It's more like someone getting a cheap-*** MP3 player for free that only works half the time, has crappy sound quality, and having basic functionality, when they could have gotten a good MP3 player with good sound quality, extra options and functions. When asked why, they say "because I don't have to reach into my pocket to change the songs".

Sure, there are going to be people whose pants will fall down if they try reaching into their pocket, but they should just wear a belt.

I don't know about you, but WMP is a lot better than most of those crappy players out there.

I prefer VLC to WMP but it is interesting to note that the keyboard buttons only work in an actual WMP window...I can't make them effect the WMP previewer that runs if I click on a sound file attached to an email (my voicemail).

It's hard enough just to keep that piece of adware out of my startup, I don't want more plugins for it. If we did have a plugin, I'd want it to be for WinAMP, which others have already explained they don't use.
Media Keys work with any media program that recognizes them. The top three media players are WMP, iTunes, and Winamp. All three have APIs (Application Programming Interfaces, aka hooks for other programs to use to connect/control them).

I agree with you about Real Player.

Completely false. The media keys work with Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center, iTunes, VLC*, AND Winamp**. It might work with Realplayer, however I haven't tested it. They work for all these programs. The reason why is that the media keys are trapped at a OS level and any program designed to recognize the OS response will act appropriately.

* In VLC you have to bind the keys via the preferences.
** In Winamp, you might have to enable them in preferences.

You can change those settings in the Control Panel.

So, use Winamp. Here is the thing: I named the top three music players out there. Each one has interfaces available. The media keys work for all players on a Windows OS. The developers using an iTunes API would extend the capability to all MacOS clients. If you want to bring up Linux, well we all know that isn't officially supported.

I just run Pandora via Firefox while playing. Never had a problem. Though it's hard to hear blinkies in the game while blasting Nine Inch Nails!!!

The multimedia keys never worked for me, and I set up my file priorities correctly. I wasn't aware there were control panel options to set what the multimedia keys do, largely because I've never seen a control panel option that suggested it might do this and keyboards no longer come with drivers. I'll have a look.

If it requires additional software plugins, though, I'm not sure I want to bother.

As far as Windows Media Player goes, I refuse to use it. It just takes ages to start up. I'd much sooner use Media Player Classic. As far as WinAMP having lots of bloated crap, you don't have to install any of those. There's a WinAMP light variant that has just the base skin with only the base plugins and if you refuse to install any of that crap, you get a perfectly light player. It was actually embedded in the last set of video codecs I downloaded.

If you're actually suggesting that you can get one in-game plugin to control all kinds of players that I might own, I'd give it a shot. But I just know that such a thing just wouldn't work with the stuff I use. It always happens like that.

What I was suggesting wasn't a plugin for the media players so much as the game accessing the normal interfaces of the media players (that the developers provide). Much like nVidia or ATI.
