My laptop is acting bizarre( Not directly related to CoX)

So I was playing CoX yesterday when my laptop just froze up so I hit the power button to turn it off as nothing else was responding. Upon reboot I can no longer access the ctrl+alt+del menu it just freezes and gives some security error. As I type this I am copying (or hoping that it is copying) my CoX folder to an external HD along with anything else I might want to save in case this is unsolvable by anything but reformat.

My dad used to fix computers for a living and we've been working on this blasted thing for hours.

Booting into safe mode takes an unusually long time when it gets to crcdisk.sys

Also I can't seem to get windows updates to actually work.

Any advice, details you'd like that I forgot?

If you're running Win XP, pop in the operating system disc and boot to it. It'll give you a blue screen that tells you it's loading drivers, config files, etc etc.

When it finally gives you a prompt, hit "R" to go to the Recovery Console.

If asked which Windows installation you're attempting to recover, hit 1.

Type "CHKDSK /R" and it will attempt to repair your hard drive. I've found this to be particularly effective if you get into a situation where one of your Windows files becomes corrupted, as it will likely be able to repair the file.

This relatively quick fix (30-60 min, can be left unmanned when started) has worked more times for me than not when I've been in similar situations on Windows XP. I don't have enough experience with Vista or Windows 7 to know if this will be equally effective, but it probably can't hurt to try it either.
