Your request is a bit confusing becasue you ask for top notch recommedations, but then give a medium quality example.
If you want to stay closer to the price of the 9800 GT, the following card is significantly better for not much more.

However if you really want to move into the high end cards, consider the following. It's almost double the original, but it is also about double the power.
