  1. I'd be with ya Eva with banhammering the exploit-builders, but if I can make a spurious assumption, I'd expect that whomever was in charge of banning would end up nailing way too many non-guilty parties. That's not including the potential for griefers to fraudulently report a "farm builder" and get people banned inappropriately.

    I think there were some decent changes to the MA, the critter XP nerf was annoying but it was controllable and capable of being moderated. The Ally Nerf feels way too scattershot for me.

    So, I'm done with XP in MA. I'm not changing my arcs, if people don't like how I build them, F-- 'em. I'm not writing them to PL anyone.
  2. I'm actually serious. After the Ally Nerf, why not do this? If the devs are concerned about exploits for PLing, why not just cut out all the time and effort they are doing in order to plug holes in the system?

    Kill XP in the Mission Architect.

    It was a nice try, we appreciated the idea of being able to go from 1 to 50 in AE - but maybe it is more trouble than it is worth.

    I'm not saying that we necessarily have to kill rewards in the AE system. Tickets have become a very important part of the marketplace and economy, and inf/prestiege rewards still make the system somewhat attractive for those who want rewards for their efforts.

    But fixing the XP exploits is pulling manpower away from other features and patches which could sorely use some love. Exploiters love to talk about how the devs will "never stop us!!!1!!11", maybe it's time for the devs to put that boast to the test.

    Just a thought.

    NB: I am not complaining about "farmers", folks who feel like they want to repetitively experience content in order to force rewards. I recognize that farming, for good or ill, is something that the in-game economy and marketplace is essentially reliant upon. I am talking about exploits, which goes beyond farming, IMO.

    And when I read the patch notes, it was the "worst case scenerio" that came to mind. It even seemed "logical" from a certain, skewed perspective. Who knows how the MA scripts are parsing what "Ally" means?

    Later, Venture suggested that it may have included patrols and battles on one of his arcs.

    WTF! How is that even REMOTELY reasonable?
    Laz, can you go in and replace that ally with an ally-aligned patrol and see if it still happens? I'm curious if the nerf is affecting those too and whether its on a per-critter basis (3-ally patrol < 8-ally patrol) for calculating the XP crash.

    - Having to constantly retool their perfectly good arcs every time something breaks.
    - Having to constantly retool their perfectly good arcs every time something is changed to fix some exploit.
    - A horrible search engine that pretty much ensures most of our arcs will never be played.
    - A horrible rating system that gives too much weight to the "opinion" of anyone with three seconds to spare and the desire to click "Play" and click one star, thereby relegating something someone put a lot of effort into back to the depths of said horrible search engine, behind farm after farm and that arc some guy slapped together and got his friend to 5-star.
    - A reduced player base for said arcs that a lot of effort is put into because players increasingly have to choose between playing through something new, interesting, and well-written, and getting half-decent rewards.
    Once again Eva comes in and says it all a lot better than I did.

    At this point I am definitely throwing down my pen and walking toward the side of the fence where the "Kill XP for MA" Camp is setting up. At this point, XP rewards are pulling down the whole system to the basest, common denominator.

    I have to agree with Fred on this, the story-telling portion of the MA is not harmed by this, in so much as there is nothing preventing users from using the system for that purpose. The presence of XP or rewards is superfluous if the purpose of using the AE system is to tell and enjoy a story provided by another player.

    However.

    The problem with this nerf is the fact that rewards and xp are a significant portion of a player's appeal to the AE system in general. At present, it is difficult enough for an individual MA Author to get plays on their arcs once it falls below the 5-star threshold (and there are a host of reasons for this, and other threads address them). To place in a new disincentive for players to enjoy the arcs that authors are making creatively impoverishes those attempting to use this tool to expand the boundaries of what the players can experience.

    I believe that people who care about their arcs and how they perform in the community are going to find their popularity and critical-reception suffering because there are "too many allies" or "doesn't give sufficient reward for risk". I want to make my story-based arcs as friendly to a casual player as possible, and sometimes that means pandering to the need for a demonstrable reward for the gracious expendature of time that the player is making. This nerf makes that job even harder than it was before.

    And suggesting that an author refrain from using any function of the interface is as fallacious as suggesting that an author of prose fiction refrain from using the common mechanisms and conceits of literature to tell their stories ("Hey Mr. Bradbury, I know you like to use flashbacks, but we're gonna have to levy a 2% cut to your royalties for each instance in the novel 'cause we had bad experiences/responses in other works you didn't write").

    Functionally, no, it doesn't stop us from writing stories using the MA. What it will do is negatively effect how we write them, and complicate the (non-narrative) considerations that authors have to take into mind in order to make that story "marketable".

    Yeah, I knew about the buffbots and I can tell this patch is supposed to be making use of those subject to diminishing returns. I'd just like some clarification on what details/features in the MA are subject to pinging the nerf bat so I can avoid using them. I'm still annoyed that my story arcs are going to be pig-slapped for trying to help a solo player (I just realized that my 'Inhuman Resources' arc has 1-4 allies in it depending on which mission you're on).

    I also know we're not going to get a response from the devs on "X number of allies is okay; Y allies is the threshold for the XP/Reward Crash" but I'll be watching the forums to see what the numbers start looking like.

    Mission Architect

    Rewards in Mission Architect missions that contain more than one allied critters will give progressively lower rewards for each additional allied critter in the mission.
    Okay, I know this is totally an exploit nerf from the speed runs, but here's my question:

    What counts as an "allied critter"? Is it an "Ally" Detail? Does it include any group set to "ally" (patrols, ambushes, battles, etc)?

    The former stinks, particularly for those of us who design Story-related arcs where several Allies are made available to assist MA Story Solo'ers who might not be able to take on EBs or AVs that are placed in the mishes (Such as the very excellent "Teen Phalanx Forever" arc, which has 3-4 allies per mish). Since soloing makes up the majority of story-based AE activity, this is going to make the present missions unattractive, and designing future missions aggravating.

    The latter, if true, is just freaking stupid.

    *ahem*

    DOOM.
  10. Stephanie Meyers!! *sparkles!!* . . . *snerk* Oh god I can't even post it seriously...

    Okay +1 For:
    * Jerry Holkins (Penny Arcade): particularly if they can use the MAGA to advance their "Automata" storyline
    * Elliot S! Maggin: Classic comic book writer, gets a lot less credit than deserved.
    * Wil Wheaton: I don't know how much actual writing he does, but this could be good.
    * Gail Simone/Robert Rodi/Kurt Busiek: Wow. Yeah, that would be good too.
    * Jello Biafra: I totally can't imagine what he'd put in. Actually he'd probably just tell us all to unplug and be more active RL. Same with Henry Rollins
    * Me: Obviously.

    Other Suggestions working in Comics:
    * Terry Moore (Strangers in Paradise): Very character-centered writer.
    * Brian K. Vaughan (Runaways, Y the Last Man): Again, character-centered writer, great plotting
    * Ed Brubaker (Criminal, Gotham Central): Really, really great plotting. Would be awesome for a gritty, street-level story arc on blue or (more likely) redside.

    Outside of Comics:
    * Andrew Vachss
    * China Mieville
    * Caitlin R. Kiernan
    * Jeff VanderMeer

    But! I must DEMAND that the next MAGA be none other than:

    Malachai Nicolle (Age 6)
  11. On the issue of Procs, I also threw in the Lady Grey Chance for negative damage proc into pistols. With the acc bonus, quick recharge, and low end on Pistols, I figured that I could blow 2 slots on mule-ing procs
  12. Gratz on the 50! I'm glad to hear we were helpful.
  13. Wow Thanks, I didn't remember to check until just now!
  14. So far I'm leading toward Bullet Rain > Empty Clips, but I believe it is just going to be one of those debatable issues in the powerset.

    The extra range and AOE area of BR is what tips me toward it over EC. If you're looking for one over the other (and you certainly could take both), I was trying to make room in a busy build.

    threadjack/
    If Fury didn't have rep disabled, I would have +1'd him for the comment. I'm quite fatigued of the "Duel" pistols error.

  16. Leaks from closed beta state that CoSk will feature two new Epic ATs: Winsome Elderly Relative and Burdensome Significant Other.
  17. Truly, truly, Doc Aeon is my favorite dev. Can't wait to get my hands on these.
  18. Well I'll start off by stating that I'm a little surprised that you didn't slot your heal at all.

    Actually, I can't exactly figure out what your emphasis is here. Can you tell us more about what you plan to use the toon for? PVE/PVP? Solo/Team? Right now I see that you've picked up some leadership powers but neglected to take other powers that would benefit a team.

    Also, Lingering Rad is one of /RAD's bread-and-butter powers. While you can put it off a little while (in lieu of stamina or other maybe putting together a solid attack chain), I wouldn't wait longer than the mid-20s.

    Give us a little more info to base an opinion on.
  19. Riiight, so since few people are actually talking about /rad...

    I enjoy /rad. I'm on my second /rad corr, who is the DP/rad. Things going for it:

    1. Two arguably skippable powers (Fallout and Choking cloud), three if you don't like EMP, or even FOUR if you don't want a rez with Mutation. This can loosen up your build considerably. Me, I like EMP and a Rez (since I team a fair amount), so don't necessarily count those out.

    2. Debuffs will really help with DP/ 's oft-lamented less-than-UBER damage. Enervating Field will help drop resistance to your commonly-resisted lethal damage, while helping the other 30% on your secondary damage. Radiation Infection will work well with DP's innate -def as well has provide some survivability with some -toHit. Unfortunately these are both AOE aggro fields, so don't think you're invulnerable.

    3. Radiation Infection + AOEs = Glee. Mobs can run all they want, they'll just die tired. I believe RI hits the slow cap pretty quick, though, so I'm not sure how it will stack with cryo rounds.

    4. PBAOE self-heal at level 1. Not a huge healburst like in /kin, but you can stand back and pop mobs at distance and heal yourself.

    /rad is less fast-and-furious than /kin but it is also a lot more fire-and-forget. If that meshes with how you're looking to run a DP/ Corr, try it out.

    Best one I've seen is Grammaton Rabbi (only saw it on a /search of toons, never saw the toon) - but that's cause I like the idea of a pistol packin' hasidic powerhouse.

    Virtue has had a GunKatta for a while (I think they were a thugs/ MM, though). I rolled a GunCata (rad/rp def) catgirl on test but didn't carry her over to live.

    My present DP work-in-progress is named "The Gunsel".
  21. Hey folks. Exactly What It Says on the Tin.

    I've checked the defender board, and the i12 guide link is broken and the next one down is a PVP build from i8 (8 freaking issues ago) - which isn't going to help me with any PVE, soloing, emphasis on a Corr's role/strengths.

    Anyway, any help out there on this? I like the powerset, but now I'm getting into the 20s and don't feel like blindly stabbing around on my powers.

  22. Heroes: HEY! Some Help Over Here?!!
    Infernal: Zombies, huh? Not demons? Sorry, not my specialty.
    Numina: Umm.. Technically, I'm also undead. It's...uh.. conflict of interest...

  23. Played it just before XXP weekend. Great arc, although a lil' rough with the CoT presence, but the story is wonderful and it does make you feel like a Big Damn Hero at the end.

    PW's needed a DC pretty much since they started writing arcs, so this is well deserved. I highly recommend any of hir arcs.
  24. Someone needs to update Paragonwiki's Easter Egg page.
  25. Sorry Arb Kim, I completely don't remember what I was doing at the time - other than trying to grind out some XP. I think I was zoning, but I don't remember if it was between zones or inbetween mish/zone.

    I've never gotten this message before in a crash (where it told me explicitly to post to the boards and to cut/paste data), so I just assumed it would make sense to you. I know I was able to reload the client without any problems pretty much immediately.
