New Graphics Card Not Fitting

With i17 around the corner, I went out and bought a bran new card, the GTX 260.

But before that, I got a new 650w PS, cool!

The bad news is that when I went and installed the new card, it doesn't fit.

As such, the new is card is so damn long, it covers up the 4 SATA ports at the end of the PCI-E slot.

The current card I have is the 8600GT, which a nice little square card and fits nicely.

I don't want to waste this new PS, so heres my question:

Is there any graphic cards out there are SQUARE and not long that will run Ultra mode??

Are there some new, I hate to say this since I love Nvidia, ATI cards are a box shape?

Bummer to, the GTX 260 was a good deal too, around 150 bucks.

Thanks as always to the fellow tech geeks!

Does the board have only the single PCI-E x16 slot?
Alternately, would the SATA ports be usable with right-angled connectors?
(Alternately alternate, which board and which video card - brand/model - do you have?_)

This one?

Ummm... I don't know what to tell ya, Hawk. How many of the SATA ports are you using? Maybe M_B's idea of right-angle SATA connectors is the right answer.

Be well, people of CoH.

Thats the crappy one I got!

Of the 4 that are on there, I'm using 3! (DVD, and 2 HD's (1 windows, 1 storage)

If I put the card in, it literally smashes the ports, nothing can fit under there.

I don't know about the right/left hook thingy.

So I take it the higher end cards are all long and damn big?

I had a motherboard that size and I was forced to get a full size MB because I could not move anything around to make the card fit. BTW, I have that card and runs City of Heroes great.

Could you run your drives on IDE?

Generally it's an either/or situation. I haven't personally come across any internal hard drives or dvd drives that had both IDE and SATA on them.

The other possibility, and it depends on how many SATA devices you have, is to give a 90 degree SATA cable a try, it may be able to squeeze under the card and it's cooler.

Looks like Acer's using this MSI board -

Ouch. Tight fit.

Yeah, the right angle cables would possibly help for two drives. Can't see three.

The alternative is an add in SATA controller card for ... well, I suspect it'd have to be one of the PCI slots, though for that smaller PCIe slot there are some - such as here.

Of course, yeah, if you want to get a bit more radical, full board upgrade. Which means you may want a RAM upgrade (that board, that I'm reading at least, does single channel memory only, and two slots = limited,) nto sure what's out for socket 775 ATM.

But, yeah, for a full size card, that layout's just... ow. The board looks to be designed for light use, or a HTPC or some such instead, where you're not going to have a beefy video card on it.

(Edit - for one of your other questions:

Expect them to be similar. I've got a 5770, two slots, rectangular, shrouded - I wouldn't try to put it on that board. However, some versions are out without a shround, IIRC... such as this one. I don't know of a 260 or (edit - nvidia based) equivalent that's unshrouded.

From this picture it appears that the SATA sockets are not directly in-line with the ceter line of the PCI slot. That is, it's the cooler on the GTX 260 that is causing interferrence, not the pcb board itself.

If that be the case, my suggestion is: trade up! If you can return the GTX 260 and pay an additional $10 + shipping, then get this ATI 5770. It's a faster, more current card than the GTX 260 and should have enough clearance for SATA cables. The card itself is only 8.5 inches long, and the beveling gives even more room.

Or, he could just cut off the last inch or two of the nVidia card and go with that.

Oh wait, that won't work will it.

Sorry, might want to try Human_Being's suggestion of the 5770.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

I thank everyone for the suggestions.

After looking over things, I've come up with two things:

A new case. The current case doesn't fit things nicely and is a little snug.

As for the whole SATA problem: The SATA Card Bill came up.

After putting the card somewhat into place, the bottom PCI slot has room.

The 5770 card would be nice, but I can't handle the ATI driver issue.

Again, thanks to everyone for their thoughts/ideas/suggestions!

ATI driver issue? Which issue? If you're referring to the graphical errors ATi cards currently experience in CoX, those will disappear with issue 17's release sometime this month; that has been confirmed multiple times by the Devs.

Jeez people love to hate on the ATI. I appreciate that, historically, they've published some poor drivers but...nVidia really isn't in a good position these days.

*shrug*

For my reference, what is that? A micro-ATX?

Whats the length on that 5770 card?

If its longer then 10 inches, no go.

I just don't want to deal with drivers for which card on ATI.

Nvidia, just go, select the card, boom done.

As above, it's 8.5 inches long. The micro-ATX board itself should be 9.6 inches on a side.

Err...still confused. You can "select the card" and be done in the upper right of this page. It will direct you to something like this, depending on OS.

One thing I will say is they're *not* impressing me ATM. Yeah, historical COH issues aside (compatible cursors, enhancement jumps, etc.) the grey stripes of death are hitting me in other games often enough to be *really* irritating.

Yes, using current drivers, yes, uninstalled the old ones, etc.

I'm rather at the point of hunting *someplace* down that has a Geforce 260.

Tiger Direct is where I got mine, about $170, on sale....

As for those ATI drivers, what the heck? You need to download 3 different things for 1 driver? Please correct me if I'm wrong.
