A question - I'm ignorant!

I'm lazy, ignorant, and many other less than savory labels. Tonight, I took my little fire blaster (level 44) into an AE mission and there were two allys, and one EB and one regular boss.

The EB and the boss were fun, nothing like I'm used to facing in game - except for PvP, maybe.

My question, based on my ignorance, as I've yet to create a mission. The ally - one of them was wonderful - some crazy mix of empath and scrapper. The other was a slow, scared and apparently near-sighted plant controller. It could have been my unfamiliarity with the plant controller primary, but why does one ally hang so far back - and the other be...aggressive? I'm just curious. (I expect to start work on my own arc once I get my main caught up after my lengthy absence.)

Are these differences by design ? Or rather, could they be?

Architects can select a few different AIs for Allies. One is aggressive and will attack any enemy on sight. One is defensive and will attack an enemy only after the enemy deals damage to you or to the Ally itself. One is passive and will never attack.
