A REAL Illusion Troller Guide
[ QUOTE ]
Spectral Wounds
Your first power in the set, and a nice one too. This has High DMG which is very weird for a Controller but your enemy heals if you leave them too long. Personally I use this as my main offensive power. There's no reason not to take this.
Rating: 4/5
[/ QUOTE ]
No mention of Containment or the Illusionary damage heal-back?
[ QUOTE ]
Blind
Your first mez in the set. It's pretty good too. It lasts for a decent time before slotting. It also has a chance to mez other enemies which is nice. Like Spectral Wounds, I see no reason not to take this.
Rating: 4/5
[/ QUOTE ]
Mez? Whats "mez"? What sort of mez? Can I "mez" bosses? Lieuts? AVs? What's this chance of mezzing other enemies?
[ QUOTE ]
Deceive
Ahhh this one. Well this is really personal opnion. If you a CoX version of Jedi Mind Trick, this is it. It allows them to attack other enemies, which is useful for getting Minions and stuff to attack AVs. Unfortunately, Bosses+ won't get the effect, so Minions and Lts you can only use it on. Also, you won't get any XP for a enemy defeated using Deceive, so don't do it when a AVs on low health! Overall, it's personal opnion. Some think it's a waste of time. Well personally it will be useful in low levels but high levels you'll leave it out. I took it and used it in low levels, I don't use it any more, but it's still on my build for fun if I want to deceive a Hellion.
Rating: 3/5
[/ QUOTE ]
Completely and utterly wrong. An enemy defeated by a deceived mob plus you will give you quite a lot of the XP. I suggest you read up on it before posting incorrect information about it.
[ QUOTE ]
Flash
Another down to personal opnion. I took this at first but respec'd it out, it wasn't good enough for me. It didn't have good enough ACC really. And I didn't really want to waste slots on it, so I dumped it. But some people have found it useful. Down to opnion again.
Rating: 2.5/5
[/ QUOTE ]
Mind telling us what it actually does instead of talking about slots and Acc?
[ QUOTE ]
Superior Invisibility
Yet another one down to personal opnion. I took it to ghost mishes. It doesn't really have any other use than that. If you don't want to do stuff like ghosting missions, then you don't need it.
Rating: 2.5/5
[/ QUOTE ]
Again, what does it do? You're supposed to be writing a guide. How does it work?
[ QUOTE ]
Group Invisibility
Meh at this. Who wants their whole team invisied? Just leave it out.
Rating: 0/5
[/ QUOTE ]
Why wouldn't a team want to be invised? Give a proper reason rather than "meh". I've used this plenty of times on a whole team for various reasons (ghosting, recon, giving us the ability to set up before attacking a spawn etc).
[ QUOTE ]
Phantom Army
TAKE THIS! It's one of the best powers in the game. I mean, c'mon, 3 invincible damage dealers. What more could you want!? That's all I'm going to say. Great power. Just take it.
Rating: 5/5
[/ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ]
That's all I'm going to say.
[/ QUOTE ]
Pity, because thats not enough. Mention healback, how to use it, how long it lasts, what happens when the PAs disappear. What sort of damage they do.
[ QUOTE ]
Spectral Terror
This is a additonal mezzer, useful if Blind and Flash aren't enough. I use it quite often as it's pretty good. But some builds live without it. So, yeah, I think you should take it. Unless you have a uber build of course.
Rating: 4/5
[/ QUOTE ]
What is it and how does it work? Define "mezzer"
[ QUOTE ]
Phantasm
Last tier in the set and very useful IMO. Not as good as PA, but really helps. It's not invincible, but it doesn't have a ending time. Decent damage. Yeah, take it and love it.
Rating: 4/5
[/ QUOTE ]
What does it do? No mention of the Decoy it casts, the knockback NRG attacks?
[ QUOTE ]
OK, that's it...have fun playing Ill trollers...hope you found the serious guide to Ill trollers useful...
[/ QUOTE ]
Not at all. Awful guide with no real details on how anything works. Someone would be better off working off the power descriptions to be honest.
I'll try not to repeat what's already been said.
Firstly; it is an improvement over your earlier guide, so thankyou for making the effort.
Personal opinion is great for guides; you use it to good effect, and for that I applaud you. You've clearly learnt to use the powers for yourself from scratch rather than from drily reading up on the power descriptions.
I would say, though, that some of the descriptions could be a little more considered. I've already mentioned how useful personal opinion is; as the in-game power information becomes more transparent, there's less need for the statistics-only type of guide, so the community tends to look to player guides more for an actual description of how the power feels in use, how it fits into attack chains and builds, and what sort of returns you'll get from slotting variations. However, posting actual numbers as well prevents the need to use a second reference source (such as the game itself or Red Tomax) and can clarify in the readers' minds what to expect from certain powers.
People are more likely to take opinion onboard when it's backed up by plenty of explanation; it's good to take each power in turn (as you have done) and think about what is good as well as bad, and post it all. Otherwise, any rating system can seem a touch arbitrary.
I tend to sweat and toil over my (albeit few thus far) guides until they are just exactly as I want them; I like to work out what audience I'm pitching them to.
There are several main audiences I consider;
<ul type="square">[*]Comedy seekers;[*]Set-naive players, thinking about what set to use on their new character;[*]Leveling players, looking at what they should leave out, how their build is going so far, or what they could pick at a certain level;[*]Hardened veterans, looking for alternative views on power picks and slotting for a level 50 respec.[/list]
There are, of course, plenty more reasons why different people read guides; I hope occasionally with mine it's for entertainment value. Whatever audience you're pitching to, it's good to consider everyone who might be checking up on it. For that reason, I think it's a good idea to introduce the guide well; give people a good overview of the set, what it's strengths and weaknesses are, how it compares to other sets in its AT, how it performs in teams and on its own, and so forth.
Similarly, in rounding off the guide, it's good to give a few tips from actual play; enemies to look out for, particularly good teaming synergies, how well it synergises with different secondary sets, what sets you may want to consider buying into, whether any pools or particular travel powers are immensely useful, and so forth.
Remember a guide should be what you think the set is about; be sure to distinguish between hard numerical fact and your thoughts on powers. Make it more than a list of powers with some consideration about the powers in it.
Wilf, over and out.
DON'T eat muffins while I'm developing you.

I guess I finally found the dark side of the Internet. And I am not refering to the OP trying to make a guide now... :S

Last I heard, Deceive was stackable on Bosses. The line about Bosses not being able to be Deceived... is a lie. Even Elite Bosses can be Deceived with enough applications.

I have a pair of Mind/Rads, I use confuse a lot... most mobs! I have successfully confused everything I have faced upto and including AVs. AFAIK Confuse and Decieve are the same power (just in different sets).
This guide doesn't really help me at all, i have a lvl 50 ilu/kin controller and you havn't told me anything i didn't already know, the topic is just about your opinions on the powers and the names of them.

Another thread revival...and now one of my guides...what is the world coming to?
Also, that's what guides are about. Go figure. If you know what the set does, don't expected to come to the guide to learn something new about the powers and all.

I'd disagree with that myself. A good guide makes you stop and go "Hey, nice idea", even if you thought you knew the sets already. Maels guide about Katana from earlier in the week is a good example. I'll frequently read guides on sets I know a fair bit about to see if there are any tricks and tips in there I've missed.
Like Confusing an AV, takes a while since you've to double (or triple?)-stack it and wait for the Triangles to drop, but its very funny watching an AV suddenly use their horrible AOE power on their allies. If you've no suitable tank and / or are waiting for the PAs to recharge it can be well worth doing.
There are so many guides out now, especially for older sets like Illusion, that its really only worth writing one if you're prepared to add additional information. For example I think with i11 sticking Knockback/Recharge IOs into Phantasm makes him fire quicker (I think, I haven't tested properly yet).

You're not seriously trying to defend this terrible guide are you? Having said that I have learnt something even after all the time I've played my Illusion controller I never knew that

My troller must be bugged since deceive has worked fine on many Bosses, EB's and AV's including such beauties as Clockwork King & Dr Aeon.
I've found that writing a "Basic" guide requires just as much attention to detail and skill as a complex one, you need to cover the important parts accurately and with the minimum of verbage.
I'm sorry I've not been able to just ignore this like I would usually but for some reason its just got me goat, as someone who enjoys reading other players opinions and guides on powersets I have/fancy having this just irritates, it helps no-one.
Not trying to have a go its a friday after all here have a beer *passes out booze*.
Kneeling girls! Statues driving cars! What's going on? Ten years ago a man was arrested in the area for driving statues around in a car. Was it him?

Should rename IM's guides to Misguides...
There are a lot of borderline personal attacks in this thread that are simply not necessary. If you don't like the content of the guide posted then you may discuss that content and point out your areas of disagreement.
You may not discuss the person who posted the guide, especially in relation to your opinion of them or any other personal comments. Remember that a new post to a thread brings it back to the top of the forum index.
