A name may be used by only one character at a time, per server.

Someone else, however, can snag DAN on Virtue. Another person can get DAN on Infinity, etc.
Now, if you decide "Hey, I want to move from Guardian to Infinity," the other DAN was there first. You'll be DAN1 (I believe,) as well as be given a free rename token.
While you're gone, someone else can come onto Guardian and make DAN - so if you decide "the heck with that, I'm moving back," well... you're out of luck if someone else took the name on your original server while you were gone.

A lot of people who have a particular character they're known for (Claws and Effect in my case) snag the name on as many servers as they can in an attempt to be the ONLY one with that name. I didn't think to do that, so there are Claws and Effects running around that aren't me. It annoys me slightly, but there's nothing I can do about it, so I don't worry about it.

Agreeing with Memphis_Bill, ClawsandEffect and Local_Man, I was in Wentworth's the other day and someone asked me if I was Cheat Code (or some variant) on another server.
I replied that no, I was Cheat Code on Freedom alone, and he told me a Tanker on another server was named the same thing. After a few minutes of conversation, I responded that I didn't know, or really care, which one of us had used the name first, that in this version of the Cox world, Freedom, I was the one and only Cheat Code and anything else was a mere Elseworlds edition.
