non CoH computer question
Sounds like your computer is infested with something.
What antivirus software are you using? Is it up to date? Do you have any anti-malware programs? I'd recommend SpyBoy Search and Destroy and Adaware (NOT "Adware"!)... Malwarebytes (sp?) is also recommended pretty often on these boards.

I highly, highly recommend Avast, especially when the problem is revolving around IE. I installed it after a nasty infestation and I haven't had an issue since.
Plus, it just seems to go with your name.

| not sure if I should ask here or not but I know you guys are smart and might be able to help me. I keep getting the error "iexplore has encountered a problem and must close... etc". Not unusual except for the fact that... I was not running IE when it pops up. It happens a lot when I'm in game. then... I started hearing strange music while I was in game... I quit... the music was still going. I pulled up my task manager and iexplore.exe was running, without my asking it to run... when I did end task on it, the music stopped. Ok. so I ran a virus scan. I have the lastest updates from symantic and no virus was found. so... any ideas? |
Check out this thread, Common Solutions & Posting Guidelines
Then post the results of these two programs in a new thread in the tech forum explaining your problem there:
- CoH Helper - it will show us basic computer settings and your CoH configuration.
- HijackThis - it will show us what's running on your computer concurrently with CoH. Click on "Do a system Scan and save a logfile." It will automatically open up Notepad and put the info there. Make sure Wordwrap is off in Notepad (Format > Wordwrap unchecked) before you cut and paste here.

NOTE: If you suspect you have a virus on your computer, then when you install HijackThis do not install it in a directory called 'HijackThis' -- modern viruses look for that and disable anything in that directory. Rename it. Also, when it starts up, do *not* run a report. Back out of the program and rename the HijackThis.exe file to something else (I renamed mine to Love.exe ) -- again, to fool the modern viruses that would stop it from running. ) -- again, to fool the modern viruses that would stop it from running.

thanks! I'm certainly going to try Avast.
Avast is excellent; I use it and recommend it to everyone. I hate to see people pay good money for antivirus software when some of the best solutions are free.

Avast is definitely not worse for your computer than having no antivirus at all.
Alternatively, Avira AntiVir is also nice, I use the free version. It has popup nags but it's possible to get around them (google works wonders).

), as the home version is free (no nag screens! ), I was actually more so referring to Norton and McAffee... though I've heard claims that Norton has gotten "better" (Norton at least used to be able to turn any machine into a slow pile of crap, while being the least likely of all the popular AV software out there to catch anything).

Our IT guy reccomended Norton and my dad installed it, though I was skeptical since I've heard Norton is worse than some viruses. Is it still that bad?

But it's still a bloated piece of crap. I apparently it's gotten a bit better with norton 360/antivirus 2009, but you really can't go wrong with Avast, to be honest.

Also, in the past a few viruses used Norton's own defenses against the system: They'd hide in Norton's 'quarantine' section, which Norton hides from the rest of the system and doesn't scan... making it extremely hard to discover them.

Norton AV and Kodak EasyShare are the two worst viruses I've come across in many years as an IT guy.

Well now, Avast found two little trojans on my system that Norton completely missed. And I haven't had my IE problem since letting Avast deal with it.
Guess I know what anti-virus I'm sticking with now

It's the same thing that happened to me. I'm glad it worked for you!
