except Prometheus spells it out that the coming storm is tied to the incarnates. perhaps the knowledge deficit is not on her end of this equation.

Quote:intersting analogy with the aliens and rikti because, since rikti are not actually space aliens but actually humans from another dimension, thus inappropriate for the role of an antagonist for a space faring or alien character. the tsoo, while cool, dont fit a lot of back-stories of heroes from different asian backgrounds. also, we have at least 2 more alien groups in the game, kheldians and battalion, im not seeing a huge disconnect there, nor even how one could happen. In popular comics, maybe.
In City of Heroes? None.
The only oriental group are the Tsoo, who we've already established are Hmong Tsoo, and thus not Japanese.
To suddenly add this is in would be like adding in little green aliens from Mars, when we alread have the Rikti running around. It's a huge disconnect, and also has no links to anything in game so far.
Frankly, theres so much canon un-explored and unrefined that time should be spent on expanding that, not going off on a random, unrelated tangent.
I also disagree that you need to either exclusively detail an existing group or add a new group, one could easily introduce this faction either through oroboros and link them to the coming storm, incarnates, or another historical nictus to flesh out existing stories, or they could add them as an antagonist to the tsoo in the modern setting to give us a more fleshed out story for the tsoo and perhaps justify them being active at higher levels, as they have to add new forces, both human and supernatural, to deal with the encroaching influence of these new guys.
While the tsoo may be an Asian group, i think you understand that there is a great deal more that could be done with the legendary creatures and characters from such a large and culturally diverse area than is currently being done with a medium level group with no larger story implications, tfs or themed zones. -
id buy it in a second. i can think of at least 3 concepts off the top of my head for characters.

given the popularity both of manga featuring feudal japan and western comics that pop to this time period often, i'll thank you not to try and tell me what is super. this idea, in whatever shape it takes, has more than enough precedent in popular comics to justify it, and we can do without people trying to kick out comic genres that they think, and i use that term loosely, aren't "super" enough.

ok, cool, thanks, just was makin sure my usual sweep of sources hadnt failed me.Quote:i hear ya, if we could pick up and weaponize items, or do moves like vine lash from them or the room crossing moves from the first competition..our engine cant do those, i SO wish it could. As a martial arts nerd, i wish we could do a rear choke out mez or a akido wrist take-down throw or a hop-in side kick.
Wish there were a way to take the great in that game and the great in this one, and merge 'em. As for that other game that starts with the third letter in the alphabet, I have no idea if its ftp or not. I simply could not log out of that one fast enough the one time I tried it, and never had an urge to go back.
oh and i did like the outdoors there, i played in the beta, the martial arts animations were even pretty good, but lack of costume options and pvp focus killed my desire to try to take on a third superhero themed mmo. so about praetoria/incarnates
kidding, i love ae, it needs to stay, it attracts a creative type of player that strengthens the community. wish i had the time to finally make the arcs i have written out. -
Quote:she seemed to be discussing the other competitors. that game has been ftp for a while (i have been playing it since launch) her comment about the "distinguished competition" seemed to indicate the other guys initials, also the comments about how good the outside environs are and that it "Was about to go" ftp as opposed to having gone ftp months ago, all seemed to be about our direct competition online. i apologize if in error(but the outdoors are good on there, really?)

Quote:yes, im heading out, but this was one of my ideas for how to do this. i figured it would be more super strengthy, figured the deep knee bend from marauder's intro would smash down, make a radiating smash lines to look like a shallow crater. and cause a pbaoe, like lr and shield charge. was thinking of a ma/kin melee variation where you do the knee smash but slam your palms out in both directions, sending out force like waves in both directions. we could brainstorm more for weapons and claws, but dinner awaitsA PBAoE where your character leaps off the top of the screen* and then comes crashing back down, shattering the pavement and everyone around him/her would be pretty awesome.
*I have no idea how this would look to an outsider. There's the Ninja Leap costume change emote though, so something of the sort exists.
ok, back. well, the one thing i had previously been concerned about was that there were a number of melee types, so making specific looking melee powers would leave some in a thematic lurch. katanas are weilded in a different manner than axes or broadswords, and claws are even more distinct. my guess is to retain some "look" with existing melee powers, id say we need a smashy one for super strength, a more martial arts one for km and ma, a power swinging one for maces, axes and broadsword, a more finesse looking one for katana and dual blades, a claw flurry and spine burst one. not sure how id go about the elemental versions, maybe just let the super strength one have some sort of elemental aura you could select. -
ok ok, yadda yadda, what was the going free to play thing you mentioned, inquiring mind here. can i get a link? no news is turning up for me.

Quote:possible, the only thing we got as feedback was this now wether he means the fn reception was great or the financial reception was great, dunno. i know i hevent used many of the beast parts myself, the set was more mammal centric for my guys, but since i asked for it, i supported it. figured unless it sold, a future reptile/fish pack was totally off the book for me. i have assuredly used parts from it though, and beast run in full dragon form looks cool.I get the opposite feeling re the beast pack; I see very few people using it. Also, this is the only pack where they stuck NPCs wearing the pieces in Pocket D, as if to say "Look....!"
I'm on Guardian and we have a well-known Tank on the server who has Tiger heads [his toon looks very nice too]. He is the only one I can remember seeing regularly wearing pieces from this pack! Sad. Also play on Virtue and dont see it much over there, even.
This pack is the only one I never bought. I even bought the Party Pack when it was on sale once, because my female alts wanted the dance emotes.
that said, I am enjoying the Steampunk pack a lot and am looking forward to whatever we get next. -
Quote:it is? i didn't not find any info on this, please pm me your source on this. free might be worth another look. im assuming you mean our direct competition online, not our competitor online. How would I feel if one in ten mishes were unplayable? I'd feel about like I do about the Distinguished Competition's game, which is eye-blindingly beautiful yet kept throwing up mishes that I found impossible to complete!
Since that game is about to go free-to-play, I am guessing a lot of people felt the same way about it. Sorry to derail the thread, back to more fussing about the Mission Architect. -
belts
and, for mine, i didnt make steampunk characters yet per se, but the introduction of a proper corset and dress helped other concepts, soo
heres seraph blue's angelic armor look
heres violet tendencies "elegant lady" look, love the victorian choker, by the way
and finally, my favorite trans dimensional steampunk alcoholic pirate borderline copyright violation, alerunner abney. starting a trend of pantslessness that probably defines him pretty well.heres an older shot of him too, when it was a more bodged together look

just to bump this up a bit, one thing that was ticking in my head today at work is that im not sure we need so many new powersets as we need new power customization options, both in the pools and the existing mains, and a few more epics. as it stands, a new powerset is largely a mechanical thing, whereas what johnny has described is something that could be accomplished mostly with existing powers with more thematic re-skins. i am, and will continue to be, an enthusiastic supporter of more animations, customization options, and finally getting to epics, pools and the like. i think that would address more players needs with less extraneous balance issues than futzing around making cantaloupe blast and snowshoe melee because jack kirby dropped acid one day.
i often mention wanting a control set that uses the labels and paper dolls of a Japanese onmyoji. rather than making a thematically limited new control set, make new animations for gravity or some mechanically Germane set and just let me sub in the animations to look like im tossing the Japanese magic stuff. other stuff too like wands/staffs for blasts to make a wizard, or elemental ray guns, or heck, a guitar for sonic blast. you could make a new set and have it become an outlier, or just use the mechanics we have and let us alter the existing sets in such a way to give us thematic breadth. -
you know, they have yet to say how a pack did or didnt do. I often wondered about the beast pack, since i was one of the big yellers for it, and if it flopped, id secretly suspect david was laughing at me and drawing uneditable mustaches on my characters. I suspect it did well, i think there are a hardcore clot of cosutme nuts like myslef that will dutifully shell out every time there are costume things in the pack, and this one was really really good, so id suspect it did well with the usual suspects...once they could log into their accounts, grumble grumble.

Quote:I think the biggest problem is they tried to think out of the box.. yeah we have known baddies like the chinese triads and jaapnese yakuza, lets use a little known post vietnam ethnicity with ambiguous modern borders and no specific major films showing its unique culture. i honestly had never heard of the hmong before coh, and with my martial arts nerdism, i thought i knew about a lot of specific obscure ethnic traditions. Mongolia at least was a world dominator once, the hmong, basically all i could find is that they helped us in Vietnam, and there was some violence involving a hunting incident in michigan. and they settled prominently in austrailia and america post the vietnam war and attendant skirmishes.I think is identifying a much, much more prominent design problem if people can't even get this right
Its cool to support something different, and i learned about something i never knew about, but it cuts down cultural touchstones. i know japanese on sight, i can usually identify chinese archetechture and weapons, korea has been a little less active in promoting their history abroad, though their martial arts are pretty ubiquitous, im even pretty good at thailand right now, thanks to tony jaa and company. hmong, im at a loss. -
ok, i despise the security verification things, i got a new computer so now they made me jump through hoops. that sound/visual thing is garbage and now im locked out. do not remember this much trouble with the beast pack. i am currently fifth in the @#$%ing queue.
ok, fixed, nate is the man, still hate those visual things though. -

on another forum, a poster described a calvin and hobbes finale strip(this was around the time the strip ended) he had drawn up(he was a bit of an artist, never posted it though) where a harried 30 year old calvin comes home from work, stressedly looks at the bills on the table and all his responsibilities and then looks with resigned sadness at the old stuffed hobbes doll ona shelf as he keeps waiting to see it talk or move again. that bummed me out for nearly a week.

well, we are trying to help, generally we are trying to get things to work within the existing city before going for oroboros stuff that would require a huge amount of new artwork and would spread the population out further, plus some people get a bit annoyed that we enter the distant past and find that machine guns and giant robots seem not particularly stronger than a group of roman legionnaires. I mean, your ideas are neat, but you added a full new powerset with animations, a new zone, whole new enemy groups, i love it but you are seriously asking for a pony here
im just trying to give all possible options, because i really want it to happen.
and tec, yeah sounds good, maybe opium den might push the ratings a bit, mentioning real drugs gets sketchy, but if they could work around that, then signed to jupiter. Maybe we could work in the yakuza finally, so that we dont force culturally inappropriate designs down their tsoo's throat. -
japanese steampunk? ok, get me sakura wars on the phone
the game has a new booster and a major villain who used to pop up in every storyline that is steampunk, last time you saw the tsoo do anything? -
I dont see it really. both new power-sets and , as we are calling it here "conceptual proliferation" will likely continue. probably more conceptual proliferation just because it would use existing animations and tested effects. i guess the biggest problem with new powers is this. there are 8 damage types in the game. and there are only so many stat effects. can you make something that is distinct and is not directly comparable to another power but inferior or overpowered? I'm sure they can, but i guess thats my big conceptual chopping block, a lot of cool concepts are just too narrow or would be too much like existing ones. another thing is wondering if there are powersets that are too thematically tied to one orogin. people complained that demons were too magic, i can see totemic having the same complaints, and power armor being too tech.Quote:being big doesnt mean you have unlimited resources and time. bethesda is a huge company, and they still cut polearms from oblivion (i went ballistic). heck, the big gorilla only has added one new class since their game launched, and they have more income than some countries. size and resources do increase capacity, but practicality don't just vanish if you toss a wad of 100s at it.
Powersets being as work- and cost-intensive as they are, they seem like the first thing to get cut. It's somewhat ironic that even now with the supposedly much larger development team and budget, we're back to looking for least-cost suggestions like we were back when there were only 15 people on the team working on a shoestring budget. -
Quote:actually i'm an idiot and meant to say indep port. I know that in some situations large communities that immigrated to new countries formed small pockets of areas that were similar to their homeland close to where new immigrants would show up, an established community that sprang up back when boats were the preferred mode of mass travel would indicate a port town. plus, ip is, stf and giant monster notwithstanding, kinda dead compared to talos, figured id give it some character.Technically speaking... Isnt a hmong-town supposed to be in Skyway? There is a contact there, Kong Bao, who is supposed to be a big man in the Hmong community...Plus Thao Ku, another notable Hmong, is also located there and Cho Ge an ex Tsoo reformed gangsta is there... Granted I dont recall any Tsoo in Skyway, but thats probably due to the bass akwards design of the original game.

Quote:no question that he current setup is prohibitive, but as of the ustream chat a few weeks ago, they know we want a solo option that is a bit more viable, they, in the past have implemented things they knew that the community wanted, but it takes time. Right now they are going for a traditional raiding endgame and need to fill it a bit fuller than just 2 trials over and over, once that is added to a point that it is satisfactory, I would be very surprised if they did not also have some form of slower solo advancement as well. my chief warning was that trapdoor and the fun twins are also solo content, and several players had significant trouble with them.Ah I see now. There is technically a solo way to do it, but it's prohibitively long and expensive in terms of inf. I was under the impression that to unlock everything past Alpha, you absolutely had to do the trials. I just looked them up on the Wiki and see now that you can technically purchase even the unlocks with threads and inf. I say technically because from what I'm seeing of the conversion costs and time required, you'd have to be freakin' nuts to do it that way.
Yeah........that sucks.
so solo content does not mean content that is easily soloed by everyone. i shredded them with rian and violet, a scrapper and a dom, and they were significantly harder with my defenders. so brace for the content to be a bit tougher initially, much like the rials were when, in the first week they were impossible to complete, but now people with the proper experience go through them efficiently.i'm trying to head that reaction off so i don't wind up punching my computer screenforums are starting to get to me a bit.

Quote:you and i have both been here 7 years, right? are you addicted to an uhealthy degree. furthermore, despite our differences in opinion, we both generally play for the same reason, customization. games do exist to be enjoyable for a long period of time, and behavioral science can definitly enhance one's desire to continue playing a game, but to impart a sinister tone to it is alarmist. you you cosnider yourself, a 7 year vet, to be unhealthy? my love of cheese on my food notwithstanding, id say that im not, despite my being here a amount of time that would seem excessive to outside gamers and VERY attractive to game companies. sometimes doing good business is backed by good science, nothing sinister needed. there is a scientific reason i enjoy lifting weights and practicing karate too(when i finally get back to trainingOnly it isn't. The best way to make money off us is to get us addicted to an unhealthy degree. That's what the Incarnate system is designed to do, and that is what I find insulting. I'm just getting a little weary of Skinner box design games.
), both of those are healthy behaviors, and dont become more sinister because some basic physiological reinforcers keep me enjoying them.
