My squishy solo DM/SD

Hello all,

I noticed a lot of posts about awesome softcaped IO'd DM/SD scrappers. But I'm just starting well actually re-re-restarting (fourth time's a charm) and was wondering if anyone could help me with a leveling build. I can't seem to slot properly with just SOs and generic IOs. I solo a lot becuase I'm in Iraq and connection doesn't make grouping too playable, and I have made more trips to the hospital then i care to mention. The highest level I've reached was 27, but I scrapped him last night.

I'm remaking my toon becuase I finally have a concept that I think will keep me motivated and would love an edge with this tight build.

Also I have ninja run so travel power is not required.

I'm not rich in fact with about 20m across all my toons I guess I'm considered down right poor, but at what point (or level) should i start adding IO sets?

Thanks a ton

Basically, focus on pool powers that give you defense. For instance, take Combat Jumping, Weave and Maneuvers. Make sure you slot your secondary powers for defense. Pick up a Steadfast Protection unique. Take Tough too. Stamina and Conserve Power should be able to power it all. If you can swing it, a Gaussian set would be good. If you're taking Maneuvers, then you can take Tactics, and slot it in there. Frankenslot your attacks in the mid 30s. Use Siphon Life routinely. Don't try to hold off on it as a heal. Just spam it. Better to have full hit points when you start getting nailed, even if it means you "waste" some of the heal.

And in case you have the same problem I had, even though two recharges is technically enough in Active Defense, in practice, I often didn't click it in time. I think it was responsible for half of my ten or so deaths going 1-50 on Fire/Shield. Adding one more recharge made that problem go away, even if it technically shouldn't have been necessary.

Oh, and purple shield inspirations are your god mode. Basically, try to get your defense into the mid 30s, and probably call it good. Pop a purple inspiration, and you're soft-capped, making you pretty much unkillable while it lasts. Keep a handful on hand, and once your base defense is solid, you shouldn't have any more problems surviving.

I'd hold off until the 30s for IOs in general, though I'd grab the Steadfast protection as soon as I could afford it, and probably a Kismet unique as well, though with less urgency.

Awesome info. Thanks. A few questions (excuse my ignorance.)

What does frankenslot mean?
Should I put Endrdx in my attacks?

Thanks again.

Frankenslot means to use diferent IO sets with in a single power, which in turn will give you various bonuses with the different sets being used. With the use of IO sets you can have one receipe which can offer Endrdx as well as Rech, Acc, Dam and so on this is what is so good about IO's.

There some very good threads on DM/SD builds on the forums at present, with alot of information, and builds people are trying, well worth the read.

Most of the builds you'll find posted are final level 50 builds. Here was my leveling build. I planned it out for slots up to level 40 and IOs starting at level 30, generally frankenslotting to gain maximum enhancement value.

I did get some set bonuses, and I did use the Healing/Recovery uniques as well as a Steadfast +Def and Kismet +Acc. This was a very solid leveling build and I did pop purples often for bosses and large group situations. Even if you can't use all of it, it should give you a general idea. Hope you're leveling is going well.

@Gaidin: This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks a ton. I made my toon last night and got him to 15 before I was this reply. I must say I was very happy to see that I'm very close to your leveling build (with the exception of not taking hasten.) Even the sloting levels are the same. The fact that I'm not the only one with Smite/Shadow Maul/Sand of Mu is comforting, lol.

I do have a question about AAO. Since I'm not taking SS could AAO be taken at 16 or is there some other reason you help it until 28.

Thanks again

Yeah, as already said, Frankenslotting refers to mixing IO sets in your powers. Generally, you're ignoring set bonuses. You're just after the best enhancement values you can get, which means you're trying to slot a lot of triples (enhance 3 separate things) and doubles, quads if you're being spendy. Me, I usually have a very specific goal when I'm Frankenslotting, specific amounts of recharge, how much endurance reduction I'll need, that kind of thing. But you can just try to get as much as you can of everything, of course.

Frankenslotting takes care of endurance, but I don't tend to do that until the 30s, so until then, yes, you'll probably want some endurance reduction. At a low level, I tend to slot primarily accuracy and endurance reduction. By the time I'm in SOs, I usually just have one endurance reducer. Maybe two. Basically, whatever it takes to keep me moving, and not spending all my time on one knee. Most of your endurance use comes from your attacks, so they're the primary target for endurance reduction. But I generally go with one endurance reducer in every toggle except for Combat Jumping.

Oh, and if you didn't already know, take Hurdle to go with your Ninja Run, and jump everywhere. It'll be a lot faster than running. And you might want to do this:

/bind e "powexecname Ninja Run$$powexecname Combat Jumping"

Not to answer for Gaidin, but you CAN take AAO earlier. It's mostly a matter of how much aggro you're willing to pull. If you're solo, it doesn't really matter, since you'll get all the aggro anyway, so you might as well be doing more damage. But if you team a lot, taking AAO before you can handle the aggro can get you killed.

Is this a particularly expesive build? If so is there a slightly cheaper one that could get near results?

This is exactly it. I was teaming with my wife and two friends, and I had leveled an ElM/Shield previously with AAO earlier and it got me killed quite a bit. I decided to wait until I had Tough before picking AAO up and it did help immensely. If you're not planning on teaming, then you can get AAO earlier and it won't impact your survivability.

As far as the build, that's the exact one I used, and I don't have a cheaper alternative built. You could just eliminate the uniques in the build and the cost would be much lower. Generally, you can look at the cheaper IO sets and grab a combination to reach the best enhancement values that you can afford. I started bidding on recipes when I started the toon, and by the time I hit 27 I had most of them. The uniques I had already from previous toons, so they didn't really cost me any of my leveling funds.
