Kat/regen needs Werner's help

Word on the street is Werner know all and sees all in regards to all things kat/regen

I have 50 kat regen who is fun to play in pve and I want to take him in to some pvp now

I know the ma and fire are the best but i am not about being fotm and it takes me 3 or4 months to get a toon to 50, plus I love my back story and concept so I am sticking with it

I need some help with power choices and pool choices

I also have to keep the cost under a billion as I do not farm for my IMF I just play the game and badge hunt

issue #1 DA or not DA
pro DA high def to melée lethal
great for fighting melée toe to toe

con def is not loved by the dev as of late
and I am regen so surviving is not huge issue and I should pick a more offense based power

slotting my attacks I am going for more recharge bonus and achellies heel proc 1 or 2 and a gladiator neg res proc if I can afford it

power pools
cj/sj ? Acro?
hasten ?need for ss
fitness for even more regen and end mod to survive the draining attackers
then the big question
stealth invisible phase or assualt tactics?

For epic weapon for web made and accuracy/perception to hit booster

in have made 8 different builds on mids covering all the options
and I know pvp is a big rock paper scissors game with the devs shaking up the rules every few issues ( ok let's try rock beats paper and see how they like that!?!?)

but please give me a nudge in the right direction

i will post a build I prefer when I get back to my comp that has mids on it

Why does everyone want Werner's help

You'll want to get as much recharge as possible then slot for positional defense, aim for around 20% .

Pool Powers: CJ, SJ, Hasten, Tough, Weave, and Fitness.

Go DA it will help you with your survivability.

Ah, I was wondering why people keep asking for me by name. It's the serious avatar and the fact that I'm a braggart! But really, lots of people can help you with Katana/Regen, or any other scrapper. This board is FILLED with experts.

And honestly, I'm not really the best person to answer this question. I'm not even a GOOD person to answer this question. I don't PvP, so all my knowledge of it is peripheral. The following are UNEDUCATED GUESSES, given ONLY because it's embarrassing to not answer when asked for by name:

Skip Divine Avalanche. Defense is pretty useless, and unless you're fight-clubbing, nobody is going to just stand there and let you build up your defense anyway. You need to hit hard and fast. Divine Avalanche is not hard and fast.

Combat Jumping, Super Jump, but I'm guessing almost nobody is hitting hard enough to knock you back through Integration, so you wouldn't need Acrobatics. But what do I know.

Hurdle, Swift, Health, Stamina. The whole thing. Mobility is the name of the game.

Hasten and Superspeed. Two travel powers for mobility.

I'm not sure how good Stealth, Invisibility and phase are. Most people are packing a lot of perception anyway, and with any luck, you'll be doing more chasing than running. Phase might be nice, but there are purchasable phase temp powers, so don't waste the power pick.

I'm also not sure how good Assault and Tactics are. Well, Tactics is good for hitting through defense, but everyone is told that defense is useless, so maybe you can do with less to hit. Assault isn't very good damage for the endurance, but you should have endurance to spare, and every bit counts.

You might consider getting Tough. I suspect that exotic damage is very common, but you might as well have some resistance to smashing and lethal.

Web Grenade and Targeting Drone make sense to me.

I wouldn't bother with defense bonuses, since defense is useless. It's recharge, recharge, and more recharge, or at least as much as you can afford on your budget. I know they're expensive, but I'd blow half your budget on Luck of the Gamblers if necessary. Maybe some damage bonuses as well. You want to be chaining Golden Dragonfly -> Gambler's Cut -> Soaring Dragon -> Gambler's Cut. You only need the Achilles' Heel in Gambler's Cut. Put something else in Sting of the Wasp and Soaring Dragon.

And I'm going to stop there because of the no-PvP I don't know what I'm talking about thing.

Werner , in real life I am an older guy with a long beard and goggles so I feel a kindred spirit
If you want to be left alone I recommend you change your avatar to dead celebrity with a black and white starring at you back from the dead look

since you pvp as much as I have I appreciate your advice

it is similar from what I gleaned from reading 20 pages of pvp forum posts

the build I meant to post has all you recommend so I will find the post sanct mentioned and see if it adds any insight and give it a try

In real life, I look a lot like my avatar - heavy beard, flat top, well-built, middle-aged. Not enough to pose for one of those pictures of you and your character in the same costume, and I don't have the goggles and correct leathers to pose in anyway, but not so far off either.

As to PvP, you're going to want to generate 2 different attack strings. One which is cycled for long, drawn out fights against tough melees, and another that is short, sweet and eats the face of squishier characters.
The second one doesn't need to cycle specifically because, if you're using it, you should be having to chase your target down half the time and the other half you should be standing over their corpse if you manage to hit them with it. GD>GC>SD>GC will work for your cycling string, and, for your short string, GC>GD and GC>SD>GD should work well (which you use depends on how long you can ensure they'll stand there taking it to the face, remember that you just need to start the animation to get them to take the damage, so animation time only matters within the context of getting another attack in). Of course, BU should be interspersed as needed.

The reason why +def is seen as pointless in PvP is twofold: players have a base tohit of 75%, and players often have unholy gobs of +tohit and +acc. If you're packing 30% +def in PvE (a very respectable amount), a player attacking you will have a 95% chance to hit you if he's packing just 111% +acc, which is crazy common considering all of the set bonuses. The only characters that I would recommend slotting for +def would be power sets that already have lots of +def, and, because of that, get to run around with the sacred +elusivity. Elusivity, which is only accessible through primary +def powers in personal shields, iirc, is an end modifier that multiplies the end chance tohit by its inverse (re: 30% elusivity multiplies the chance to hit by .7). It's incredibly powerful. Of course, it needs to be because otherwise defense based characters would get eaten alive all the time. For more info on Elusivity, check out the Paragonwiki link, as well as the one on Attack Mechanics, paying specific mind to the fact that you're trying to avoid attacks from players.

For */regen in PvP, from what I've been told, your best bet to increase survivability is to crank out the +rech, +regen, and +hp, and ignore +def (except for the +rech being top priority in both, this is pretty much counter to everything I tell people about */regen in PvE). The +regen and +hp are needed to counter both diminishing returns and the -rech effects that will eat into your clickability (can't rely on perma-DP). The +rech is pretty obvious as to why. For offensive punch, +dam and procs are king.

Confront/Calling the Wolf can be great for PvP with the -rng debuff, but remember that, if you get it, it's going to need to hit in order to be effective, so you'll want to slot it a bit (6 piece Mocking Beratement, anyone?). Web 'Nade is nice, especially since it takes the immob purple set, but the immob doesn't last very long (~4.6488 sec with normal slotting, immob resist is common and reduces it further), so you'll need to close quickly (SS +SJ makes it easier). Either could work. I'd suggest getting one or the other, depending on whether you want/like Weapon Mastery or prefer one of the other APPs.

This is partly incorrect. Players have a base tohit of 50% in PvP. But the second is partly right, most PvP builds do have gobs of +tohit and +acc, so defense is still mostly useless.

Also, Katana would be one of my last choices for a PvP scrapper primary. PvP attack damage is *roughly* calculated from animation time. The very thing that makes Katana great in PvE (fast animating attacks) make it a poor choice for PvP.

The fast animating attacks are actually a curse and a boon simultaneously. Quickly getting off multiple attacks gives you more chance to react with your */regen clickies as well as a greater chance to continue enforcing movement suppression on the target and greater proc contribution. Of course, it's similarly countered by the inability to get off a single big heavy hitter while your target is running away.

Yeah I know katana is third best pvp scrapper power choice but it's my only lvl fifty scrapper so I am gonna stick with it

I will compile the advice I has recieved from Werner Umbral and Santorium
and call it my W.U.S. Build

when I defeat someone in pvp I will gloat and tell them they were beaten by a WUS

I have been known to PvP with a kat/regen scrapper on occasion. Couple of things:

1. Skip DA
--Defense is nearly worthless in PvP
--You need to output lots of damage FAST and DA will kill your DPS
2. Get recharge
3. Get recharge
4. Get web nade and targeting drone
--Web nade is uber annoying to ranged
--It causes recharge which is really annoying
--Helps lot with teammates who can attack while you spam the nade
5. Try to get any kind of slow resist possible (Winter's gift in travel power)
6. Get recharge
7. Only need gambler's cut, soariung dragon, and golden draginfly
--Nothing else besides nade
8. Build for recharge, +HP (maybe a tad bit of accuracy)

I would suggest posting this question in the PvP section of the boards where they tend to know a bit more about pvp mechanics

The achilles heel and force feedback procs would both be beneficial in the 6th spots in soaring dragon/golden dragonfly. Kind of a toss up between the -res and rech.

Ok, now with the additional awesome advice from Dave mebs, who is know to PVP with a Kat Regen, I have the new WUS 2.O

I had to change a few IO choices to keep it in my budget and change the lvl powers were selected so I could still pvp in SC with some kind of attack chain and have all my heals by 30

I droped the leadership and added the fighting/resilience for 21% s/l res

my recharge bonus with all procs firing has Mog up every 62.3 sec, without proc 84.3 sec
DP is up every 107 sec without the procs

I have a chance to double down on the neg res procs (AH + Glad fury) for a possible -40% (rare, but it could happen)

Max'd out HP at 2409
regen is 1551

with all damage procs hitting with BU my GD/GC/SD chain can do 1407 damage, with the rare -40% res, that might be a killer blow
ok very rare occurance, but it sure will wreck some dudes face when it happens

I have maxed out run speed (and the 20% run res) to keep up with the runners too

You had the 5% recharge bonus slotted 9 times. The rule of 5 states that it will only work 5 times so the extra 4 times are a waste. I reworked a lot of the enhancements, and they appear to be about the same price as before, maybe a tiny bit more. The changes I made should give you much more HP, runspeed, damage buffs, and mezresist. I also decided to stick with the -resist debuff enhancements instead of the force feedback proc. I think the -resist will be increase killspeed more than the added recharge.
