the reorganization of the brain in response to trauma is a baffling thing, but it never fails to 'wow'.

    http://www.newscientist.com/article/...s-doctors.html

a variety of other examples exist as well, but if the brain had been using alternative architecture to maintain usual doings, then it's possible that 'restoring' the brain stem via the infection may also animate certain other attributes not necessarily expected there.

the placement and (near) colocation of the cerebellum and it's links to emotional response may also have a part......in this fictional situation that really doesn't need quite this level of deatil so i'll be going now.....

  2. eviscerate gets a fair amount of bad press with it's long execution and animation, but it really is a great attack with a higher crit chance over the rest that translates well. if i didn't like the purple fire proc in spin so much, it would definitely go into eviscerate.

as a personal aside on focus, i like gaussians chance to, but i enjoy the decimation more with a set of 5 apocs including the negative energy proc in focus. iirc, an approx time to b/u with gauss was 3.5 min, regardless of whether you had an active attack running or not, you were just a likely to build up in the auction house while perusing inventory as you were to b/u during a fight. with decimation, it will only go when you are in an attack mode, and the likelyhood of a b/u outside of combat was much smaller with 'last hits' stemming from focus, but entirely unavoidable.

the alternation between fu/focus/slash [w/ -resist proc] and fu/focus/evis makes for some good numbers, if not the end all be all of claw chains.

i also enjoy it for an opening hit on mobs when in a team. if no tank, then mark target approx center of the mobs, combat jump over [kite] the mob to land on the other side with evisc queued, and catch a nice group that is now entirely focused on you, in the opposite direction the team is coming from without scattering them.

    although, even with a tank.....
  3. while still in the single digits, this movie was a helluva lot of fun at the theatre, and the music is as 'epic' as it gets:

without further ado, here's a review and several video clips including a good look at a space battle, and the gamillon ships. aicn has done a great job of bringing bits like this together.

And I think it's really great that you go out of your way to help people. I hope it's something you continue to do in the future.

But bear with me on this train of thought, if you have no problem giving away hundreds of millions in influence to help out friends and strangers, it stands to reason that you'd also have more than enough influence to simply buy new enhancements rather than use respecs to pull them off of a build.

(and again I really like Claws idea for a way to let us pull enhancements off a build without using a respec)
i certainly see your point, but timelines need to be considered as well. one doesn't tend to purchase their lifetime's supply of toilet paper all at once, nor do they tend to have the funds generated all at once to make such a purchase. even if it would keep that long (and you had as place to store it) would you be able to fork out 10k in one shot for t.p.? would you expect your employer to front you a lifetime's worth of paychecks? the same goes for multiple characters and io's. someone, somewhere had to run content to generate the influence to purchase it. influence generation has been suggested at anywhere from 2-15m inf per hour making an lotg +rech worth approx 8-60 hours, as opposed to 100-120m inf (leaving aside the rng and merit randoms/purchases, or general drops). if merit currency were solely used, then approx 6 tf's of varying flavours, with the built in diversity mechanic, likely across several days or weeks depending on one's availability (tf purchasing power may be off some off the top of my head), for 1 high end io.

please don't get me wrong, there are a variety of paths, and i'm not trying to play a woebegotten part here. it was simply a consideration of time over influence. unfortunately, this does tend to pander to the rmt side of things if patience is low and desire is high (note: i have never or will ever use such a service).

Sarcasm aside, we have no idea how many seed ships the ancients sent out ahead of Destiny. Common sense says it would be more than a few just to make sure enough survived (barring unforseen mishaps) to complete the journey. It's very unlikely that there are several that close to Destiny to be sumoned remotely or even in time to be of any assistance. Then again with the poor writing of the show anything is possible.
it was just hyperbole. one of my favourite quotes on space comes from the final episode of voyager; janeway: Harry. And people are always saying that space is so big.

the destiny has travelled 'billions' of light years behind a bowshock cloud of seed ships, if the project was a huge deal for several generations of ancients then perhaps a few hundred years were put into the construction and launch phase. if the closest galaxy to the milky way, is andromeda (without being a satellite dwarf galaxy) at 2.5m light years distance. the map shown in the first episode suggested a significant width range containing multiple galaxies. it would seem that just maybe, there would need to be a large number of seed ships.

yes, perhaps poor imaginations, or budget considerations on the part of the writers. another consideration would be sg1 canon in the ori/ancient split, was this before or after? was destiny sent from there?

i knew about her h.i.v., the way the descriptions were worded simply made it seem to me that this 'new thing' had happened to eli, not his mother. the last we'd seen his mother was a neat jaunt onto destiny itself, and her taking the medication.

    Chuck on Hiatus!

i was thinking about the chuck pilot the other day, i may load season 1 onto my ipod touch and check them out while commuting. definitely a current favourite but i do miss anna some, and morgan's new beau in casey's daughter hasn't been around much to fill the void.

i'm certainly glad that chuck managed to get a 3rd/4th season, hopefully they can keep it up.
  10. it would have been cheaper to web cam guantanamo and broadcast it.

it's an interesting direction that a number of the 'reality' shows seem to focus on, 'pushing the limits' is another way of saying 'torture' but with a waiver, and a chance at a payoff.

stephen king's 'running man' (the actual story as opposed to ahnold's rendition), and the 'treadmill for bucks' really come to mind.

i find it interesting you went with extremely negative connotations there. another choice might have been 'practical'. another might have been thrifty, another might have been budget conscious, another might have been economical.

...and considering i've given away more influence over the years to absolute newbs and friends i'll step around the scrooge monocle as well.

(Particularly with a bug that, when you delete certain temp powers, causes the first slot in the tray to be deleted instead of the slot clicked. Hint, hint, hint, devs)
i just recently went through a respec issue, and actually posted a thread on it as well looking for individual strategies that might be useful to them to minimize loss via the fewest respecs possible.

it seemed like i was asking if i can breathe gasoline and drink bleach while singing if i only had a brain .

one of my early mains that had been shelved for quite a while (say, i11-12 for the most part, created in i4) and was loaded with a mixed bag of hami o's and io's. look up the cost of a membrane, right now it's somewhere in the neighborhood of 200m each. multiply that by 10, then add a variety of other io's and we get to a point of marginally ridiculous to simply trash a billion inf .

would you simply trash a billion? or leave it up to wolfe to give you a 'fair deal' on anything other than a single origin enhancement?

i'm sure to some it's not a big deal at all. nethergoat for instance could probably crap the inf i'd need while brushing his pointed teeth and rinsing with the tears of many a cynical buyer. any fun i had with the market was a long time ago, and now i find the auction house a chore to be generally avoided.

in the end, i used 2 respecs to pull the top 20. so far, the cytos, membranes, and io's removed have grossed about 1.1-1.2b inf, and there are still some left.

it's not fitness, and it's not min maxing per se, it's basically having to redo the character from a nearish scratch perspective and not wanting to have to farm for the next 6 months.

    3) I'm betting Chloe Monster isn't going to do something that endangers herself.

So did she summon some more seed ships? Going to guess a half a dozen set to ramming speed will make short work of the control ship. Or did she took control of the seed ship the turtle aliens have and use that to ram the control ship.
given the expanse involved even within the path, for them to have come across one seed ship inside a year of being aboard seems remarkable. if several suddenly show within a few hours of her signal i'd have to wonder how many seed ships were sent and what small galaxy they converted to make them.

i like that they are addressing eli's situation a bit, although every preview i've read mentions a condition and 'oh no, my mom' in such a way that made it seem like a stroke, space herpes, or something other than grief.

i think they need a few of those pods. if absolutely nothing else it's an interesting place to put chloe aside while keeping her close, and tell them what might be happening in her head.

Lasers travel at the speed of light, true, they are "light" after all.

However the person firing the laser, still has to wield the gun accurately and fire it quickly.

If you can move fast enough to throw off their accuracy or avoid their aim, you can dodge lasers.

Batman is fast enough and agile enough that he would have no trouble dodging things being shot at him since he is usually much faster than the people shooting at him.
this is why flechettes should be in every capable villains' arsenal.

If you want to make sure you have the slots where they need to be, use Mids (or just write them down) so you have enough in the proper place.
i think you missed the point there bill, it's not about slots. the idea is remove entire sets without losing millions, while flipping over into an entirely different direction. some will stay approximately where they are, others not so much.

for instance: powers 1-6 with 6 slots each and 6 sets of 5 or more io's is 30 enhancements. far more than can be carried out from wolfe in a tray of 10. it would suggest 3 respecs if i wanted to not trash millions in influence gathered over a long period.

i can't be the only one with this issue wondering about the best way to make it work without losing multiple banked respecs/vetspecs/bought specs.

perhaps it's time for a review of the respec mechanic as trashing/cashing a s.o. enhancement is a far cry from trashing/cashing a crafted io?

    I Demand...

    /that is all.
  20. i think morality and ethics are simply examples of complex living arrangements that 'suggest' a set of actions unlikely to be engaged in by either party when the reverse has the opportunity to be played out.

for instance, the 10 commandments boil down to just 1: thou shalt not steal; whether it be a life, a wife, a widget, a truth, praise, a name, or power. these form a basic moral compass that allows for more complex communal relationships that extend beyond those of immediate family. (fyi, i am not a religious person per se, if anything i lean towards a more buddhist foundation that grows in a slightly different direction.)

if, in my daily doings, i happen to come across a mugging, what is the most likely state of occurrence? a predetermined target has been identified, found to be a position of weakness compared to the state of the mugger, and directly targeted in such a way that the predator is likely to get away long before retribution arrives. violence or the threat of it is most commonly used as a motivator. so, let's change it up a bit. the mugger is getting away down an alley with purse/wallet and is himself surprised by spiderman.

would he have made the same decision to mug the target had he been aware of the consequence?

i would suggest that approaching an artificial intelligence would be very similar, while at the same time realizing that communicating with an a.i. complete with self awareness would be unlike anything we have done before. simply identifying an a.i. would be an interesting feat considering our usual suggestion of species taxonomy.

so, given all the rest of it, it would be reasonable to leave it be until such time as it threatened 'us' with something immoral. the rather wide berth the word tends to give when spoken by politicians, or 'save the children' types, we can probably expect that not only would the first a.i. not be identified properly, it's probably already been killed several times while in utero already.

hopefully it doesn't hold it against us.
  21. hey all,

with i19 staring us down (potentially tomorrow if server maint is any indication) i'm wondering about different strategies for respec'ing people have used to both rebuild, and save as many high value (or pain in the a$$ to get) io's, when engaged in a complete overhaul.

i have a few ideas, but all of my toons have been done in a more piecemeal fashion (slots in the right place, but placeholder io's until slotted appropriately) and i have yet to completely disassemble a high value build and recycle 'everything' since i9. this does suggest something of a hole in respec'ing as it has not changed since... [i2?i3? certainly not after i4].

appreciate all the ideas you may have.
