Defense Question
No. The defense used is the best defense of all the attack types the attack has. In this case, 20%.
If you had 25% ranged and 20% psionic then it'll be 25%.

Tempus unum hominem manet
The game only makes one defense check, using the highest defense % that applies to the incoming attack. Attacks are generally tagged with both positional and damage type, although some psi attacks do not have a positional tag, only damage type. These are usually the ones that are clones of the Mind Control powers.
So, if you have 40% ranged defense, and 20% smashing/lethal defense, and get shot at by a Council minion, your ranged defense % will be checked. If that minion tries to brawl you, it will check against your S/L defense instead.
Note, damage types dealt by the power have no bearing on what attack types it will be marked for.
Fireball for example, deals fire/smashing damage, but is only marked Fire/AoE

"Where does he get those wonderful toys?" - The Joker
Many will consider this a newb question but I never thought to ask it before.
How is defense calculated when it comes to Melee, Range and AoE defense, and Damage type defense.
Example:
I have 20% defense to Ranged, and I have 20% psionic defense. Does that mean I have 40% defense to a ranged psionic shot?
Or does it do a calculation of Ranged defense, then a second calculation of Psionic defense?
Or is there some other formula?
Is Melee, Ranged and AoE defense weighted differently? I mean if I have capped Melee Defense does that mean I'll be nearly unhittable to melee attacks regardless of damage type?
