Global channels

Hey All

I've noticed that on some global channels, some folks are broadcasting their current character's name (and other info) alongside their global handle. For example:

Quote:
RoboTank: [Shadowcall, lvl44 Stalker] Blah blah blah
RoboTank is my Global handle, but in this example, I'm logged in as my Stalker. Blah blah blah is the message I'm sending (not far off the quality of most of my communication either ) The 'message' itself will always vary, but the info part is always consistent (with the character's details)

This is presumably done through a bit of neat macro / slash command wizardry (the exact format seems to differ) , but for the life of me, I can't figure out how people have set this up. I can't imagine folks are constructing this information each time they send a message, so I presume that they've got a macro or bind that starts a message on the relevant channel, adding in the character info, but doesn't send it - allowing them to add the actual message content themselves.

I hope I'm making sense here...

Can anyone point this duffer in the direction of some notes on how to do this ? (I did try searching for info on this, but couldn't find anything here, or at the various Wikis)

Cheers, @RoboTank

Aha, thanks TameDragon. It was the "beginchat" slash command that I was missing.

6 years in this game, and I'm still learning how to use it

Now the question is, why would you want to do so? At least for your local name.

I suppose I can see the value of broadcasting your current character's archetype and level if you're really into TFs and below 45, but why waste valuable chat line space with the local name? It's not as if people have to open the team finder and search for you to add you after communicating in chat... (since they can click on your name and invite you, even through your global)

I just put side and name in mine, and only in my SG's global channel (we have 3 SGs and 3 VGs so can't just use the SG channel). If I'm on another server, I put side and server. Most of my toons on Victory are known by name as to what they are by the rest of the SG.

For wider channels I don't bother.

It's true. This game is NOT rocket surgery. - BillZBubba

Name, especially for an established character, can help tell powerset info as well.

Interestingly enough I get the feeling that a decent number of people do not know this. When I'm forming or joining a team through global channels I frequently get people either telling me their local name (if I'm forming the team) or asking me for my local name (if I'm joining their team). This implies to me that a lot of people don't realize that you can use the global name either to invite someone or to find their local name.

It's also partially legacy from when you couldn't just click on a person's name in chat and invite them. At one time, you did have to have the local name to invite to a team.

Because sometimes I LIKE my name. Most of my characters have joke or pun names, and I often get comments when someone sees the name . . . I have names like, "Ohm Depot," "Flora the Explorer" and "Sultan Battery."

. . . and "valuable chat line space"? When did that become valuable?

LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

Believe it. I've had to point this out to some vets recently. It's really not well-known.
