Total Computer/System Crash w/ City of Heroes

Granted Im not a technical wiz or even technjically savvy for the most part, but really not sure whats going on here. Just updated the latest ATI Drivers, and still, when Im in AE running various missions, I'll run for about 30 minutes to an hour or so, then have my system totally crash. No warnings, no pop ups, just boom- black screen, computer off- and this only happens when running City of Heroes.

I was thinking my system might be overheating and shutting itself down? I honestly don't have a clue. Any advice?

(I am not running in Ultra mode or even high graphics settings- just recommended)

System Specs:

Windows 7
Intel Core i7 CPU
ATI Radeon HD 5850
6 GB of RAM

The complete system crash is a bit troubling....

An overheat is certainly possible. And really, with those stats, you can run UM cranked to the max with no problem. My system is like that and I run all over Praetoria looking at all the shiny.

Anyways, do you play any other games comparable in graphics to CoH? If you do, it might be woth noting if you can get them to crash too and you might mention what they are here.

Beyond that, you might consider getting CPU-Z and GPU-Z (both are free) and using them to monitor your CPU and video card, particularly when playing. They can tell you what your temps and voltages and such look like under load and perhaps pinpoint any issues there. You might also get a copy of Furmark. It's a free OGL video benchmarking and stress test program for video cards. It would work as a good alternative to loading up the game with CPU-Z and GPU-Z running. In fact, it can probably stress your system much more than CoH can. Try that and see what you get.

It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.

My first thought is your PSU may be overloaded on one of its power rails.

The MB power lead includes a voltage sensing control line and if that is out of spec it will shut the system down in the manner you describe.

What make and power rating is the PSU?
Bear in mind a quality 600W PSU will probably outperform a budget 1000W one. With a budget one the power rating is often quoted as the sum of the power ratings of each rail even if it is not capable of driving them all to that level simultaneously.

Are your graphics card and MB connectors drawing power from the same power lead even if not they may still be drawing from the same power rail but if they are you may be able try swapping connectors if its a modular PSU or try the second GPU conector if there is one.
Check your PSU fan is clean and spinning freely (do the same for the CPU and GPU fans whilst you're at it).
What else is being powered? - obviously at least one hard drive and probably also an optical drive and your case fans. Anything else - try disconnecting - if that solves it you will need to upgrade the PSU.
If you have access to a desk fan try setting that to cool the PSU as well - again if that makes a difference this would once again point to needing to upgrade but you may have a usable option in the meantime.

Also another free possibility - try reseating the MB and GPU power leads - a poor connection could cause this - unlikely but as I said it costs nothing.
