When I see people bring up how old and "outdated" City of Heroes is, I can't help but think, "It's not old. It is mature. It has had six years of continuous development." I mean, is Microsoft Word 2010 "old" because it has been around for a couple of decades? If I wrote a word processor from scratch, does its "newness" automatically make it better?

I'm not saying that no other game will ever come along and clean City of Heroes's clock. But if it did, it would have to be one HELL of a game from day one, and even then, it would take them years to get to the level of maturity that City of Heroes enjoys today. And I highly doubt Paragon Studios would just be sitting around on their duffs in the meantime. Even if they had a hugely successful launch, they'd still have to work a lot faster, a lot harder, and a lot longer than Paragon Studios just to catch up.

Anyone who wants to write a competing game who sees this video had better first think, "Holy s***, we've got a lot of work to do."
Which is why I was all the more pleased to get THIS message via YouTube from my video:

Quote:
"Samuraiko,

Your video awesomely rocks I've been playing World Of Warcraft for over 5 years and still playing I've not once looked at another MMORPG. But after discovering your video from random youtube surfing its got me convinced, to give City of heroes a try. Video game publishers can learn alot from your video on how to promote there games. Thanks again."
And I love how many of the game vets are posting saying, "Wow, I've been here since Issue (fill in the blank), it seems like yesterday!"

This neatly sums up a key part of my own reaction to the video, as well; it really underscores just how far along the game has come, over time. The content of the video also provides evidence of how much thought went into making and refining the game and how well the development team has done at taking on board information--even though not all of it has been delivered in the most coherent or courteous way possible--and putting that information to good use.

I also got emotional on watching the video. It was extremely well done.

Hopefully the offline issues get better.

Nice work as always, Samuraiko... this vid really put the trip in perspective.

Add me to the list of people who've achieved emotional excitement upon watching your video. That feeling of nostalgia(Or however the heck you spell that... This computer doesn't have Microsoft Word) and rekindled joy mixed so very well while I watched from the darkness of my room.

As a veteren that came in only a few days previous to the City of Villains Release - less then a week, I believe - seeing all that I've missed and all that I've been through helped to give me that strong feeling of reassurance that I've chosen the perfect community to belong to. It feels right to be here and interract with the names that I've seen since the beginning. Not only that, but to be here and take part in ushering in and welcoming the future community that has slowly continued to pour in to take part in this group effort.

Right now, not only do I want to thank you for this video, but the community and the developers in general who have all had a part in shaping what has become, not just a game, but a family. And thanks for letting me become a part of it.

...

I just really wanted to get that off my chest.

Simply awesome video, Michelle... as usual. I still think you should be on the Paragon Studios' pay-role.

Love the video, Samuraiko! Been seeing you mention this for a little while now, and been really looking forward to it, it was awesome.

Watching it I kept thinking "Man, I remember that." When the arenas were construction zones, and then first came out and they were THE place to be. Croatoa's launch and immediately becoming my favorite zone (still is!). Heck, it feels like RWZ hasn't been around for THAT long.

Thanks for the memories, and here's to six more years!

Yay! Made it into another one of D_R's vids.

The only downside? Now I'm getting calls from this guy named Saul Rubenstein.
This is not a Good Thing I take it?

Tell me you did NOT just compare CoH to MS Word!
CHA-CLICK^INFINITY
What was that? That was the sound of a hammerspace arsenal being cocked and aimed in your direction...

*sighs* I've pretty much given up on that ever happening, but if they change their minds, they know where to find me.

I owed you guys after the demofile of us doing the second half of the new Posi TF got borked. And since I still had that great footage of you and your simulacrum slugging it out, I decided to include it.

I didn't get emotional while watching the video, but it did make me realize how much this game has changed. It's easy to take content / features we've had a while for granted - this just reminded me of some of them.

I did get a good chuckle at 1:22. The three neglected Paladin chilling in the same spot. Hahah.

(The music was awesome, as well.)

Out of curiosity, who on the forums also posts over at forums.somethingawful.com? I'm not exactly getting badmouthed over there, but if I'm being referred to as 'overhyped' for producing 'fanwank machima" (it's "machinima," guys), with a rather rabid 'fan club', I'd like a chance to defend myself without having to pay $10 to do so.

I know my work won't appeal to everyone, I'd just like to know what they don't like about it so maybe I can try and improve. I'm not perfect, and I've learned a lot from folks who've disagreed about the quality of my vids (best example - my new opening credits after EmperorSteele rightfully pointed out the original ones were too long).

I'll be honest and say ignore the SomethingAwful forums. A wretched hive of scum and villainy pretty much sums them up.

If it's not EVE or WoW they'll hate it.

Any somethingawful forum member is free to prove me wrong but they do kind of try to live up to the stereotype of basically being made up of internet trolls and griefers from what I've seen of them in action.

What really got me about this one was the realization of how long I've actually been around.

Watching that made me remember that I joined in the last 2 weeks of Issue 3!
Can't believe it's been that long and how much the game has changed.

Great job on the use of the Omega team letters too! Loved that addition, and the epic feeling of the ending. Bravissimo!!

Simply gorgeous

For those of you who want to shorten the URL for social networking etc

this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BCt9QW0HfE turns into this: http://bit.ly/aC0ZUZ which is much nicer for twitter etc

Samuaiko - I sincerely hope Paragon never employs you. Not because you are not worthy, but for quite the opposite - because your brilliant creativity would be hampered and diminished by a reign of black pebbles. Keep doing what you do for its own sake.

I just got my 18 month anniversary badge and I don't mind telling you that watching your videos was one the reasons I ended up getting into this game.

Thank you for this and so many other wonderful videos.

Think positive! Imagine what could happen with me as the standard bearer for the Black Pebble Army! Besides, apart from the love of the art, having an actual JOB would be nice.
