No NPC chat bubbles

The problem is seen in two places. The first is with NPC dialog chat bubbles and the second is with my mastermind's pet bubbles. I don't see any of them. When playing through missions, I don't see the enemies say anything anymore. I thought it could be just the missions I was on that didn't have the content, but I still don't see chat bubbles on Mission Architect missions where I know they should be talking. With my pets, I have a few macros to make them say thing and act out little scenes. I no longer see the chat bubbles from them either, and I've checked with other players who tell me that my pets are talking. The macros are working, my game isn't.

I noticed this problem when I started playing CoH/V on my new PC, so I'm inclined to blame it on Vista. Has anyone else seen this problem before? What should I try to fix it?

Thanks.

There are a couple settings you could look for to make sure the options didn't change on your new system:

Menu> Options> General> Chat> "Chat Balloons" > "Enabled"
Menu> Options> General> Chat> "Pet Response Text" > (not "Disabled")

Also, check your chat tabs and make sure at least one of them has all the following:
Cutscene Captions
NPC dialog
Pets

You can even hide them on a Tab4 somewhere if you don't want to see them show up in your normal chat, but that should make sure you see all the chat bubbles.

Thanks, I'll try this when I get home tonight. I did check the chat options, but didn't know about having the proper channels in the tabs.

I heard there were some changes with the text system (I haven't played in about a year), but I didn't realize that it would hide bubbles that you didn't have a window for.

[/ QUOTE ] I think it's been since i12 (last year) that the "Cutscene Captions" was added, and people started having issues with bubbles appearing. Adding "Cutscene Captions" fixed the Cutscenes for people, so I assume you wont see a bubble for anything else you don't have in your chat.

That's strictly my assumption, as I haven't done any extensive tests or anything, but based on what has worked for people so far... it's safer to just have them on a hidden tab anyway just in case it's not intended behavior and/or a bug that only happens once in a while for some people.

Every time I make a new character, I have to add these. I do put them on chat tab 4 also. It seems the default is to NOT have them, which is quite annoying.

Once you have your chat window set the way you want it you can save it to be your default using Menu > Options > General Tab, and near the bottom there is a "Chat settings File" section with buttons to save/load the chat settings.

Hit the "Save to default file" button.

The slash commands to do the same thing would be :

/chat_save [Saves a list of chat settings to COH_INSTALL_DIRECTORY\chat.txt]
/chat_load [Reads a list of chat settings from COH_INSTALL_DIRECTORY\chat.txt]

/chat_save_file filename [Saves a list of chat settings to a file named "filename"]
/chat_load_file filename [Reads a list of chat settings from a file named "filename"]

Yeah, this sounds like my problem and it makes sense as a solution.

I'm pretty sure this will work, but it'll have to wait until tonight to see. If I don't post again, then this worked.

Thanks again for all the help!
