I always wondered why they were needed, what with you DRAWING A BIG HONKING SHIELD! everytime you activated a power, it just seems as odd as every weapon set being drawn with a flash of light.
It makes even less sense considering the fact that you can use shields that have visual effects.

Well, we kinda can turn those off now for other sets,(Technology not withstanding) and my point is it just makes very little sense, considering the shield itself is the indicator, and might have been done just as easily with a different animation/poses, but here we are now, and it's still pretty good.

Is it possible for us to have a Minimal FX version of Shield Defense? I'd love to be able to have that, but given that the power set involves drawing an object similar to weapon power sets, I'm not sure it can be done... can it?
