Kat/da build in need of help

ClawsandEffect

recently hit 50, and thought i'd plan out a build that hopefully works, however, i don't really have much clue when it comes to builds, especially IO slotting which still seem like some newfangled part of the game to me. Anyways, was hoping i could get some feedback on my build, pointing out whatever massive mistakes i've made in both power selection and IO slotting. Any advice would be appreciated

Read this thread: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=189427

It is about my BS/DA build, but slotting-wise Broadsword and Katana are interchangable. The good and bad points of the build possibilities are discussed fairly extensively throughout the thread.

Especially pay attention to Werner's input in the thread, as he has a Kat/DA build that surpasses mine by quite a bit. The thread is a little outdated now, but the basics that are discussed in it are still valid.

Gambler's Cut is the better level 1 attack for Katana, and the Hecatomb proc should go in that instead, because it will be your most frequently used attack. Other than that, just about everything I would tell you is in the thread I linked already.

Your hit points are low, your recharge is low, your defense is low, your damage is low, your accuracy is low, you're missing some key IOs (e.g., Theft of Essense proc in Dark Regeneration), and the budget is fairly high due to the purples. I'm not saying it sucks, but there is a lot of room for improvement.

Now, what Claws and Effect and I have done (soft cap) is just ONE way to approach a Sword/Dark. There are other schools of thought, such as just picking up just a reasonable amount of defense (say, 32.5%) and focusing on other aspects of the build. Pros and cons of our approach are discussed in the thread. That said, with I20 and/or enough budget, common down sides like low accuracy can be eliminated.

As a couple I19/I20 references, here's my current Katana/Dark build. I'm using the T3 Barrier though I will probably pick up Rebirth and maybe even Ageless for comparison. The budget on this one would make most people choke, though, so that's probably its big disadvantage.

And here's what I consider a very good budget build that hits what I think are the more important parts of a survival-oriented Katana/Dark. It's by Ramia Angriffe with a couple modifications by Iggy Kamakaze.

I feel bad just dumping a couple builds on you without explaining what's going on in yours, but I really need to get to work. If you have questions after reading the thread and looking at what we're doing, let me know.

Thanks so much for the feedback, Im glad someone pointed out it was rubbish before i went and tried it.
That first build looks completely impossible to make, with lvl 53 hami-o's and crazily impossible to get gladiator's armor, so thats probably a tad out of my budget.

The second one looks good and well rounded (and a hell of alot cheaper), but as I showed by my first attempt at a build, im not too sure what im looking for. I was assuming oppressive gloom was too useful to skip, but i guess im wrong, and Im not sure what advantage you gain from having both fly and superjump.

It depends on what point your build is at defense-wise. If you are softcapped and almost never getting hit, then Oppressive Gloom will end up doing more damage to you than enemy attacks. If you are NOT rocking that much defense, Oppressive Gloom is still damn useful, because it pretty much takes any and all minions out of the fight. Interesting tip that I learned when running with my wife's DA/Fire tank: OGloom will stack to stun anything short of an EB.

Also, I dropped it on my main build in favor of Cloak of Fear, but I'm working on a second build for exemping purposes that will be getting it back. If I drop below level 47 while exemping, I lose a BIG chunk of my set bonuses, so I won't be softcapped at lower levels. In that situation, Oppressive Gloom will be very useful again.

You can run Combat Jumping and Hover at the same time, and their defense will stack. Also, if you are hovering, anything that punches through your KB protection will just make you do a backflip, regardless of the magnitude of the KB. SO instead of flying across the room in cases of extreme KB, you will just do a flip and be back in the fight much faster.

My BS/DA isn't quite softcapped anymore, due to a nerf to the IOs I was using for a good chunk of my ranged/AoE defense. I believe I'm sitting at 44% ranged, and around 41% AoE. For all practical purposes, unless I'm watching my combat window like a hawk, I never notice a difference from when it was softcapped.

Keep in mind that you also have solid resistance, including good Psi resistance, and the best self-heal in the game, so if you can't manage to hit the softcap, it's not the end of the world. Anything over 30% will increase your survivability quite a bit.

I can see why you might want hover and combat jumping, im just not sure why you would need the travel powers fly and superjump. I mean, its not as if you normally fight with either of them on. or are they just mules for -knockback enhancements.

When you say you dropped ogloom for cloak of fear, this build has neither. Is that a concern? I was assuming death shroud made the fear effect pretty useless, and pretty much wrote it off. I guess the -acc would be the useful part

And is there any way to find out how end hungry it'll be. I mean, i can see the total recovery and end drain, but I don't think it takes using attacks into account, so I'm not sure. Other than that, it's a pretty tasty build. Thanks again for the advice

I think they're just set mules. Note that the set gives you ranged and AoE defense, which is one of the major things we're after. I didn't pick up Super Jump myself, as I got my bonuses elsewhere.

Oppressive Gloom can do more damage to you than it prevents when you're at the soft cap. It WOULD be nice to have Cloak of Fear. However, when you're sitting at the soft cap, it doesn't do much for you, plus it costs a ton of endurance, plus it takes a power pick. So Ramia I guess decided it wasn't worth it on a cheapo build, and it makes sense to me.

The endurance use shown does not take attacks into account. I typically aim for about 3 EPS MORE than the toggles in recovery. You'll note that I don't have anywhere NEAR that on my build - 1.94 EPS from toggles, 3.64 EPS recovery. Yet my build has sustainable endurance. What's going on? Well, I took the Cardiac alpha, so I'm getting a big endurance discount on my attacks. The recovery doesn't count the contribution of the Performance Shifter proc or the Panacea proc. Conserve Power isn't taken into account, and even though it has a long recharge, it still helps. Finally, I never really need all my toggles. If I'm fighting an AV solo, I won't need Tactics to hit them, and I'll want to turn off either Death Shroud (to keep feared minions alive to fuel Dark Regeneration) or Cloak of Fear (because I'll be killing the minions with Death Shroud and it won't fear anything else). In regular missions, you attack more slowly than you do when fighting an AV, even if it feels like you're constantly attacking. There's time between spawns. Blues drop. I basically almost never hit Conserve Power, even when fighting, say, Carnies.

Given the complexities of calculating endurance use in this case, I can't say for sure that Ramia's build is endurance sustainable. But it IS running the Cardiac Alpha, and appears to have better net recovery than mine, so I'm going to guess yes. I'm going to guess that endurance is a non-issue.

Now, if you're not planning to solo AVs or pylons without inspirations, you could probably afford the endurance to add Cloak of Fear to Ramia's build. The trouble is figuring out what to drop.
