Quote:There is also the fact that they are in a zombie apocalypse so the chances of accidentally hitting a person during a hunt is astronomical. The hunter knew where all the people in his group were and thought it very unlikely that he would encounter another person that day.I don't happen to know the exact statistics on how many people are accidentally shot while hunting, but I'm willing to bet it still happens at least a few times a year even in 2011.
I'll grant that the exact situation presented in this show of Carl standing directly behind the deer and getting hit that way was a bit far fetched. But ironically I can apply some personal experience to this based on my Paintball outings. There have been times where I've aimed at one person a long distance away and "accidentally" hit people behind them that I didn't even know was there because of the distance and cover involved.
Again I'll grant this was a one-in-a-million chance, but I can envision how it could have happened even to an experienced hunter which we must assume Otis is. -

Quote:Never said it was a bad idea, but there are easier ways to hide your identity than crafting a costume. IMO, wearing a costume is worse than going around in nondescript clothes and helping people. If I go around and defeat criminals, then all the description criminals can determine is basic characteristics. Most characteristics can be hidden with a hoodie and sunglasses. Costumes create identities and identities cause problems. There is also the problem of when a hero gets unmasked. If anyone wants to get payback on Phoenix Jones, then now they can. A nondescript hero does not have to worry about it since they could be anyone. Kind of hard to get payback on someone when there could be hundreds of people with hoodies and sunglasses fighting crime with none of them knowing who the other crimefighters are. We could create a group like Anonymous except we fight crime instead of hacking. IMO this is the "real life superheroes" of the near future instead of the current style of "real life superheroes".Yeah wearing a costume to hide your identity is silly because criminals have never been known to seek revenge on the families of people that stand up to them. They've never driven by a house or a public street and do a drive by shooting.
And video taping your actions is another silly idea because we all know that once arrested the criminal always confesses to his crimes and never, ever lies or tries to blame someone else, like pretending they were the innocent victim.
Nope criminals are all just a bunch of misunderstood cuddle-wuddle bears, and anyone using common sense tactics to stand up to them and bring them to justice is only a money grubbing fame-*****.
Having a camera crew is irresponsible because it is dangerous to take them into certain situations. A personal camera would work just as well. -
Quote:The sad thing is that this is not the worst that people are capable of. Honour killings are one such indication. It is a big thing in the news for Canada since one happened in Ontario recently. Honour killings are where a male member of the family kills a female member of the family because they brought shame to the family. Honour is more important than the welfare of your family? What kind of sick and twisted world is that?I don't have kids but that was horrifying to watch. I'm not ashamed to say I had to throw up. I can't in say anything else because the Mods would have to take action, but this is one time I'm literally shaking with rage.
There was also the case of people taking cellphone pictures of a mugging a couple of months ago.
The problem is that I can understand apathetic nature of humanity and actually prefer it over the voyeuristic nature of humanity. Taking a cellphone video of a crime in progress to give it to the cops for evidence is acceptable since not every person is brave enough to confront the criminals, but taking a cellphone video of the crime to share it with your friends makes you scum. Apathy appears to be a survival instinct. Not getting involved means you don't have to worry about someone getting payback. Although, there is no excuse to not run out to save a kid in the middle of a street. Haven't been in such a situation where I need to overcome my apathetic nature to do the right thing, but I hope I will do the right thing.
I find such discriminating against such situations to be complicated because unless you are in that situation, then you might act in the exact same way. Seems hypocritical to condemn such behaviour, then act in the exact same way when that situation occurs. I know that I will never intentionally harm another person without just cause, but I don't know how I will react when I see a crime is happening. Hopefully, I will try to do the logical thing and help as much as I can like calling the cops or do whatever the situation calls for and is within my power.
As far as these real life superheroes, it is good that they are trying to help other people, but their desire to help seems secondary when they wear a costume and have a camera crew. It is just like someone saves your life and asks for $50. It just cheapens a noble act. -
I believe it is 5 choices in total. Doesn't matter if it is Loyalist, Resistance, or both. If you only made 3 choices with no extra contacts, then you leveled too fast.

If Skywalker survived a bath in lava, then Darth Maul can survive being cut in half.

So would eating a zombie make you a zombie? You are fighting off a horde of zombies and some zombie blood gets into your throat. Classic zombie creation method is injecting the zombie virus into a victim's blood through biting. Swallowing zombie fluid would have the zombie virus go through an oral delivery system. Not all drugs can be taken orally so the zombie virus might not work orally either.

Quote:Was going to use darker examples for black, but decided against using them. There are actions in every culture that will be considered as good or evil. Although some actions are considered evil in our language, but fall under survival of the tribe. That's fine in our western society, but where do we get off going into other cultures and forcing our beliefs on people that want nothing to do with us and believe differently. Seems awfully hypocritical coming from a nation whose main tenants is peoples freedom of something I agreed not to mention. Especially when we embrace the practice of performing circumcisions.
What's good for the goose is good for the gander.
Again playing devil's advocate here just for clarification. -
Mostly correct, but the world is mostly shades of grey with some areas of black and white. Rescuing a child from a burning building is white while causing serious physical or emotional pain to a child is black.

How many people were thinking that this was an Old Spice Commercial parody?

Virtual celebrities don't have any of the problems that are caused by the celebrity lifestyle. Don't have to worry about inappropriate videos of them making it to the public unless that is the direction their career is taking. Don't get into car accidents. Don't need to be paid outrageous wages. Also, they can do things that are impossible for regular celebrities.
-
What is your opinion on virtual celebrities? Such as avatars like Ananova and characters of Vocaloid. Most popular music has no soul so does it really matter if the singers have no soul either?
My opinion is that it does not matter if a celebrity is virtual or real. As long as it brings enjoyment to the fan, then it does not matter. Also virtual celebrities don't have the problem of self-destruction that plague so many celebrities. I imagine that in 5 years, most of the celebrities will be virtual. -
Quote:It is a childish fantasy to dress up in a costume and beat up people or spray them with pepper spray. It is noble to become a firefighter or police officer to help people. If they really want to help people, then get a job in a career that can make a difference not a hobby that can get you killed and ridiculed.Another sad indictment on society where helping others is considered a childish fantasy.
But hey, look after number one right? If you do anything else then you're living in cloud cuckoo land.
This isn't about being a "super hero" or dressing up in a costume, it's about a guy witnessing a large group of people beating up a small group and saying "No, I'm not going to let this happen right in front of me." and then doing the right thing by helping his fellow man. -
Someone will get sent back in time to save the warehouse. As far as Mrs. Fredericks dying, it all depends on if she finds a replacement since her life is tied to the warehouse. If the warehouse lives, then she lives unless someone takes up her role. Also it all depends on how far back in time they go. Either they only go back in time a few hours so Jinks is dead, but everyone else is saved or they go back 40 years so the bracelet is captured before it affects the kid resulting in the last season being almost completely meaningless and saving everyone that has died.

Quote:My post was based on the world of Terra Nova where the environment is the pits. Getting a Pizza we take for granted would cost far more than any common piece of electronics. So if it costs $100 for an iPhone, then it would be more like $1000 for a pizza since real food would be harder to find. Thought I was being obvious with my Faux Pizza, but I guess not.... I don't want to explain economics and how fiat currency works. Noone places value on money itself. It's a place holder that makes life simpler by bridging the gap between value and practicality.
An iPhone is like $500
A Pizza is like $5
If we maintain valuation then the person who wants the iPhone has to give you 100 pizzas either at the time of the trade or over a period of time. If it's over a period of time there may be disputes over how many pizzas have already been given or remain with no evidence either way. On the other hand if you take 100 pizzas you will have to give them away, resell them, or let them go to waste.
Both bartering results end up with waste and aggravation that wastes energy and time.
With money I can sell 100 pizzas and then buy the iPhone off of you. You can then buy a pizza off me or someone else and still have $495 left to spend elsewhere. -
What a ripoff. A pizza with real meat and cheese costs far more than a lousy iPhone. Faux Pizza just doesn't have the same taste as a piece of pizza.

The question is are humans gallifreyans or are gallifreyans human? In other words, did a colony of gallifreyans devolve into humans on Earth or did a group of humans escape into the past to save their society from some disaster like the end of time.
-
And Skynet is one step closer to destroying humanity. Just need an AI bent on the destruction of humanity.

Bridge to Teribithia. Thought it had a similar story to Narnia where some kids enter a fantasy world, but it was just a bunch of kids imagining their own world. Still a good movie, but my expectations of the movie were messed up because of it.

Quote:That is based under the assumption that alien races use this technology and have the desire to communicate with others. There might be different stages of technology and each civilization progresses to the next one after they discover it. So the amount of time that an alien race uses a specific technology is limited to maybe a few hundred years at the most for primitive technologies like radio and neutrino.Still, SETI could use this to try improving it's listening tech, as I always doubted that aliens were chatting with each other with HAMs.
Of course, there is always the possibility that we are constantly being monitored and when we reach interstellar communication, then aliens will contact us. -
If true, then it opens up the possibility of realtime interplanetary and maybe even realtime interstellar communications. Although, there is no use for the technology at the moment if we don't have people on other planets or aliens communicating directly with us. It looks like such communication would be similar to laser communication so unless a beam of accelerated neutrinos is directed towards us, then no communication can occur.

I assume that her reward to Rory was not appropriate to air on a show like Doctor Who.

Quote:Completely evil. That would reduce superheroism to reality television. Although, my opinion might be slightly biased since I think all reality television should be burned to the ground. The way to make a group or Real World Superheroes would be with tights.
The point of superheroes is to inspire and transform society to emulate their efforts on a smaller scale...to make people better.
So here is a thought:
Instead of employing secrecy as in the OP, you go totally public.
You find and train Alpha Team, a group of idealistic, dedicated veterans with a sense of theatre (probably recruited from the ranks of professional wrestlers and sport fighters). You give them colorful code names, bullet resistant costumes, neat gadgets, and a published code of conduct.
Practicality is a secondary concern: they aren't assassins or soldiers (although they may have specialized gear for special missions); they are icons. The lack of truly 'super' gear will help keep you from being targeted by world powers, since it' s stuff they all have anyway, just packaged in colorful (and often deceptive) forms. Wrist blasters that are basically guns with laser sights, helmets with incorporated night vision goggles/cell phones/SCUBA, cool vehicles, that sort of thing.
You monitor and direct them from an island base.
You see to it that they operate "just inside the law" (gross violations of the code are cause for summary expulsion and they agreed to transponder implants when they signed up). Their primary objective is public relations: cleanup in the wake of disasters, promoting charities, etc but they also investigate crime as citizens (or deputies where applicable).
Fighting crime is simplicity itself (although dangerous); you find out a certain residence is likely a crack house? Walk in, camera crews and all. If the residents open fire before you can so much as get inside, all the better; police are called and the situation is dealt with. They lie in ambush? It's all on Livestream and anything you do is self-defense. They lock up and won't appear on camera? Time to sweep the area for building code violations or squalid living conditions and get the local slumlord/city official on helmet-cam.
Everything is played for drama and bigger than life: tears are shed, heroes rise high and fall hard. Each spends a lot of time on camera, filmed by your crews and livestreamed to the Internet. Merchandise is produced and sold, although sponsorships and bribery are very publicly disdained. Mistakes and accidents are explored in detail, as are successes and milestones.
You build an Academy. Subsequent teams are fans that are recruited and trained, for a price (but scholarships are possible). Anyone can become a superhero, but only an elect few do. More selective than the marines, more selective than the Green Berets. This process is also public, with the reason for every washout given (though even the failures are directed at a career in show business or public service).
The main thing here is to promote the values (and stick to the values) that you beleive heroes should represent. Stay on message above all else. Do not compromise those values, whatever they may be. Whether they love or hate you, the world should understand you. Publish books on the subject.
Anyone who comes after you will be doing so on camera. This will encourage some (some gangs, terrorists and politicians) while discouraging many others.
Thoughts?
Although, I see this as the only way it would work in the modern world. -
I figure that Bill and Eric did not know what to do with Nan until she threatened Sookie. I was expecting the season to end with the Harem ending for Sookie.
