Sidekicks and their story

Dear everybody:

I am currently thinking of a new character for when i19 comes out to build him specific for the incarnate system. However his original story must be as a sidekick/admirer of my main character [which is my strongest and will become an incarnate first] who is an illusion/radiation controller.

Now costume and name arent a problem as i can easily come up with them once an actual feeling for my character is built, however a good story for a sidekick becoming a hero is actually quite hard to come by. Thus i am asking you people for some help on a good sidekick story as inspiration for him.

Now so far these are the stories which i can think of for him.

  • After years of training in Ultimate Damzs HIT [hero in training] squad, he is asigned missions to keep peace in the small local areas of paragon city [low level]. After getting more powerfull than all the rest of the squad, he is allowed to go and answer the distress beacons that has been sounded off in faultine, talos island and striga island while Ultimate Damz is off protecting the city from arachnos invaders. After becoming a fully qualified HIT squad leader now, he sets off in the direction that Ultimate Damz was last seen [fighting against invading praetorians with his potential unleased - incarnate-] to fight alongside the hero that was once his teacher.
  • A young boy with powers that he did not know he had. Whenever he got into distress his memory goes blank and his huge power is unleased [nova]. Upon saving kings row from certain destruction from his power, Ultimate Damz decided to take him under his wing and teach him how to harness and control his power so he could help others. Doing as Ultimate Damz says as first, he soon starts to question whether Ultimate Damz has what it takes to ultimately protect paragon city from the Praetorians while he still refuses to kill somebody believing that anybody can turn a new leaf. Thus this young boy turns into a vigilante, fighting the good fight without any boundaries and out of his masters control. Will the promise of the ultimate power in the form of incarnates push him over the edge into the darkside as Ultimate Damz feared?
Basically they are the only two which i can think of at the moment, so can people post me any of their stories for a good sidekick character for which i can take inspiration from?

Thanks in advance if so!

I'd say you're overthinking this a bit. My initial reaction to the question was "What's there to tell?" in the sense that his being a former sidekick and current freestanding hero is enough, but you have a point. We can do better. Let's see if I can make a story out of this no-story.

What I'm thinking of is something less... Elaborate. Your sidekick character, whom I will call "the Kid" to make things simpler, started out as somewhat of an intern for your hero, whom I will call "Damz" for the same reason. That's your beginning.

The Kid spent long years fighting alongside Damz, taking in his wisdom, his courage and his ability to handle overwhelming odds without panic or desperation. As the power and ability of Damz grew, the Kid found himself in a constant struggle to keep up. He wanted to help, or failing that, to at least not be a liability. For years, he always felt like he was holding Damz back, always having to be rescued and assisted. What the Kid never realised, however, was that while Damz was always growing ever stronger, the Kid himself had grown in power, as if almost unintentionally.

One day when his mentor was otherwise occupied, an old threat reared its ugly head. "The Villain" returned - an old threat the two had just barely vanquished years ago. With his mentor unable to help, the Kid despaired, remembering how horribly powerful the Villain had once been. Diving into action nevertheless, the Kid realised that the Villain's power had not grown at all since their last encounter, whereas the Kid was now significantly stronger. Making quick work of what was once an unbeatable foe finally opened his eyes to the fact that he, too, had become a hero in his own right. Not yet at the level of his master, perhaps, but at a level far greater than even his master had once been.

With the permission of Damz, the Kid chose to become a full-fledged super hero and to seek his own destiny. Damz had long since taught him all he could. It was time for the Kid to grow up and perhaps in turn teach the next generation of heroes a trick or two of the many he never realised he knew.

How does that sound?

I really like Tow's reply.

However, your second idea has great potential...as a story telling device. If you're intending to roleplay the characters, it pits the two of them against each other in very dramatic ways because of the moral differences between them, and it presents fantastic opportunities for interpersonal conflict. To a reader. It would make a great story, or a novel. How you would roleplay it is another thing altogether.

If you can figure that out, go for it!! I'd love to see it!

EDIT: I suppose I should offer a suggestion, regardless of how paltry it is.

You could also consider the option that they have worked together for so long that Ultimate Damz has somewhere along the line lost sight of the fact that his sidekicks are growing in potential. Regardless of the fact that he's a hero, he's still human (or so we assume), and he has flaws. This might engender some resentment among his sidekicks, and eventually, when they realize their full potential (they don't really need him to treat them like children), one of them might decide that it's time to step out on his own. He doesn't have to necessarily do so with disrespect, and he can even do so with a certain amount of sadness: remembering what Damz used to be like. He might make it his quest to honor that memory, and get Damz to remember it as well by setting an example.
