It cannot be done? I don't believe it anymore.
With the new hero and villains arc (especially the villain arc), my own optimism has significantly gone up.
A flame called CO got lit under this game's butt. Competition is good. Next thing to get lit is a blowtorch, though (you know what I'm talking about). Asbestos underwear will come in handy.
My predicted outcome? CoX gets voted "Best non-sword & sorcery MMO" yet agin.

Super Reflexes: the Golden Fox of power sets!

WARNING: I bold names.

A lot of the "Impossible" Comments came from Pre-NorCal and Paragon Studios Era when Cryptic still ran the game, it was the fact they didn't want to make the resources availible to the game at that time or possibly never. A few of their newer releases are running through the same issue, "It's Impossible to do that!" is a catch phrase of theirs.
But Paragon Studios uses the phrases "Not at this time" Or "It can't be done at this time" because of the fact they have other more pressing matters to fix first (Going Rogue and the next 4-5 issues they already have mapped out, if they map out that far) So it's a good way of shifting around the Phrase "Impossible". The minute a Dev says that now, yes I might second guess them, depending on how stupid the Idea is.
Like everyone else is saying it's all a matter of Time, Money, People, and Technology.

A couple of things:
First, what Bill said. There's "won't," there's "can't" and there's "not now." Secondly, as one of the developers mentioned before, everything is a question of priorities. You can have something done well, fast or cheap, and you generally only ever get to pick any two of the three. A lot of "not now" is because of this. Other than that, staying optimistic is a good general policy. I still hold SOME hope for an extra AT or two at some point down the road. |
Although I will say that it sounds like some of the devs think that if something needs work, it has to be an elaborate production. This is something I disagree with in some cases.
Like when War Witch talked about improving the starting experience for standard heroes and villains. We'd all like to see some new stuff done here since not every character concept can be a Preatorian. But her take on it is that it would be something requiring a zone rewrite on the order of Faultline. She mentions all these new art assets etc. that would be needed to do this and says they don't have the resources.
I don't think it needs to be as grand a sweeping change as that. I don't think starting in Paragon or starting in the Rogue Isles needs to eclipse or be equal to a Preatoria starting experience...it just needs some updating and a few new contacts and arcs. I wouldn't go about trying to change Mercy Isle at all in the short term...just add more starting contacts. And while Galaxy City and Atlas could use some sprucing up, I don't think a zone-wide overhaul needs to be in place first before you try to make the starting experience for new heroes less crappy.
Actually, CO didn't "light a flame under the game's butt". It was NCSoft actually willing to invest the money necessary to hire more then the 15 people under Cryptics rule that opened up a bunch of new possibilities. Stuff like Power Customization (Which some people want to erroneously attribute to the coming of CO) was in development for over a YEAR, and only because they were FINALLY able to get the staff and finances to do it, which was the primary reason they stated it was a low priority in the beginning.

...now we are seeing things that were then impossible now made possible, so I do not believe it anymore developers. I do not believe a power or a skill set cannot be done or we will "never" see it in game because all the new stuff you said was impossible we now have.

Costume jetpacks may not be impossible, but if they're not in the game it's functionally the same. Bottom line, they ain't there.
