Don't believe so. A lot of AE mobs are a LOT stronger than standard mobs.

Turn off BG and see what happens. I didn't notice anything on my MM earlier today /shrug

You're sure they're in follow/defensive mode? You haven't ordered them to attack or anything?

I haven't done anything in AE to compare, however I ran Grandville missions last night and this morning and everything has worked for me as it always has.
I run exclusively in bodyguard mode. What you might be seeing is when you switch from any other mode to bodyguard mode, it takes a few seconds to kick in, where you will take full damage in between.
