I don't like the new faces.

They're rendered nicely and all, but they're all just scowling. I was hoping for some expression, a few more smirks, maybe some raised eyebrows, or a maniacal grin. These are just kind of... bland, and soulless. And kind of look like subtle variations of each other.

Sorry, I'm just disappointed.

Anyone else?

I am not a fan either. They all look pretty bad to me, but some folks like them.

Takes all kinds... because some of them, to me, are truly great.

I never say no to more faces and more hairstyles in the game, because the more the merrier.

Not disappointed in the slightest. The grimacing faces always bothered me, personally, because while it's nice to have an expression every now and then, having an expression that IS your face is not my cup of tea. I prefer expressionless faces because they fit everyone.

Specifically, I made me a new villain with the emptiest face I could find, which simply MADE the character. One of the new male faces, I don't remember which one, which is both completely empty of any emotion, yet still sinister and scary in its almost-blank eyes.

Sorry, I can't help it.

I don't mind that they added some deadpan serious faces for the serious business crowd. What I mind is that they didn't add anything else. Variety is a good thing, especially with new content.

If I were home right now, I'd save that pic. No use for saving it at work, though, bloody multiple computers!

I don't like specific-expression faces because they become DEFINED by their expressions, and a character stuck with a permanent green or a permanently raised eyebrow is pretty silly. Our faces are carved in stone as soon as we slap them on, so the most neutral expression works best. The hideously goof grin, fro instance, doesn't make the character look like he smiles a lot, it makes him look like he's a braindead idiot.

As long as our expressions don't change, expressionless is the most appropriate choice because that's actually the neutral state of face for just about everyone.

I, on the other hand, enjoy expressive faces. My Bots/Traps MM that is plotting to take over Paragon City has the huge, zany "muahahahaha!" smirk. My hands on hips, spandex wearing, cape sporting super hero Nuclear Dander has the goofy grin. It, to me, adds so much to the character.

When I first made Nuclear Dander I gave him one of the souless faces. It never fit. It made him dull, just like all the others. The goofy grin fits him perfectly, and makes him feel more alive than the blank stare faces.

There is a place for all the options, I think. I have other ideas for heroes that just scream for some sort of golden age grin. I'm always appreciative of new options, but I, too, would like a bit more variety.

I use them to represent my character. Everyone knows that your face can't move, so it's silly to pretend that it's your character's constant expression. Instead, it displays their demeanor and gets an image across, just like every other part of your costume.

If I use the smiling face, I'm not roleplaying a guy whose face is stuck, I'm roleplaying a guy who's generally happy and smiles a lot. It's impossible to make these plastic doll characters realistic, so I find it better to just be expressive, and these faces aren't very flexible (hi-yo!) in that sense.

I am sure there is a smiling face in there for females. Not all the faces have the same expression.

True, but most of them range from expressionless, to expressionless but hiding barely-repressed malice. I actually used one to indicate just that.

I suppose my original point was that since faces are unchanging, it doesn't make sense to lock them in a single, non-natural expression because it looks goofy. I've always been a believer that people's idle faces betray their actual personalities, such as man who always frowns has a face that looks like it's ever so subtly frowning when it's relaxed. I've made characters who were intended to be happy, and for those I picked the faces that looked like they were ever so subtly perky while not actually showing any meaningful expression. I can't imagine EVER picking the ear-to-ear cheesy grin perma-chiselled on a character's face because I can't stand always seeing that horrible thing every time I log into my server. If a character is easy-going and smiles a lot, that would have an effect on his face, making it more joyful and pleasant, but it will NOT face-lock him into a horrible smile.

Not being able to stand the horribly goofy faces probably has something to do with it, too.

The last two new female faces are happy-ish expressions.

I agree. What we need is more than one type of cheesy grin.

Are you talking about the Supernatural male one with a lot of eyeshadow and very slight veining...? It is sinister and I LOVE IT....

That is a fantastic face; I put it on a new character and it just transformed him. I think that is my favorite of the entire lot, male or female.

Funny thing is, I had one of those "GRRR!" faces on my Stalker when I first made him, because it fit his character. After being laughed at by everyone who saw it, he got a trip to the tailor PDQ. No one laughs at him now... he recently beat BaB to a quivering pulp, and no he didnt use Shivans or Nukes to do it.

The only time I have seen a good use of the male "expression" faces was when someone on Guardian had a traditional "spaceman"-type of character, he was really friendly and nice and that big silly grin suited him perfectly. Perfect bio, too. Not many characters can pull that sort of thing off; I know my Stalker couldn't.

One nice thing about the new faces is that they have a very reflective quality, which allows them to reflect ambient light. Their texture is completely different from the old faces. Sure hope we get more of these soon! [hint hint]
