Acessing Market = Disconnect

Hi all,

Does anyone else get disconnected when they access the market? It's not 100% but it does happen enough to be a burden. Does anyone have a work around that might help?

Thanks in advance.

Happens to me, too.

The game hangs significantly while the CH database server is contacted and searched for every single item in game in alphabetical order. Not much of a workaround, but I usually try and find a low-population, low-graphics intensity neighborhood soon after login. Back when /unloadgfx used to work, it seemed to help if I cleared the 'cache' before accessing it (if I'd been playing a while). I have 2.5 GB of RAM, and it still happens. Just not good enough of a compy, I suppose.

I suspect it's more of a bandwidth issue than one of computer performance - the link is so busy shoveling market crap that it fails to maintain contact with the game server, such that the client connection times out - but that's only an anecdotal suspicion. My system isn't particularly high-performance, but I've got a big pipe (as the bishop said to the actress), and this doesn't happen to me.

For me, it stopped happening when I upgraded from 1 to 2 GB of RAM.

But yeah, generally the things that helped me where the same - right after login, preferably low-traffic Wentworths - usually KR - or any non-Cap BM villain side.

It may also depend on bandwidth, but it definitely depends on computer performance.

  • An older machine with the same amount of RAM on the same network is significantly slower accessing the market.
  • The same machine running other high-CPU activities in the background is significantly slower accessing the market.
  • The same machine using enough memory to force the game to swap is significantly slower accessing the market.
  • The same machine running a 2nd instance of the game, the 2nd instance is much slower accessing the market. Notably on my system the 2nd instance started does not get the same hardware acceleration from my video drivers and has lower framerate when in the foreground.
By "significantly" I mean by as much as 20x slower in my limited testing. Obviously I expect the actual value to be heavily dependant on what you're actually doing in the background or how much swapping is involved.

Edit: my network pipe is fairly ridiculous, and I still see the above. To the extent that when I16 was in beta, people were reporting huge lag in TF mode which I never saw. This turned out to be due to massive spray of network info when in TF mode choking out some people's connections, and I never even noticed it.

Also, a lot of people have been talking about a memory leak in the game and that does seem to be the case. If I try to access Wentworths after several hours of play, it will sometimes crash the client. It didn't used to do this.

I didn't want to bring that up since I had nothing to back it up, but yes I've heard of that and yes, my symptoms have been matching those reported.

Let my join with UberGuy and say that bandwidth has nothing to do with the accessing the market problem. There is no spike in data being received from the server. It does go up one to two kilobytes per second but that's it.

The problem is it's a very big list and it uses a whole lot of memory and I'm guessing that filtering and sorting the list into alphabetical order when it first loads is memory intensive and time consuming.

But why? Because when observing the data flow (using NetMeter 1.1.3) to and from the server, when the market loads the client stops talking to the server, likely because the filter/sort is a standard library call rather than something they coded themselves that will keep the client talking while the filter/sort is running. If the server doesn't hear from the client after a minute the server stops talking to the client and after another minute of not hearing from the client you are mapserved.

Low memory conditions just exacerbate the problem since swapping to disk is a 100 times slower than main memory. The OS is struggling to keep the memory that the market is working on loaded as well as the memory the graphics engine needs to render the environment.

Yes, this. I crash out when accessing the market after playing for at least 45-60 minutes. Also, accessing SG window, training, and switching toons. If I do those things when I just log in, it's no issue. I have to play for a while first. I'll also crash just doing normal stuff after playing for over two hours.

For the record, I have 3 GB RAM.

I figured it add something to do with my computer. Is there a way to have the Market load less info at first and then I can gradually remove filters or something?

I hope that makes sense.

To add to this, perhaps as possible evidence - if I shut down my computer after a few minutes of play, it takes about a minute - 2 minutes to shut down. After several hours of CoH, it can take up to 5 minutes or more to shut down.

It does. That's why I've been asking for that for a long time.

It makes perfect sense. Unfortunately, the answer is "No".

I've never had my machine crash when accessing the market, but I do sometimes get a long delay before anything shows up in the market interface. What I do is to switch the option from "show buying & selling" to "show all". That seems to clear it up instantly. I'm guessing that downloading the data from the server was not the bottleneck, it's filtering the list to see if there are bids/items.

I used to dread visiting Wentworths because it was pretty much a guaranteed disconnect. Interestingly enough, the problem went away after I scrubbed my drive and re-installed my OS. Getting rid of all the other junk that was loading into memory made a big difference in the general performance of the game and reduced the number of game crashes for a time.

Then i16 came out and my PC began randomly rebooting in the middle of missions or just standing idly talking in AP. Even a new dual-core pc with more memory hasn't fixed that one.
