Setting reasonable expectations for upgrades.

Well, Going Rogue's big secret is out - there's going to be a way prettier graphics setting available to those with high-end machines.

Right now I've got a nice-ish PC, but I'm wanting to do an upgrade in the coming months (maybe after I get my taxes back).

My current machine (bought in 06): Core2Duo 6300 (1.8ghz), 4g RAM, Radeon 4670 w/1g ram, Windows 7 64-bit

I'm looking at an $800 PC: Intel i5 @ 2.66ghz, 4g RAM, GeForce 210 w/512m ram

Chances are what I'll do is switch the video cards and give my old computer to a friend of mine (elementary school teacher), as she likely wouldn't buy herself anything (especially with the cutback they've been having here). Later on I can get something nicer, video card wise.

Anyhow - I'm running at 1280x1024 with nice-ish settings. Framerate can be in the teens to 60, all depending on what's going on.

(you'll likely have to click on "all sizes" to read it)

I've got a 1920x1200 monitor, and while I would love to get to 45fps @ 1920x1200, thats' not hugely important to me.

I was wondering if you wonderful people with better machines could tell me about what you've got (hardware and performance-wise). I'm trying to set my expectations realistically here concerning what kind of performance I can hope for. I figure if I can handle the best settings COH can offer now with no problem, then hopefully with GR I'll be able to get the really pretty stuff with a playable framerate. I just don't know if I can hit that mark or not, though.

From discussions with Dark Watcher at HeroCon, I believe that your current video card should have little to no problems with all the shinies in Ultra Mode. Actually, he commented on my ATI 4850 HD w/1 Gb and said it will handle all but one of the new settings at max.

I can't recall what the feature is called, but if I go back and watch the video that is on YouTube I could probably come up with it.

The biggest problem I see with your current rig is the processor.

I'd recommend finding one of Father Xmas' posts and looking at the rigs in his signature. He tends to keep them fairly well updated.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Well you have a nice kick in CPU power there, twice the cores with roughly twice the performance per core. Sadly the same can't be said with that video card which is about 1/3 as powerful as what you currently have so swapping the cards is a good idea for now.

Also it is highly likely that the power supply in that $800 system will be mediocre at best (one reason for the weak video card) so any video card upgrade should include an upgraded power supply.

Now it seems that the updates to the graphics engine also resolves the quirks this game has with ATI graphics, at least according to Hero-con reports, this means that ATI should be able to be recommended with a clean conscience. However the video card market is always shifting, lets see what 6 to 9 months brings us in both performance and price.

I'm not tied emotionally to ATI or Nvidia so I've got no trouble going with the market's sweet spot when I'm ready to upgrade.

What kind of performance should I be expecting for the current highest settings? I'm hoping it would be pretty good? I recall reading in an *old* Anandtech article that COH/V tends be more CPU defendant?
