Hello forum,

So I was an old CoX player that left because my computer was performing very shoddily with it, and I recently acquired a new more powerful computer and reactivated my account. Now my buddy has the exact same computer build as me, same model, memory and everything. He's running the game with the recommended settings and clocks around 45fps everywhere, with minor drops when he runs a massive farm. I normally clock around 45fps, but as soon as I walk into a mission door and walk out again, I clock around 5fps for the rest of my gameplay, and my 45fps isn't stable in any way shape or form, randomly dropping to 30fps and even 18-22fps at some times.

Here's my spec's

You have 8% free space on your hard drive. Yes, it's close to 40 Gigs, but many windows routines don't look at the amount of the free space, only the percentage. With that little free space it's very likely Windows is constantly hitting the hard drive as you play.

I'd recommend first freeing up quite a bit of space on the hard drive. Windows wants at least 20% free space for many tasks, and more free space is better.

Did your friend also install the game through Steam? If not, you may want to uninstall the game and install it cleanly through a download from the PlayNC site instead of using the Steam download. We've seen various problems with some of the Steam installs since they started offering it, so it's something to at least consider.

A HiJackThis log would be helpful to see as well since that would help us see what's running while you are gaming that may be affecting you.

The other suggestion I'll make is to regularly type /unloadgfx in the chat box. Since you say it starts when you exit a mission, I'd recommend typing it right before exiting and again after exiting the mission.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

Will try moving the install over off steam into the PlayNC launcher exclusively, then get back to you guys.

So a quick update:

Freed up to 23% freespace on hard-drive. No improvement

Installed game through NCSoft Launcher in default folder. No improvement

Used /unloadgfx constantly. No improvement.

My next goal is to nerf every non-windows process and see what comes from that.

Again, sorry for the double posting, but I recently tried the whole "nerf the startup" solution, but that didn't work out. Only improved the framerate by 3fps, and even that could have been wishful thinking. I also notice I hit massive framerate drops when I go into large rooms in missions, and then that lag persists throughout the mission map, regardless of where I am.

Have you tried toning down your graphics settings? Mobility 5400 isn't exactly a performance video card. Its the very lowest end of the discrete gfx card market.

For starters, I would not have world detail set to very high. Looking at your settings, I'm guessing they are set to abit too optimistically.

Perhaps you should set your graphics the same as your friends' laptop then go from there.

H: Blaster 50, Defender 50, Tank 50, Scrapper 50, Controller 50, PB 50, WS 50
V: Brute 50, Corruptor 50, MM 50, Dominator 50, Stalker 50, AW 50, AS 50
Top 4: Controller, Brute, Scrapper, Corruptor
Bottom 4: (Peacebringer) way below everything else, Mastermind, Dominator, Blaster
CoH in WQHD

Thats what's getting me the most. I have made sure my settings are near identical to my friend's. I sat down next to him and copied everything over, even the Catalyst settings. I even rolled back my drivers to get a version as close to him as possible (he's running 8.680.0.0, I rolled back from 8.85.0.0 to 8.691.0.0). I'm gonna try and acquire the 8.680 drivers, and report back after that.
