Vista install doesn't reformat HD?

I'm in the middle of a Vista re-install. Necessary for various reasons.
I noticed the little prompt indicating the "old windows files still accessible" and wondered why these are not erased. There doesn't even seem to be a option to do so. So Vista doesn't reformat the drive you install it on? There is not option to do so? Should I reformat the drive elsewhere? |
Here's how to do it with a full install version.
Here's how to do it with an upgrade version.
Essentially, when you get to the section where it specifies drive location (not drive letter), you get an option to delete the partition on the drive.
No, it won't do it automatically.
Yes, you could use something else to wipe the partition and then install clean. But it's not necessary.
I followed the steps for the full install. It still created a Windows.old file.
According to explorer, Windows.old is a 74 GB file. Why do I need this?
EDIT: NVM. upon closer review of the link it seems I missed a step. Trying again. THanks.

Technically, you don't need the .old stuff. You can kill it. It's just there in case you wanted to recovery any files from the old Windows directory.
