as always...

I really just can't get numbers I'm happy with. I'm horrible at making builds for melee characters, the lack of an epic pool s/l defense shield seriously limits me. This is literally the best I could come up with.. Someone help me?

That was the most interesting build critique I've ever gotten.

Is that the best advice the scrapper board has to offer me? I thought you guys were supposed to be clever.

Disclaimer: the last time I played spines was about seven years ago. I reached level 8 and decided I would rather play claws instead.

To pick out one area to critique and possibly give you some ideas, one of the advantages of spines/fire is that you get two very nice damage auras. What's with your slotting of those? Procs aren't something you should steer clear of, but think of it this way: every fifth tick, the proc has a chance to fire. Every tick, however, benefits from damage enhancement. If you intend to use musculature alpha, that would explain it, but if not I would say slot them better for damage enhancement before worrying about procs. I know you're looking for defense too but scirocco's is simply a better set for aura powers than erad and oblit. It gives good damage and end redux, and also a proc.

Spines/FA is a fun set, but can feel lacking in damage when compared to a SS/FA Brute. The other issue is the lack of a taunt that leads to enemies running away when their morale breaks.

That said, if you are determined to play it, there are a couple effective ways to build it. Generally, defense bonuses mean you sacrifice recharge because most sets don't have both.

If you want to be as survivable as possible, positional defense is the best way to go.

If you want to be survivable enough in most content with a bit more offense, S/L and E/N are the way to go. I posted a build with 32.5% to both in another thread.

If you want to be effective in AE farming, make a second build template just for that. Go for fire defense and recharge only. Don't try to make a build for everything because you will be lacking in one area if you do.

I've never heard of building for fire defense only being a desirable thing to do, in any circumstances. I always thought the enemies in fire farms did only part fire damage and part smashing or lethal damage... I could be wrong though.

You can customize the attacks your enemies have. Incinerate is a pure fire damage attack and you can set the enemies to have only that, but the XP and tickets will be reduced. You would have to add some other attacks. I don't feel like looking up all of the fire damage attacks right now, but I'm sure there are plenty of Blaster attacks that are pure fire damage if the Fiery Melee set lacks them.

Besides, the game only looks at your highest defense category when determining if an attack will hit. If an attack does smashing and fire damage and you have 45% fire defense and 10% smashing defense, only your fire defense will be considered.

I know how defense works, I should have specified that I don't make my own farms and I'm 99% sure that the two I use both have enemies who do part smashing and part fire damage. That being the case, it seems much more practical to build up s/l defense (if I'm not building positional) than fire since it can be helpful in places besides the AE building (and be useful while I'm in there, too.)

It seems odd to call something with S/L damage a fire farm. I don't mean this against you TwoHeadedBoy, but rather the people who made these farms.

I'll have to talk to my friend about it, his is a clone of one he was using previously (he recreated it and set the bosses not to rez) and I alternate between the two (I like the rezzing bosses solo, because I spawn them as LT's.)

I know it took him a bit to figure out how to get the exp/ticket value where he wanted it, but this was quite a while ago and we didn't really talk specifics since I'm completely oblivious to that part of the game.

Long as there's a thread here, I just hit 50 myself and want to make a farming build. This is my first 50, and I sort of made him for farming before I really knew what all it was like, but since he's here I think I'll go with it. So far I'm still doing +0 x8 and relatively happy with it. Faster dead is faster farmed, far as I'm concerned. So, with that said, and mentioning again that this is my first, and my first time trying to plan a build, this is what I was considering for just self farming. I recognize that I completely ignored defense in favor of sucking down insps, but my experience has mostly been at +0 and that's worked for me. An occasional death is mother nature's way of helping me get the debt badges.

So, aside from single pieces costing more than my entire current budget, any thoughts? Am I really that heavily going in the wrong direction aiming for pure damage and recharge?

ETA: I set up the build for once I can afford to fill it. I dropped Super Jump for Stealth, and Tactics for Rise of the Pheonix. The latter is a meh choice, but did I really need the extra toggle? And 7% acc wasn't that big a deal compared to how much the various sets were adding to my attacks. Also dropped the purple sets for Positron and another Oblit for now. I need to check that, I may have 1 too many 5% recharge.

Tactics' to-hit bonus is potentially more beneficial than Accuracy bonuses, depending on what you farm.

If you're up against level 54 enemies, and are +1 level shifted so that they are +3 to you, then with no to-hit bonuses and just base 1.0 accuracy attacks, you need +97.91 accuracy bonus (Including both Slotting and Set Bonuses) to get to 95% chance to hit.

If you have tactics giving you +7 to-hit bonus, the amount of accuracy you need to get to 95% is only +72.72, a signifigantly smaller figure.

Now, I don't know where your slotting and set bonuses leave you, and it might be a non issue, but the way to-hit and accuracy interact with each other can make just a few points of to-hit very signifigant. Now, mind you, for my part, it pains me that I can never find the slots to 6-slot Rise of the Phoenix, and tend to be loathe to hear of anyone skipping it altogether, so if you want my personal opinion, I'd say roll with it. The difference in rewards-per-damage-output between +2 and +3 enemies is fairly marginal, and it takes much less accuracy bonus/slotting to reach 95% against +2's (69.64 without any to-hit buffs). And being able to self-rez is occasionally useful and or fun.

Was going to create a new critique my spines/fire build thread, but since there's already one going, I thought I'd throw my creation into the ring.

Pros:
-all the FA powers
-hasten
-nice substantial slotting for most dps powers
-balanced positional defenses
-good max end and max hp bonuses
-no purple or pvp enh

Cons:
-boring ancillary powers
-no travel power (whatever, use a jetpack)
-lowish global recharge

Defense Totals:
Melee: 32%
Ranged: 30.4%
AoE: 25.4%

I wouldn't mind squeezing another recharge into hasten somehow, and a couple other powers would benefit from 1 more slot, but all in all I'm pretty happy with the stats on individual powers. A lot of the builds I saw sacrificed power effectiveness for set bonuses, but this build manages to keep healthy power effects across the board and still get pretty solid defenses in all three positions.

I was really hoping to do something interesting with the AP powers, but I just didn't have enough slots to get anything out of them. Focused accuracy and physical perfection are undoubtedly useful, but just not very exciting to use. I thought maybe dark mastery with its -tohit and immobilize would synergize well, but there's always a trade off.
