Slightly OT: Why do some pixel defects spread?

Hi, everybody,

sorry for asking a slightly off-topic question, but I thought that maybe one of you could answer this:

New TFT monitors sometimes have a pixel (or sub-pixel) defect, being always lit or always dark. That kind of defect is introduced during production of the panel. If it's just one pixel the defect often is rather unnoticeable and usually doesn't limit the usage of the monitor. Such defects do not spread.

But sometimes pixels can get damaged later on, e. g. by a mechanical force. If that happens, at first maybe only a few pixels are affected. But this kind of damage does grow over time. More and more pixels next to already damaged ones will also stop working.

I wonder what causes the second type of pixel damage to spread to neighboring pixels. Do the defective cells leak anything out? Is there some kind of domino effect going on?

Does anyone of you know? Thanks for any information on this,
