ARENA : UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Too bad they didn't get it done for issue 3 like they were planning...

We were? Wow. I had no idea!
[/ QUOTE ]
Heh.. never thought Statesman would reply to something I said.. not the type of response I was hoping to get if he ever did...
I could have sworn I read a post that you were trying to get the arena up for issue 3... heh, oh well.. my memory is far from perfect!
If anyone needs me, I'll be off hiding in the corner till this disappears from the Dev Digest..

I wonder if all the lumber and rebar used in the building of the arena is going to be carried onsite on the shoulders of the constructions workers.
"Why bother loading up a truck when we can just get Brent here to haul it in on his back?"
[/ QUOTE ]
Not only will it be carried on the shoulders of the workers, it will be transported across the city on the Elevated Train. "Just take that rebar on the Yellow line from Skyway to Steel Canyon, walk over to the Green line and take the train to Talos."

Construction Worker Bob: "You know, I was thinking... the Hospital has these cool transporter things. And the prison. Don't you think we could get one of those and move all this construction material with it?"
Construction Foreman: "Bob, you're not paid to think. You're paid to haul materials! Now pick up that pile of I-Beams and start walking around aimlessly like you were told!"

looks ALOT like its all card based, which is great, should be very entertaining.
[/ QUOTE ]
Hmmmm. Interesting. So when you speculate that it may be like Magic: The Gathering I assume you do not mean that they are installing a card game into CoH (I picture a bunch of heroes sitting around playing Yu Gi Oh (which would be lame)) but that this card system is a new way of interacting with the environment.
And since everyone says Statesman only responds to misquotes, I read somewhere that "the card system is just the initial step towards turning the game into a massive game of solitaire." In response to whether or not this would alienate fans of CoH, Statesman gave the interviewer the double fisted middle finger and walked out of the room. I wonder if he wants to clarify this issue.
Oh wait, nevermind. I misread. -_-;;

You really should try to keep up on that sort of thing, States. If you read the forums regularily, you can find out tons of stuff I bet you didn't know you were thinking.

HAHAAHAHA!!! It's funny because it's *true*

wolverine: i play the great stoogers!
magneto: NOOOO!!!
I remeber the construction workers talking on test.... but what were they saying that makes you guys think this?
They talk about an arena numerous times.

what do heroes do besides fighting?
they:
Are Scholars
Are Detectives
Are Scientists/inventors
Are Journalists/photographers
im sure more will be added down the line, the question is how to you represent those career paths without making for some boring activities. Do you want to make it like other crafting where you watch a progress bar while you 'do your job' ?
or do you make a mini game that characters can draw from while on a mission? having trouble finding that last glowie? dont worry HEROX is a highly skilled Detective he will find it in no time.
some more stuff i have read leads me to beleive you will be able to interact with freed civies, and interrogate defeated villians.
i imagine its like a quick mini-game that scales against your skills, not a full-blown Magic the gathering tournament.
its a good idea, and far better then watching a 'hacking' progress bar while it does a skill check. it also allows a skilled player to operate *above* their skill level.
Most likely the "cards" will be basically a new set of inspirations designed to aid your roll with the skill in question.
What I hope will happen is that the skills will allow you to unlock other missions, "bonus" missions if you wish to consider them such.

[ QUOTE ]
Skills are City of Heroes' answer to the ubiquitous MMO crafting system - except they're totally different. Characters will be able to specialize in one of four different skill trees: Detective, Science, Communication, and Scholarship. They can further specialize in various areas of expertise, such as Forensics or Security for the Detective tree. Skills are level-independent and wholly optional; your character will be able to interact with myriad objects during the game, at which point he, (Ed. note: or she ), can attempt a series of skill checks. Success brings new objectives or perhaps some extra experiance. For example, succeeding at a Security check in a bomb infested building might reveal the explosives on the mission map.
Skills are learned and improved by studying at universities throughout Paragon City. You'll earn temporary, expendable skill boosts during missions; these are somewhat similar to inspirations but can also be converted into wisdom, which is used to add permanent skill boosts at the aformentioned universities. As with enhancements, you'll find generic skill improvements as well as stronger, more focused upgrades alon the lines of dual- and single- origin enhancements. The only skill you'll need now, though, is the patience to hold out for all this good stuff.

This thread is great and all, but what happened to the Arena?
Seriously.
Statesman may be coy about the Issue 3 remarks (that he never made), but he did say in an interview that it would be in before CoV. It's available from the old news/press releases, but I don't want to search for it. My thread on the Arena went away with the usual 2-week purge.
Now, should Cryptic be held to a statement made to a "journalist" about the game? No, absolutely not.
On the other hand, when the game's been out for 8 months and we still haven't heard anything on the arena, it might be a good idea to put something out there in the official forums. The usual cryptic remarks would be fine. Something to debate ad nauseum.
Seems to me like Cryptic has alot on their plate...think of it...Issue 3 where they have to implement and test Kheldians and new powers. They are also working on CoV and trying (or not) to come up with a PvP and a new "crafting" system. Now maybe they have different teams working on these different projects (if not ...they should) but it can be overwhelming. Meanwhile you have players whining about:
1. The Kheldians not being available for any level below lvl 50 (booohooohooo)
2. The many oh-so-unfair power nerfs (I have a 50 rifl/dev blaster, was 30 when nerf came out and miraculously managed to deal with it *sarcasm) boohoohoo some more.
3. And believe it or not whining about how Statesman does not respond religiously to every post (Im sorry I rather have the guy work on the game then respond to posts all day long)
So people lets take a step back and remember the olden days where a game came out, we liked it or didnt and played it or not)

Errr... maybe I'm being stupid, but surely the fact that an Arena is being built IN THE GAME is pretty big proof that its being worked on?
Did you misread the first post or something?

um is that COV that isnt even close to beta yet?
the arena is in construction, states has said he hoped to get it in #4, even if it slips to #6 it will still beat COV.
theres no rush here people.
LOL States u silly man
I really dont know anything about this SSOCS thing really, but a card based game would IMHO be a reasonably cool way of doing it... FFVIII anyone? afterall it is *out of combat* and completely optional, so if u dont like YuGiOh (i dont) then dont play it, i dont really like doing my own missions very often, so i dont (note to self, should have finished that lvl 20 arc waaaay before lvl 37 the other day).
And finally... Super Secret Out (of) Combat System = SSOCS not SSOCOS, cant believe some ppl... my pet hate is the "respect" mission? wth is that, yeah man i respect you so much more now that you've respecified your powers *whines*
OMW to check out PI on test now
