WW/BM smartphone app
This is my verdict on these apps, and taking up development time;
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

I'm all for this idea. /signed a thousand times. I would love to be able to do market stuff while I'm stuck at work.
If all you think about is what you could be doing in City of Heroes, it's officially time to stop playing.
Semi-recently, WoW players got a smartphone app for accessing whatever it is they call their black market, and I'm green with envy.

I'm working an overnight shift where this could come in handy. It would be pretty sweet to have those three posi blast pieces waiting for me when I get home in the morning, and I'm sure anyone else could think up an RL situation where it would come in handy for them as well. |
Gotta keep up with the Jones'. Whatta ya think? It would be pretty sweet, wouldn't it? |
Let me guess Munki Lord. Because my post happened to be after yours, you automaticlly think I meant you.
This is not WoW. Auctions in this game do not expire. Nor does the money received from auctions expire in any way. We don't need to be able to keep track of such things while not ingame. Incidentally I'd argue WoW players don't either and it's just Blizzard seeing an opportunity to gouge some more money out of their players and taking it, but that's neither here nor there. Point is, we don't need it. Most of us quite probably don't want it and a sizable number of us would never find a use for it if it was implemented.
Time could be better spent elsewhere. New content, revamping old content so it doesn't look so dated... hell they could have another go at making pvp not horribly imbalanced, and I'd get more use out of that than I would out of this despite that I never pvp ever.

I would find it useful and I would use it so I'm all for this idea.
So, for this app to work, would we have to have ALL of our characters logged out RIGHT NEXT TO the auction house NPC's? Or would we have to log in to each character, then mail stuff to a character who is logged off by the NPC?
I mean, in CoH, our characters have individual wallets with the ability to send chunks to each other, as opposed to a system with a "Global Bank". Would that interfere with this being easy to do?
I'm seeing a problem here in that you would have to be able to access the log-in server and the Global Email and the Market. Dang near everytrhing except actual ingame combat and visiting one's contacts for missions.
How much can you expect from an App? App-arently, enough to work the Market in another game with a similar, but different, set-up. *shrug*
I'm thinking that instead of plunking down the money for a fancy cell phone that does more than just send/recieve calls, I should just buy a good laptop that can run CoH on minimal graphics settings and grab a signal.
I already goof off enough at work though.
As to "waste of development time": If they were going to do this, they would do it by budgeting out how much money they could make selling the app or the service, then funding the development from that, and hiring new developers to do it, so it would not in any way cost development time from the main game (or at least, it would pay in more than it took out).
I actually think this would be a lot more viable in CoH than it would be in a game like WoW, for the simple reason that WW/BM slots are finite in CoH. In a game where you can easily have 645 auctions up personally, an iphone app is going to be pretty useless, frankly. In a game where you have 10-15 per character, it's actually pretty practical.
That said, I doubt I'd pay money for it, so I don't know that there's enough demand.
Apps are a waste for CoH/CoV/GR. If you must make an app, why not for something useful? Like badge tracking, Giant Monster slayings, what server your friends are on etc. But like I said, it's a waste.

I would rather see something like that to be honest. But that sounds like the City Vault website(or whatever it was to be called) that got put on hold or canceled.
