  1. mwave is fine for getting stuff purely for this purpose. Also, they have a will call which you pay $5 and pick the part up 2 hours later. That is very handy if you need a part NOW. Newegg is hard to beat on selection.

The prices are cheaper because in most cases your buying an inferior product that isn't up to Father Xmas' specs. If you want the best parts your going to have to build it yourself.

The Antec 300 case for example is the standard 300 case not the Illusion variant. What is the difference? Well, for $10 more the Illusion case comes with $30 of case fans pre-installed.

The memory you picked I have never heard of, they do sell the higher end Kingstons go with those. Your trying to save pennies here and getting worse parts.

64GB SSD is really small, if you are going to use an SSD, 128GB is the minimum you should consider. Also, since you don't have a large storage drive your going to full that drive really quick.

I would suggest waiting to see if Father Xmas would look over the list. Just doing a quick glance over the list I can see lots of places for improvement.

On the low end system I suggest changing the memory to.

  2. Keep in mind that Corsair and Antec are PSU resellers. They buy their PSUs from someone else and slap their label on it. There are PSU fan sites which go around and disect those things and they have good testing equipment. So its important to know who actually made it and which version you get. Like the Antec Earthwatts series. Delta and Seasonic make them but its up to the buyer to find out who makes which one.

Antec has several models of PSUs some are good some are not so good. Same with Corsair. See www.hardwaresecrets.com or www.jonnyguru.com if you are interested.

I had bad luck with Corsair PSUs, had to replace 2 before I bought an Antec 750 instead and it is still working great.

MOST IMPORTANTLY Father Xmas was kind enough to write an entire assembly process available here on the forums!!!

I highly recommend buying and building a Father Xmas system...

    please advise.
If you want to go cheap, go AMD.

If you want the machine to be a little faster and you got lots of money, go intel.

Most programs are still single threaded. So the AMD X3 is a good buy for the price. Long run, an x4 or x6 CPU would be better but "investing" in the computer world is a bad investment since electronics evolve so fast.

What died on your machine anyways?

I would say the HD 5770 is the minimum (they also offer the HD 5670) if you want to scope out the Ultramode settings.

Memory is fine. But do you really need Blu-ray (understandable option if you tend to watch movies on your PC)?
I played CoH with a 5670. Under normal graphics it handles it no problem. Ultra mode forget it. You have to scale everything down to the point it looks ugly. 5750/5770 is the minimum ATI card I would stick in the game if you intend to play the game in Ultra mode.

im in the market for a new comp as well and would like to build my own. I've read his sig and some people say the parts he's suggesting aren't combatible.
id like a rig that could handle diablo III when it releases, and of course this game with maxed setting if possible.

Never argue with "Santa" or you won't get any presents.

Yes, its quite good. I *might* change a part or two for something nicer but its good if you are not up to date with the latest hardware trends.

If you plan to spend more than $1000 then Sandy Bridge CPUs are due out and will make of a nice CPU if you go the intel route. If you plan to buy AMD buy cheap.

My advice is that new stuff comes out all the time so I prefer the "cheaply but often" vs "expensive but every 5 years"

If your machine is already 5 years old, then most likely the AMD X3 Athlon for $75 is a steal and still a nice upgrade.
  6. You could go to www.mwave.com and pay them $80 to build your custom PC. Cheap if you don't know how to build it. They don't have as good a selection as newegg but they carry most parts.

They could easily build you something close to Father Xmas' budget gaming rig. So that's maybe $800 which is alot less than a "cheap" alienware.
  7. I pretty much echo some of Jibikao's feelings about /EA brute "stalker". When my friends ask what kind of stalker to make I say make an /EA brute.

Stalkers should be the best single target AT hands down and should give a "team buff" other than dps.
  8. I'd rather have some free server transfers. Another 4 weeks is a bit long.

Oh well, an excuse to get toy collector.
  9. Personally, I love building it myself. It has never been easier.

Windows 7 is cake to install compared to XP.
  10. It seems like the 5850 cards seem to be prone to this problem although I have a 5770 and have seen the very same error.

It could be a heat related issue. Concerned over some of the video card overheating talk I went ahead and did a case swap. (don't do it unless you love to remove/install motherboards ) The other machine I was able to install 2 case fans.

Anyways, running 10.12 with no issues for the last month with both a 5770 and 6870 card.

Apparently the "stopped responding" thing is triggered when the graphics driver doesn't respond for 2 seconds or so - then Windows decides your graphics driver has crashed and restarts it, which crashes City.

I have no idea how to fix it, though, and I assume that it's just because it takes so long to load the contact list (my L50 does have a lot of contacts).

Edit: I tried turning my graphics settings down and that didn't help, but I've installed the 10.9 drivers (I have a Radeon 5850) and I've managed to log in with Contacts open without crashing. Haven't tried putting Ultra Mode back on in combination with the older drivers yet.
  11. Try turning off Anti-Aliasing.

There have been many of us with ATI cards having issues. As a fellow 5770 user the card works for the most part but I did have issues with 10.10 and 10.11 drivers. Rolled back to 10.9 which made most of the issues go away. I later changed to 10.12 and not had any issues.

Some of the card's problem could be heat related but 50C should be ok.
  12. That sounds like an oops on terms.

It was a pretty fun TF but I did end up getting killed a couple of times while most everyone else stayed alive. Then today, I just happened to read more on the Incarnate System and Alpha Slotting. Based on what paragonwiki states: "The Alpha Slot gives characters who unlock it an additional enhancement to all their powers. It also allows characters to participate in the Apex Task Force and the Tin Mage Mark II Task Force. Characters participating in these task forces without a boost slotted in their Alpha Slot have a four-level "debuff" applied that greatly diminishes their power."

Now here's the kicker. When I got that tell saying if I was Alpha Slotted, I said yes because I thought the sender meant I could get Shards if one is Alpha Slotted. I did run a TF on a toon last week and they were not Alpha Slotted so thus, no wonderful Shard drops came my way. Now back to my KM/SD Scrapper toon, I had my toon with an available Alpha Slot but not actually slotted with a boost so thus, it appears I was gimped on that Tin Mage TF based on what it says in diminishing one's power if they are not slotted. Needless to say, I did get some Shard drops on that TF which brought my total Shard count to 7. After the TF I immediately combined my Shards to give me,....well nothing yet since I only had 7 total Shards to work with. So now, I have to wonder how hard it actually might be to get enough Shards to craft something for your Alpha Slot? I pulled this info on Shards and drop rates from paragonwiki. I guess now, I really have an excuse to start playing some more of my level 50's and get the cob webs off them...heh..heh.
  13. Your system sounds nice.

your questions have been answered already.

I find for bundling of wires that nylon cable ties, velcro tape or hugo's tape do the job. I prefer nylon but nylon is a pain to remove if you have to remove things so I have been using velcro tape more.

Assembling the rig is something I really look forward to doing. If anything, time goes by too fast when I make Frankenstein awaken.

Details you might need to know:

    1. Case--Cooler Master CM 690
    2. PSU--Silverstone strider 750w (80 plus Silver)
    3. Mobo--Asus M4a88td-v evo/usb 3
    4. GPU--One GTX 460 1 gig.

Two questions regarding "cable management" (I honestly could not get "google" to answer):

    1. With one Sata cable can I run both Hard drive and Dvd burner on same line? I know IDE, you should not.

    2. On a molex cable line, can I run three 120 mm fans safely. Or should I run two molex cables total (one with one and second with two?).

Thanks in advance. And I hope everyone has a great holiday!!

No question the game's stability has been flaky since i19. i18 wasn't exactly a smooth release either.

The important thing about diagnosing issues is more info. That way if there are other people who have the same or similiar hardware that you have, then its possible to nail down the issue to a common cause.

Yes, I see the graphical "lag" spikes whenever I pull up any extra windows in the game. WW trade screen being one of the worst lag causing graphical issues I see. I doubt were alone. I see this spike on both my Nvidia and ATI cards. Currently, I don't have any stability issues.
No question, there is a problem in the game's software, the hope is we can get along until Paragon can work out these bugs.

As long as we are good about getting the dev staff hardware and bug info the sooner (hopefully!) we can all be enjoying the game to its fullest.
I'm sure they have plenty of testing systems in the Paragon labs they just need to know what we got.

I'm just trying to help the community out.

D'oh they changed the interface under 10.12 catalyst.

Your not able to enable manual fan control? You should be able to enable manual fan control under overdrive as long as AMD overdrive is enabled.

Edit: GPU temps look fine but try manual fan at 75%
  18. Certainly for 6150SE folks it works.

Any further updates on your situation Desmodos? In the case for 260.99 with GTX 260 users I don't know.

I'm currently running 260.99 with my GTX 260 with no issues. Its a single card and I am using evga precision with custom GPU fan settings. Have you tried manual GPU fan settings?

Edit: It seems GTX 295 users have some other issue. Perhaps start a thread for GTX 295 users?

The 5850 video card has been one of the more troublesome ATI cards.

Update to 10.12 video drivers and see if your video card reseller has GPU software that would allow you to adjust GPU fan settings. If there isn't software available, you can use the manual GPU fan settings under Catalyst under the overdrive section.

*I have seen many people say their video card isn't getting hot and its not the problem. However, CoH doesn't seem to be Graphics intensive enough to make the GPU fan kick in at a high setting and thus the card runs at a temp that's just hot enough to cause errors but not hot enough to kick in GPU fans at higher levels*

  22. I am trying to help people with game crashing problems. Without any info its very hard to figure things out.

There were some people having issues with 260.99 nvidia drivers with 6150SE video and needed to roll back to 197.45 but until several people said what they had we had no ideas as to where to go.

There is a post requesting that people post CoH helper and hijack this. Trust me that info does help quite a bit.

So ever since i19 went live (I think, not sure when it started to be exact; but at least for 1.5-2 weeks) I've been having some issues while playing.

When I'm on a team (usually doing a TF of some sort; teams of 8) on my Kin/Rad Defender I am usually in melee range and use FS and other AoE powers (Irradiate, etc).

I've been noticing that when I'm in a team and in melee range (doesn't have to be in melee range but it's the most obvious when I am in melee range) and people use AoE powers like FS, Lightning Rod, any sort of 'nukes' or what have you I start to see latency/spikes in frame rate dropping.

I have a brand new PC (5 months old ) and have been running on Ultra mode settings ever since I got it and was able to do hami raids and everything else no problems whatsoever.

So I looked at /netgraph 1 and a few times (sat. nights/during peek times) I might see some red spikes in it but usually nothing too bad/obvious. I do have Verizon FiOS 25/25 so usually it's not my connection.

I was looking at /showfps 1 and sure enough that would go from 40-60 fps to 1 fps (at worst where it just 'freezes' the screen and sometimes I'd die ).

So I turned down all graphics to the lowest possible (turning shadows and what not off) and still get the same thing (maybe not 100% the same because diff. TFs/people etc but... in general the same effect). So that would tell me it's not necessarily my PC either.

I've run a defrag and the NCsoft Game Advisor and sent a support ticket but....any thoughts/suggestions?

P.S. I play on the Liberty server....

Edit: Oh and I looked at /graphfps 1 and I can definitely see the 'spikes' of frame rate loss when I have the graphfps 1 up/on and tried to take pictures/screenshots of the issue(s) but it looks like the graph doesn't get taken in the picture.
  24. As mentioned, it could be lots of things.

If your getting visuals in BIOS that's a good sign. Now, two different video cards probably eliminate the video card as the issue.

It sounds like your unable to boot to windows xp install. If were looking at a hardware issue the most common failures are Power Supply, Mother Board, Video Card and Hard Drive.

Video Card and HD don't sound like the issue here. That leaves Mother Board and Power Supply. I've seen similiar symptoms like this on motherboards with bad capacitors.

I would inspect your Motherboard for bad caps. If those are checking out good. Then check your power supply. Those go bad too. Is your PSU a quality unit and who made it and what model is it?

Edit: is there a chance your using two bad video cards? I had a case where the video card was bad and the old video card to verify the video card issue was also bad.
