Converting from XP to Win7

So I'm going to be upgrading my computer next week. I figured since I will have to reinstall my OS, I may as well move over to Windows 7. I had originally figured to just copy my CoH directory to one of my spare HDs, then do a new install/copy the files back to avoid downloading the files over again. Plus it would save my various settings.

Reason for the post was I was curious if the game versions were different enough between XP and Windows 7 that this might not work. Anyone know if this might be a problem?

Thanks,

Vysires

I don't think the game's different on Win7; I did a complete fresh install on mine though since my COH directory had gotten rather cluttered... I'd used the same directory and drive for two upgrades and reinstalled each time, then copied. I found I had 3 different COH installs (one was Test, but I've no idea where the other came from) and had to make sure which was which.

When I went to Win7 I just copied cohupdater.exe to a new directory on the new SSD and let it cook overnight. Everything was all ready to run the next morning... it only took me 5 minutes to reset resolution and various graphics options, and to re-install the Vidiotmaps overlay. Doing it that way I made sure I wasn't bringing any potential problems to my new install.

Oh, one "gotcha" that I've seen with Win7; make sure you install the newest drivers for your videocard from Nvidia or ATI... the driver Windows installs isn't fully functional. I'd also suggest installing the 64bit version of Win7; since you're going to all the work you may as well get rid of the 4GB RAM limit.

COH has just been murdered by NCSoft. http://www.change.org/petitions/ncso...city-of-heroes

When I got my new compter, what I did was connect my old one via my network, and after I installed CoH from my Architect DVD, I copied the CoH folder over it.

Copying the folder to a different HDD will also work. Note that when you install Windows 7, if you don't disable the UAC, the shortcut for CoH will have this stupid blue & yellow shield on it, and every time you run it, it will ask if you want to allow it to connect. Very annoying.

Yeah, as mentioned - there's no different version of COH for win7. What you're planning should work just fine. You may want to check the guides section, though, for a guide from Bill Z Bubba about moving/reinstalling COH.... this one.

I tend to back up my COH directory anyway with new issues, etc. and went through a similar process - first with upgrading my old machine to win7, then building the new one. It's painless.

(Oh... yeah, agree 100% with both grabbing the 64 bit version, and with making sure you have the current drivers for everything, but especially the video card, ready before you do the upgrade.)
