DC'ing during a TF
Unfortunately, if you aren't in for a significant portion of the final mission, you miss out on credit for the TF. For this reason most TF teams will wait longer than usual for a dropped person on the last mission to avoid just this result, but sadly sometimes things happen and as in your case you weren't able to get back.
It sucks, but you will most likely need to repeat the TF to get your badge and merits since there is no way for a GM to know that you were in fact on that TF. Since you were never in the last mission, you didn't get credit. Often people who d/c during the last mission will still get credit for the TF if they were in the mission for a significant portion of the time (I'm not certain precisely what this cutoff is, or of anyone outside of the Devs really knows), but if you were never able to set foot in the door then, sadly, you're SOL.

Why does it all fall on the last mission?
For lack of a better description, the game only remembers one mission at a time. All the rewards are for completing the last mission in a TF. If there were some bizzare way to do only that mission instead of the whole TF, you'd still get the TF rewards.
In the beginning, TFs were just a normal story arc with some special rules regarding the invites and team structure. Think of the TF badges as the same as mission badges that you have to do some preliminary missions to get to. The finale is the reward for going through those missions. At the time, they didn't have any way to monitor how long someone was on the full TF how much they did, etc.
They could and do monitor how much of the final mission a character is present for, and base the reward on that. This may seem unfair to someone in your situation, but overall, the system that doesn't force someone to be present for X% of all the missions ends up being more flexible and fair when we're dealing with real world people and expecting them to sit at the computer for 1-4 hours.
Since that time, they've improved the technology (as you can see when it comes to the Challenge Settings for Ouroboros arcs and TFs) but it's their habit to not go back and fix something that isn't broken unless there's a compelling reason to do so. If at some point they go back and take a look at the entire system, they may redesign things, but they try to avoid just tweaking bits and pieces, since that tends to break other bits and pieces.

We'd start a TF, all log off, the friend with time during the day would solo the whole TF, then we'd log back on for the last mission as a group in the evening.
Still completely possible to do, but be aware that (1) spawn sizes are set for all the people on the TF, logged on or not, so the soloer better be able to handle large spawns and (2) you need to keep a minimum of 2 people on the TF for it to continue, so you can't have all but you actually QUIT the TF.
This is also to keep people from pulling the 'ole "Oh, I dc'ed 'accidently' through no fault of my own and never managed to log back on but I still get full reward lol" trick.

Rock, rock on Hamster.
In fact it doesn't take a particularly bizarre way; several friends and I all got a number of TF badges after they put TF Commander in because one of us was unemployed at the time and the rest of us could get on briefly in the morning and evening.

Last night I was running the Positron TF and my internet quit on my way to the very last mission. I tried to fix it but eventually gave up after about 15 minutes of messing around and went to bed.
When I logged on this morning, I did not receive any of the rewards for completing the TF. I was under the impression that if you were on the team long enough, you were still rewarded for completing the TF. Any reason why I wouldn't have received the badge or the merits?
