  1. That's a pretty old MB if its socket AM2. The CPU might be just showing signs of age.

It looks like there is too much thermal paste on there. Have you tried sticking the old one back on and seeing if you have any issues? Its possible the newer one isn't cutting the mustard.
  2. While I would prefer that all KB be changed to KD and I like the current "feature". Having the ability to toggle the setting with Null the Gull would be nice for both side of this "KB" debate.

Until its fixed, I will be playing my PB some for the first time in years....
  3. I should be arriving by car around 7-8am on Saturday

I am certainly game for Saturday breakfast and lunch. Sunday breakfast I could probably go for too. I could take a couple of people to a location but my car's backseat isn't good for tall people.

Edit: All this talk about Fred's makes me want to make sure to get one before I leave the area though. I might go there on Saturday for lunch instead. I live a mile from one of the old school In n Outs where its drive thru only so seems odd for me to drive 360+ miles to eat there.

    KB bug

Hey, with KB being reduced should we test and see how OP Peacebringers are now?

Well, in this case I am happy to dust off my Peacebringer. Oh how bugs can sometimes be good....

Now if we can get Null the Gull to toggle KB to KD.
  6. Good, maybe this will finally get me to play my Peacebringer again. Less KB is good feature.

Seriously, 2 maybe 3 feet is all anything is knocked back now. That's not enough to get most things out of melee range.

My energy blaster gets retired until that changes.
  7. Oh, maybe Dominators will be getting Animal Control!

3dfx died because they spent money like drunken sailors on lavish parties. Their solution to making a better gfx chip was more and more brute force. Their purchase of STB was more of a distraction to try and hide how badly 3dfx was failing.

There are some companies who sold their own. ATI for the longest time sold their own. Matrox sold their own cards.
  9. We told you so Surya

I've been running with a 2500K since April. I'm glad I decided that AMD hiding Bulldozer benchmarks was a good hint on how bad that chip was going to be and grabbed a 2500K.

If you want good performance with an AMD, Phenom II 955 or better. Avoid the L3 cacheless CPUs (Athlon II and Phenom II 840). Avoid Bulldozer too.

Intel Sandy Bridge CPUs are very nice if you can afford it.
  10. A few things jump out at me.

    1. Turn AA to off.
    2. Vertical Sync: off
    3. Depth of Field: off
    4. Reduce World texture to high or even lower.

Some commentary, the Athlon X2s is a fairly old CPU. Considering I had issues with graphical lag with an AMD Athlon II 630 with a 5770. I'm not surprised you are having issues with an older slower chip with higher graphical settings.

As TJ said, update windows 7 to SP1.

Why does your ECS motherboard have an ASUS bios loaded on it?

    Motherboard Manufacturer: ECS
    Motherboard Model: (empty)
    Motherboard Product: Iris
    Motherboard Version: 1.0
    BIOS Manufacturer: Phoenix Technologies, LTD
BIOS Name: Phoenix - AwardBIOS v6.00PG
    BIOS Version: _ASUS_ - 42302e31
  11. Je_saist, a few more cards to add to the list.

    AMD 6750*, 6770*, 6790
    Nvidia 550Ti, 560Ti

    *rebadged 5770/5750
  12. AMD E series processor? Um no, cheap laptop != game machine.

The E Brazos series is good for mobile use of viewing/editing excel and webrowsing.

Will it play CoH? Not at a level I would consider acceptable on minimal graphics. At best it would be good for marketeering, doorsitting in AE, and soloing.

And sorry, its not going to play ultra mode. Its going to struggle with normal mode.

You might have better luck with the A series with the quad core A8 Llano.

When I say high quality I mean a good GPU. So far you bought 2 very low end cards that are found in $329 computers from e-machines or a Frys brand PC.

XFX, ECS, Asus, MSI are resellers. Some are better than others. Some use better quality components than others.

You are correct that it if you dig hard enough you can find someone that hates X. I'm sure if you dig hard enough you can find people that like something awful too.

Heck, I bet there are people out there who think the Ford Pinto was the best car ever made and are still driving one today. I'm sure there are people that think the Cimmaron was the best Cadillac.

Did you do a clean install of the OS? It doesn't sound like you did. Both of those motherboards use nvidia 980 chipsets. (Meaning they are a couple of years old) I thought nvidia got out of the chipset business.

I generally stick to AMD chipsets only as they just work. Since your not bothering to get a quality video card, why bother with a SLI MB? Waste of money.

Both of your video cards are from resellers who have reputations of making stuff cheap. XFX stuff is cheap but generally works good enough. ECS has a worse reputation mostly because they are the branded motherboards that Frys gives away when they sell CPU + Motherboard bundles at a loss to clear inventory. Basically, you get the CPU sold at a loss and you can just dump the MB in the trash and you still got a bargain. Other people will sell the MB on fleabay for $10 + Shipping to some poor person who doesn't know better.

Edit: You did jump the gun. the 440 might be competitive with low/mid end video cards from 5 years years ago!
  15. I have been playing 4e some recently, it has its brutes and controllers but it also has its stalkers and peacebringers....

If you feel incapable of playing a game without other people, perhaps a Pen and Paper RPG would be more to your taste. I hear D&D Fourth Edition is very well balanced, but I don't have first-hand knowledge of it.
  16. Before you go running out and buying a 6850, please make sure you have enough room to fit the card. The 6850/6870 are rather long cards they might not fit in one of those pre-built $%&. Having installed a 560 in a friends HP, with barely enough room to fit I'd check first if I were you.

Sapphire cards have been pretty good to me, but they only come with a 2 year warranty, although generally speaking after 2 years or so, a new video card is probably on the list of things to look at anyways.

460/560 are shorter about 9" so keep that in mind, it will save you embarassment later.
  17. I'm not a huge fan of MSI (they tend to build things cheap) but either of hyperstrike's suggestions are a good place to start. I personally prefer EVGA with Nvidia cards but YMMV.

    A smile for you!

Joining a BAF with 18 Brutes on it.
Playing a Stalker on a TF with 7 controllers.
Playing an Eng/Eng Blaster with a Pro KB player who is running a scrapper.
Watching the Seed of Hamidon cry from being lonely.
Watching Lusca wave at people in IP.
    Lightining Rod + Shield Charge
Beating a TF in less time in minutes than its value in merits. 1min per merit is my goal.
Getting 2 merits per minute on a TF.
  19. Here is my .02 INF

    1. The no response to "Hi" doesn't bother me, the team could be on teamspeak.

    2. The leader is probably spamming tells so doesn't want to type more than necessary.

    3. If the team was doing poorly, well duh Of course the leader won't explain that to you. I mean its like expecting an honest used car salesman or politician.

    4. Its up to the player to be pro-active. Ask questions to the leader and see what the response is. If the person replies a good answer then join, if they respond "r u heAl0r?" well then, don't bother.

    5. As people have said, don't expect PUG teams to be worthwhile. I mostly join them to remind myself how amazingly superbad PUGs are. I do it mostly for comedy relief.

    6. Generally, just asking an easy question like, "We fighting the easiest stuff for the level?" will weed out most of the bad players. If they are picking missions other than council from 30-50 then you know the leader isn't any good. You could also ask what diff level the team is running at. Just being able to answer an easy question should save you from a comedy of errors.

I wanted to share something that happened to me the other night to get a different perspective on things.

I was tinkering around with my costume in Steel. And was qued that I wanted to join a missions team. (I didn't feel like making my own that night.)

Anyways, I received a /tell from someone asking me if I wanted to join a mission team. I gladly accepted. I said "Hi" to the group once I joined and didn't get any response. But everybody was in the mission. I've played long enough to know that this is usually a red flag that moral is low because the group is having trouble completing the mission and people have quit. So I go inside the mission and low and behold, the team is at the end room with 2 groups left to kill before the mission completes. And typically, once a struggling team finishes the mission, everyone disbands.

So I had helped the team finish the mission and as I predicted, the leader as well as others said that they needed a break and logged.

I had contemplated quitting even before trying to help this team based on what I thought so far, but figured that maybe the team would move on with other missions. I was wrong.

Do you feel the leader should have explained the situation when sending me a /tell?

And would you have quit the team knowing the scenario once you got inside the mission?

Or would that have been rude since I was qued that I was seaching for a missions team?

Edit* I think this bothers me some because I felt cheated a little since I devoted my play time to a team that disbanded after 15 minutes.
  20. Zomg Turg is coming!

Well I'd like to join any plans for food at least on Saturday if you don't mind a Freedom player joining in. All this talk about Fred's and In n out...

It doesn't look like I can make it on Friday

I've only found two threads regarding the summit: This one, and one that was the initial posting, with a last update around 10/15 (where this one seemingly takes over). Is there a consolidated thread or website where players are coordinating room shares and/or shuttle rides from the airport?

    My stats, for the record:
    • Arrive in SJC from DC at 1:05pm local time Friday afternoon
    • Check in at Dinah Hotel at 3pm
    • Dinner arrangements are already set, but I'm happy to hang with anyone for a lunch, beer, etc. before that time
    • Leave SJC for DC at 10:10am local time Sunday morning
I can manage a cab, but the best prices I've found thus far is around $40, which IMO seems steep for a 15 mile trip. If anyone has any recommendations for local cab or shuttle services to/from SJC, I'm happy to investigate (or share a ride with anyone who'd be arriving that time). I'm also happy to

I'm looking forward to meeting all of you, players and Paragon staff alike. Samuraiko, I think you might owe me a beer for your infection woes from earlier last month. All other bets are off!
  21. Agree with what other people have posted. Waste of time and money.
  22. Oh I want the giant nightmares back! That was so cool to see them huge things!
  23. Good, I can't wait to hear how well your machine plays after you do that upgrade to something a bit more modern and see the game at 60+
    fps

Its best not to argue with Hyperstrike, what he is says is correct. I have serveral different rigs here setup and I can see the difference between a C2D vs C2Q vs Athlon II vs Phenom II vs 2500K all with the same video card. Yes, the 2500K performance is quite impressive.

After you get your "beast" up and running I would like to hear your commentary about game performance.

As for Ivorybridge, gaming and consumer businesses do not drive Intel anymore, but the server and HPC market do. Bulldozer may have been a dud for the consumer market, but the HPC guys are salivating to get a hold of those Interlagos processors. The 22nm die of Ivorybridge will allow Intel to pack more cores with less power, which they do need to compete in the server market. I expect to see Ivorybridge by Q1 next year, maybe sooner.

The smaller die with fully implemented PCI 3.0 will finally give the CPU a little breathing room in terms of being the bottleneck for performance. Dual 16x cards will allow multi-card setups to go the way of the dodo (yay) and be replaced with cheaper and lower power GPGPUs. Alas I'm getting ahead of myself, that's probably at least a year away.

That being said, I'm building something that looks like this. I'll finally be able to play Witcher 2, yay!

    i5 2500k
    8GB 1333mhz DDR3
    2x 120GB SSD RAID 0
1TB local drive (14TB network attached storage)
    2x AMD 6950 2GB
    800wt PSU

If that doesn't do it, nothing will.
  24. I have 2 machines running 11.3 with no issues and now 1 running 11.9 with no issues.

    I'll see what je_saist reports.
  25. If you want the bells and whistles you have to get better CPU and GFX hardware.

If you want a better CPU now, don't wait for Ivy Bridge just get the best available now. Otherwise, you'll end up with the Bulldozer people who waited an extra 6 months only to find that AMD released a K9. Me? I'm glad I decided to not bother waiting and have been enjoying the 2500K all this time.

Intel isn't under any pressure to release Ivy Bridge since Bulldozer turned out to be a "dud". Oh, they will relase it, when its good and ready. (Probably when Piledriver and Trinity ES start getting passed around)
