OS Advice - Win7 Home or Pro?

OK, looks like I'm building a new system as my laptop has crapped out on me yet again. Even if I get it fixed it obviously can't deal with the stress of running high-end applications in the long-term.

One of the reasons I've been angling towards building a tower - I produce a radio show, and awhile back I bought a high-end professional digital audio system (E-MU 1616M). I want to be able to install this and do most of my audio production and mixing from home. The catch is that systems like these usually aren't on the cutting edge as far as OS support - the latest documentation says it doesn't fully support 64-bit Vista and is too out of date to bother with Win7

So, in reading the description for Win7 Pro on Newegg I see...

Quote:
Windows XP Mode requires an additional 1 GB of RAM, an additional 15 GB of available hard disk space, and a processor capable of hardware virtualization with Intel VT or AMD-V turned on
Is that an Pro-only feature, and would it prove useful in getting this stuff to work properly?

TIA!

Basically you need a system that can do virtualization. So it has to be fairly new and ideally have plenty of horsepower. The only versions that support XP mode are Pro, Ultimate and Enterprise. There may be ways to hack it into other Win 7 versions but those won't be supported obviously. In a nutshell it lets you run XP inside Win 7 in it's own VM. The XP gets virtualized access to your hardware, which presents a few limitations but otherwise runs fine. How well it will do with what you want to do I have no idea though.

It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.

Back_Blast, they lifted the virtualization hardware requirement just recently.

Tyrrano, it's not available in home or starter editions. Also it doesn't support 3D graphics libraries so it's not good for 3D legacy gaming. It's really meant for so small business that is still reliant on software written 15 years ago, by someone who doesn't work there anymore, and it won't run in Windows 7.

Huh, nice. Though how well it will run on old systems I have to wonder. But a good step forward for folks w/o virtualization HW.

By that you mean the XP mode doesn't support the 3D libraries, right? If I go this route I'd only use the XP mode to support the digital audio suite. So then the question becomes, is there any CoX-related reason *not* to use Win7 Pro?

I'm running Win 7 Pro x64 with CoH and nary a problem.

Don't know how well XP Mode would work with that digital audio suite Vs native Windows 7, I would suggest you ask over at forums that specialize on using those products as well as the hardware's own support site for a more definitive answer.

As for this game, no reason. Some people are playing the game on Win 7 Ultimate.

The Win 7 versions below Pro do have an XP mode but that is emulated, Pro and above run an actual XP image in a virtual PC so anything that runs in XP should run, however as this is a virtual machine you won't get direct access to the host PC's hardware. Whether this will be a problem will depend in how the driver is written. If it accesses the hardware via OS library calls (even unsupported ones) it should work - if it directly accesses the hardware you may have problems.

The best thing to do in this case is check with your sound systems support team as to whether it will work correctly in XP mode on Win7 Pro.
