Bug Hunter

So, assuming you find a bug, who should you tell in order to have the best chance to get said badge?

Me. I'll be absolutely confidential.

Leandro has a few suggestions on this, I'll let him take the floor. Just remember, BH-grade bugs need to be game-changing issues, like bigtime XP exploits in AE, etc. "Hey, this wall is weird looking" won't cut it.

But.. But.. it lets you get under the map. That's not intentional! haha

Ask for the badge and consistently using exploit are sure fire ways to remove your chances of getting the badge. Confirm the exploit exists, then bug it ingame and send PMs to the relevant devs with the proper information on how to activate the exploit. Then keep quiet about the exploit and you have a good chance of getting the badge.

The first step in being sane is to admit that you are insane.

During this last beta I PM'd AE-specific bugs to Dr. Aeon with CC to Arbiter Kim, and other bugs to Arbiter Kim directly. I might have CC'd another dev when it was their area, but I make sure Arbiter Kim gets a copy because he's the official bug compiler around these parts.

Definitely do not ever ask for the badge at all and certainly do not mention any details about the bug/exploit publicly at all. Sadly the fact that you even asked about how to get this badge here may have already disqualified you.

The Devs basically award this badge on their whims and their whims alone. We players could give you all the advice in the world we think might help you, but basically you have to be in the right place at the right time for the Devs to subjectively decide if your case is worthy or not. Good luck I guess.

Sadly many people have reasonably concluded the Bug Hunter badge is as much a popularity award badge from the Devs as it has anything to do with real bugs/exploits. *sigh*

They can DQ me all they want. As long as this badge is handed out approximatly whenever the hell Positron feels like giving it out, and not even then, I could care less about their silly rules.

As far as I'm concerned, this badge does not exist. Badges should NEVER be handed out on a whim.

Actually, about a year ago they said that they changed the "don't ask for it" policy. It can no longer hurt your chances to get it, but it won't really help anything either, except maybe to let them know that it's something you're actually intersted in.

Other than that, I still have to agree with Kheldarn... any in-game rewards given out on a human being's whim to some people and not others are kind of unfair.

Positron has nothing to do with it. It's awarded by the QA department. So if they're too busy actually fixing bugs, awarding Bug Hunters is a low priority.

Positron offered me my first Bug Hunter, but because QA was swamped with bugs and problems in the mess that post-i14 was, several months passed until someone got around to awarding it to my character (it was Ghost Falcon, I believe, who did). TheOcho contacted me about my 2nd Bug Hunter (which was a great surprise, I didn't know a player could get it twice) the 20th of April, and my character had it the 23rd; the QA team probably wasn't neck-deep in bugs and thus had time to award it quickly.

The devs have stated plainly, publicly and officially that asking for the badge has no effect on your odds of getting it. Furthermore, it was stated that this was a myth - it was NEVER official position.

Actually, they said that was a mistaken impression. It was never the policy and the belief was based on a misunderstanding.

Yeah, I know someone who has it both redside and blueside.

I've always been of the opinion that the entire badge is a myth.

14 issues I've been playing and I've yet to see a single person with it...

It's just a carrot dangled by the devs to get us to be vigilant when exploits are found.

Unless someone has pics.

I could have sworn I read a post by Positron on the old forums where Bug Hunter was being discuessed, and he mentioned that there had been a few times he was going to award someone Bug Hunter, until he got further in the missive, and saw they asked for it, and that made him change his mind...

I think that's where the misunderstanding came from. It wasn't just because they asked for it, but because it was apparently the reason that person sent in the report to begin with.

The fact that this badge is given out purely on the subjective whim of the Devs involved pretty much invalidates anything "official" in regards to the so-called rules of this badge, stated or otherwise.

I suppose we are free to choose to believe anything we want about what will improve or worsen our chances to get this badge. As long as there is fundamentally no objective requirement basis for it being awarded there's no real point in believing anything the Devs say on the matter one way or the other "official" or not.

Superstitions and voodoo hocus-pocus are as good as anything when it comes to how we should react to this joke of a badge as far as I'm concerned. The fact that I have always publicly criticized this badge is quite likely much of the reason I don't (and probably will never) have one. This is a consequence of free speech I'm quite prepared to live with.

I can vouch for this. I once complimented JLove's hat, and he awarded me Bug Hunter. True story*.

I believe it was BAB who reported "I heard Positron say....", so it was second-hand and hearsay.
It was subsequently posted that it had been a misinterpretation.

I cannot count the number of /bug 's I have done in the past 5 months. On test and live. I see bugs all the time, and some have been there since launch of CoV. Seer Marino, 'nuff said...
