  1. City of Heroes does benefit from a better processor. Load times and CPU framerates (at least with ATI cards) were much better with a 2500K vs Q9550 vs E6600. I used a 5750 for testing with all 3 CPUs and framerates were higher with the 2500K and the trials with lots of people (24 player BAFs for example) were lag free with the 2500K, a little lag with Q9550 and more with the E6600.

I can't speak for Nvidia users, but maybe a few of them have spare stuff to test this.

The Q6600 was a nice CPU 5 years ago and is still pretty good, but the SB intels were a nice speed bump.

    Edit.
I'm using a Radeon HD 6800 series card (I forget the exact model number).

I would suggest you start a new thread and lets get a better look at what you have.

12.1 is stable and works fine, I don't see any such "performance" drop between versions. So please post up more info so we can help track down this drop.
  3. Lets not forget that there are 3 560s.

    560
    560 Ti
    560 Ti with 448

    If you want a 560, get a 560 Ti
  4. I have to agree with local, I don't think DS will be worth taking.

    EVGA M020-00-000234 Superclock CPU Cooler

OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W Modular High Performance Power.

All connections are firm and in place. I assembled the pieces using an esd mat and wrist band so I doubt static caused a short.

When I power on the system it comes on briefly and the fans spin, then it cuts off. There seems to still be power to the MB as the lights on my sound card are still on as well as the light on the CPU cooler.

I tried removing and swapping out the RAM with no success. I even tried powering up the system with no extra peripherals attached (sound card, video card, drives) and still had the same results. I also reseated the CPU... nothing.

I also tried using another PSU I have, a Thermaltake XT 775w, same results.

I'm really at a loss as to what the issue can be so I got a RMA for the MB and CPU and will hopefully get replacements next week.

I didn't think the RAM would have been the cause so I didn't RMA that. If the issue still persists when I get the replacement I'll be totally stumped, the only other thing it could be would be the case itself, an APEVIA X-Jupiter Jr. which I've had for about 4 years now.

Any ideas out there as to what could be the issue?

    The non K 2500?

Did you try it with only 2 sticks of RAM? I've seen more than my fair share of DOA MBs but I have rarely seen CPUs that are dead.

More than likely its a bad MB.
  6. The one on the bottom uses a 256 bit bus. The others use a cheaper 192 bit bus. If you REALLY want a 460, get the 256 bit bus card.
  7. I'll be doing the red eye drive very early on Saturday, I'll just need to know where.

I wanted to make Holder's last time but I was just too tired to get up early on Sunday.

Given the time limitation for lunch on Saturday, I'll probably try to find something much closer to the hotel instead of making that long drive and fighting traffic (including looking for a parking spot).

I'm considering Holder's Country Inn for Breakfast, but I'm waiting to hear from Red-Gren and others about Saturday breakfast plans.

Even if I don't get to Holder's on Saturday, I'll get there Sunday. I'm not leaving until Sunday evening so I could even make a trip into San Francisco on Sunday for lunch. I know that there are a few good places to eat at Pier 39, and I've gotten a hankering for a bucket of donuts.

EDIT: Of course, since Zwiggleroom has mentioned the possibility of something on Friday night, it's keeping my Friday evening plans up in the air a bit until we get word on what he's planning.
  8. Its an autoskip power. Something to be made fun of.

The only good thing about time bomb is that it makes it easy for me to skip it.
  9. Until snipes are fixed, *I* won't take them. Datamine point.
  10. Well first of all the devs have to agree that blaster's crash nukes need a rebalance. Keeping in mind that Defenders and Corruptors will probably get some of the collateral damage as well.

So, until there is a "fix" on beta, I will simply NOT take any crashing nukes and just use the judgement "nuke" instead. That way when they do data mining they will see that most level 50 blasters DO NOT TAKE crashing nukes.

Then I will always make comments about the real blaster nuke being used by scrappers, brutes and tanks. aka LR + SC.
  11. Probably, but they are fairly legit.

I'm hoping that blasters are next in line to be looked at balance wise now that Stalkers finally got some fixes to get them closer to par with the other melee types.

I just hope its Synapse who is tasked with it.
  12. The problem with playing the waiting game is that delays happen. With the Bulldozer being a "disappointment" means Intel has no pressure to be on time with Ivy Bridge.

Nvidia might be late with their stuff as well.

MSI stuff tends to have a shorter lifespan but then again after 3 years the video card is going to need replacing anyways.
  13. Interesting choices. I don't like the 500 GB WD when the 1.5TB with larger cache is the same price.

6870 is probably a better choice or the 560 Ti
The 460 is near EoL and is not worth it compared to the other choices it will also make getting a 2nd video card for SLI even harder. You also picked the worse 192 bit 460 instead of the 256 bit version.

OTOH, if you are not going SLI to start with, then I would say its best to not bother going SLI at all.
  14. I'm sure this will turn into another meet and eats. Yet again, I won't be able to make any of the Friday events but I will be there for any early morning stuff at Orginal Pancakes or Fred's for lunch. I might be available for something on Sunday morning as well.
  15. Well I am a typical tech buyer, I will buy what gives the most performance for the $. I am certainly willing to pay a few extra dollars for better quailty components if it means reduced risk of hardware failure. I have 0 brand loyalty if something comes along that offers better value for the $.

Heh, it should be interesting to hear the ATI and Nvidia fanboy comments when I bump into hyperstrike. That and all the Karnak jokes from people asking for help on tech issues who tell us nothing about their rig and just expect us to know what they have.

Maybe someone else will work on the Nvidia list.

  19. The coolermaster hyper 212 evo should be more than enough for your needs for $30-35 its a very good purchase.

While the Noctua is a better performer, its HUGE! it requires having skill at using needle nose pliers to get things installed around that HUGE thing. Its not cheap either.

    Upgrading my Rig

Funda: At this point spending any money on DDR2 RAM is a horrible waste of money. You have 4GB of RAM which is plenty good enough.

The Antec ECO 400W should be more than enough for your needs. Its $45
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371029

If you are bargain hunting for video cards this one is pretty good for $90.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102940
The 6770 should be more than capable of handling your needs.

As hyperstike says, its important you give us as much info as you can. A 6770 should fit into *MOST* cases but it IS possible you have a sardine can where it won't fit. Its hard for us to figure out what you are looking for since we don't know what your case is and we don't know what your budget is. If you have a bigger budget I might have suggested a 6850 video card, but I know that card is large enough that it won't fit in some cases while the 6770 is smaller and is more likely to fit.

At this point we're guessing, so that's $135 in upgrades that should give a decent bump in performance. You didn't say what kind of CPU you have so YMMV on how much more you will get from it. If you have a Phenom II x4 (with L3 cache not that "athlon II" Phenom II 840) or x6 it should be a nice jump. If you have an Athlon II or Sempron well it will help, but expect lag on trials and other graphic intensive tasks or teaming with MMs.
  21. The signature story arc is great.

#2 can be easily speeded. About 11-12m heroside and 10m villainside.

#1 can be done in the 7-8m range heroside.

So I run through my list of heroes/villains and collect up alignment merits and if they are 50 I collect 10 threads too.
  22. I have a list of which ones are easily speeded and which ones are long.

The best suggestion I have is to abandon Lead NPC out missions. I do that with radio/papers as well.
  23. AMD released the 7750 and 7770 series cards.

Performance is 57xx series level but use less power (75W-100W) range important for those who aren't rocking 1200W PSUs* for their one video card.

*Humor, a 1200W PSU is completely silly but that doesn't stop some poor fools from buying something that they will ever make good use out of.
