Played about 3 hours without any sign of an event. They seem disappointingly infrequent.

Quote:Ahaha, obviously I misread. Now that I've been pantsed in front of the other kids, I'd guess Winter Fire has been taken too. I just checked for the sake of being a twit. Taken on all servers... except Freedom. Go figure.Soooo like, all the names that could have the word "Winter" in them are taken? Even "Winter Fire?" cause that'd blow my mind if that was taken on all the servers.
At any rate, I'll just chime in with StratoNexus and say control is control to most teams. Anyone looking for a ice controller would most likely confirm it before inviting him anyway. -
I wish you luck in getting the name as I am almost certain that it will be taken on all servers.

Quote:Rep is meaningless. Just turn the junk off if it bothers you.Alright guys, thanks for all the help, but due to the fact that 5 or 6 people sent me bad rep just for asking questions has pressured me to stop posting in this thread. Also, pricks like Panikaze, who shouldn't even be on the forums if they're just going to insult people, need to back off and just let me ask my questions.
Anyways, to those of you that DID help (and that was many of you, you know who you are), thanks a ton, I think I have enough information now to at least spec out my controller right and not try to be much of a healer.
As for grav/emp, neither are among my favorite sets for controls. (I find gravity very lacking and enjoy more aggressive secondaries like storm and rad.) I think you might find mind control more suited to the role you want to play. It generates less aggro than other sets which would let you heal in relative safety. Illusion can also let you work without taking much aggro.
But if you stay with grav the I offer these suggestions:- Skip Dimension Shift. I noticed you mentioned it. It is marginally useful alone and as a panic button. In most cases it will be an irritation to your team.
- Shoot for recharge bonuses from sets. As has been mentioned, it'll help the empathy side of things and also bring up your few strong controls faster.
- Be patient. Gravity's best powers come late in the set (at 26 and 32). You may have to team a lot to make it there.
-
Well, there are lots of things going on here that aren't quite right, but you've come to the right place to learn. So first, I'm going to recommend taking a look at all the other fire/kin threads that have popped up. Also, check in the guides section. There's lots of information out there and it can be overwhelming, but maybe we can give you a nudge in the right direction.
First and foremost, Flashfire is a control. No matter how much you slot for damage it can't contribute to significantly. Instead, you want Flashfire to keep you safe. It's your bread and butter control here. Slot it with 4 acc/recharge/stun IO's from sets, a generic accuracy IO, and a generic recharge IO. That'll give you a 25 second stun that recharges in about 45 seconds. That's before hasten or recharge bonuses so you'll be able to keep things stunned more than half the time.
Secondly, Stamina is a great power but you're slotting wastes a lot the enhancement to grab some set bonuses. Recharge and accuracy will do nothing in it. A pretty typical slotting is to use 2-3 slots with end. modification and the +end proc from Performance Shifter in the final slot. Also, this power may not even be necessary if you go with the fire epic. With Consume and Transference you'll have two excellent tools to refill your blue bar. Of course, it could be troublesome if you exemp below the level where you have access to those powers though.
Health is another trouble spot. Generally, folks go with two slots: miracle +recovery and Numina's +regen/recovery just to add more recovery bonuses. Regeneration has a smaller impact when you have fewer hitpoints because it regenerates a percent of the total so slotting it for health has little impact. One of the major draws of health is the fact that it reduces sleep durations used on you by half.
As for your holds, I like the Basilisk set. Using four from it and a triple from another set yields some nice values around 75% enhancement for hold, accuracy, and recharge with a good bonus to global recharge (7.5%) and a ranged defense bonus. You could max out the enhancement of each hold with another triple, but I tend to find that slotting to be enough.
Anyway, this is getting a bit long so I'll wrap it up with a final piece of advice. Do some reading on diminishing returns. You'll find that add more of the same enhancement gives a smaller and smaller bonus until it barely gives any bonus at all. It's a problem you're butting up against in several powers. When the numbers in mid's begin to turn yellow, it means a portion of the bonus has been reduced. When they are red, it means they have been significantly reduced. Sometimes it's better to forgo a final piece in a set if it gives doesn't add to your enhancement and the final set bonus is weak. -
Quote:Way, way back in the day grav/kin was the first toon that I ever rolled. Then I took a nice long break from CoH.As said, fire>gravity if you're looking for damage, although gravity has respectable single target damage. On the other hand, singularity>imps for tanking and controlling and is one of the better pets in the game. Gravity is a functional middle of the road set, although many believe it underperforms and could use tweaking. That aside, grav/kin is a fun combo to play, assuming you actually want to play the game and not just farm x8 maps.
To me grav is more in the ditch off the road soaked by rain and its own tears than middle of the road. It may be fine solo where Propel's absurdly long animation can play out and it can revel in its single target damage. On teams though it feels extremely under-performing. You won't have reliable AoE control until you reach 25 and get access to Wormhole, which by the way only has a 15 ft. radius compared to other AoE stuns of 25 ft. You can make life a bit easier for teams by dropping enemies in the kill zone or you can teleport them out of the action if you aren't paying attention; in short, it takes some awareness to know where and when to use Wormhole. The only other highlight of grav is Singularity at 32, a fine pet and controller unto itself. It's quite sturdy and it can be fun to toss it out in the middle of a mob. Adding to gravity's troubles is the fact that its damage type later becomes highly resisted so as you're blooming in one area you're scaling back in another.
I only find gravity bearable when paired with a control heavy secondary like storm, grav, or trick arrow. If you're looking for a damage heavy control set then plant is a good contender and it blooms very early in terms of AoE control. It does very nicely with rad as a secondary, but will mesh nicely with kin as well. -
It's worth noting that procs firing in AA will add to the aggro that you draw. It's particularly noticable when multiple procs hit multiple targets who then turn to you with their angry faces on.

Quote:As long as you use it under the effect of Powerboost, EMP's duration is double. Even more fun if you use it with your Vanguard Medal. It's actually possible to stack it in that case.i cant speak for power boost, im not sure how it works with a power that has a longer duration then itself, that being said i have a Earth/Rad/Stone that did have EM pulse and i never needed it.
it was great with AVs in combination with fossilize ,volcanic gasses and S-smash, i could on occasion hold an AV by myself.
but other than that i never "needed" it and the build was very very tight if i recall correctly, i specked out of it for fallout. --
but now i never need fallout, so i say go for it
oh and just as a side i think earth/rad is the best combo in the game -
The primary factor for me is when they get boring. Assuming, they've stayed entertaining from 1-50 then I like to IO them out. After that, I bring them out on occasion for tf's or exemp'ing. With the new difficulty settings it's given a lot of old toons new life in that I can test their breaking points then try to build to surpass those.
-
I have a mind/rad/primal and I make frequent use of it. Now, things may be a bit different with Earth. After all, you'lll have tons of awesome control already, but when things start to get sour a power boosted EMP has turned things around for me.

Quote:I skirted this one today. I was looking for the Impeded Swiftness proc and there were none on the market (with bids over 60 mil as I recall). I figured I'd give it a shot with a random roll and got one on the first try.Whenever you cash in Reward Merits or AE Tickets on a character for a recipe, they will always suit a different character you have on a different server/faction.
I'm sure Murphy will lash out at me in many otherwise in his ire. -
PFF will never activate in time to save you from that last shot. Assuming it does, then the 5% chance of that hit landing will occur and you will die anyway.
-
Quote:Storm is still awesome. Lightning Storm is not. It's so slow that I rarely summon it outside of AV fights. It would be nice if they would adjust the fire rate, endurance cost, and/or damage to make it a little less situational.I'm so happy I came in after the TA, Traps, Storm and AR nerfs. I'm able to enjoy those sets. Because they're still freaking awesomesause. From the sound of things they were all /afk easymode before and that sounds less like fun and more like broken game mechanics that would piss me off.
-
I noticed my Fly Trap doing a lot of standing around over the past two days. In fact, when I'd go into pff it wasn't even drawing the aggro to itself. It didn't happen all the time though, so I'll have to watch for what triggers it.

Quote:If you're not aware (you probably are), there are three more episodes that will be aired via the net to finish off the Tsubasa Cat arc. I think they begin on the 25th though.Just chiming in to say that this season is about the suck-suck-suckiest anime season in the history of me remembering anime seasons.
It seems anime is suffering the same creative slowdown that Japan's gaming industry is apparently suffering. That is to say that there is still the odd memorable show (Bakemonogatari [Ghostory] from last season, which honestly, ran too short) but the country's hit a slump when it comes to producing creative work. At least, creative work that I'm interested in.
Anyway, I agree this past season was a bit lame. Bakemonotagari was the highlight, and there were a few decent shows dabbled about (Aoi Hana, Sora no Manimani, Spice and Wolf II). There were also some shows I heard good things about but haven't been able to check out yet (Canaan, Eden of the East). The shows that I expected the most from, FMA: Brotherhood and Melancholy, both fell flat. Also, there was inordinate attention paid to the utter trash that was Saki and Queen's Blade.
Fall looks a bit grim, but I just saw the good news that the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya has been announced for Spring 2010. -
I seem to be stumbling upon lots of yuri themed shows lately.
Aoi Hana (Blue Flowers) - This was a very nice romance. The art is very nicely done with soft tones and a watercolor feel. The characters are also developed nicely though some of the main characters traits are overblown. (Fumi, for example, cries quite a bit.) The characters are full, however, and you'll find yourself empathizing with some and disliking others. If you like slower paced, romantic stories and don't mind girl-girl relationships give it a go. Also, it's a chance to hear Yui Horie in a more serious role.
Sasameki Koto (Whispered Things) - Well, only one episode has been released so far, but it seemed pretty good. While similar in theme to Aoi Hana (more ladies loving ladies), it seems as though it will be bit more light hearted. The art isn't quite up to par with Aoi, and it doesn't pack any powerhouse seiyuu like Yui Horie. The voice talent seems to be relatively new and promising. -
Urotsukidoji (also known as Legend of the Overfiend) has a significant place in discussion of anime just as Deep Throat does in discussion of American cinema and pop culture. If that film doesn't satisfy the criteria to discuss it, consider a few films originally threatened with an NC-17 rating? Requiem for a Dream and The Last Tango in Paris.
The fact that Urotsukidoji modernized one of the most enduring conventions in anime, the tentacle assault, merits at least a mention. Discussing it shouldn't be out of the question. Anyone who has seen To-Love-ru or Queen's Blade, which currently is broadcasting uncensored on AT-X (Tokyo's premiere anime channel), can easily see the impact that it still carries on the genre, for better or worse. Heck, even a generally tame series like Tower of Druaga (available for legal viewing on Crunchyroll in region 1) has one scene filled with tentacles and blushing. It's just that pervasive.
The real problem to me is that it was suggested without caveat lector.
Anyway, for folks not willing to throw down some cash for something the haven't watched, there are legal venues for watching anime on line. Crunchyroll as mentioned. Youtube also has an arrangement with Funimation to stream some series including School Rumble and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Generally, these series are only available for a limited time though. -
No offense intended, but is this list intended for the masses or for yourself? All these rules that you're instating don't make it feel very open to everyone. While Urotsukidoji doesn't float my boat, I might suggest something somewhat questionable such as Elfen Lied or Kodomo no Jikan. Both of those titles are sure to offend some sensibilities, but have their own merit.
If it can be accessed in a legitimate means, we're all given fair warning about the content, and our discussion doesn't violate any forum policies, I don't see why we should limit our suggestions. -
Quote:It no longer allows video uploads and everything there is now licensed. The old video and fansubs are gone. It's definitely not the site that it used to be. For better or worse, it even locks people out depending on their region. There's no longer need for caution. It's all quite legally distributed. If Crunchyroll still allows users to upload stuff (I don't know, I've never used it), and it still has unlicensed stuff there, then it doesn't belong here. Since people would have a tougher time knowing whether or not something is licensed, I'd rather err on the side of caution.
So go check it out. And check out Aoi Hana while you're there, a touching yuri romance. -
Quote:Well, if you like to go about things legally Crunchyroll is the place for you to see a lot of things that haven't been/won't be released in the states. They have an agreement with several studios and broadcasters to air sub-titled shows a week after they have been transmitted and with some even simulcast with the Japanese broadcasts. There are quite a few things there that I'll be watching this season (Natsu no Arashi 2, Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu) and things I've enjoyed in this past season.Ok guys, couple of things that may or may not be an issue...
First, try to give the names as what a Region 1 viewer would find them as in the store.
Second, only titles officially released outside of Japan. I don't care about fansubs nor do I want to endorse them.
Thirdly, try and limit suggestions to one primary genre. If I tried categorizing them by every permutation, there probably wouldn't be more than one in that genre.
Just some things I thought of.
There are too many good shows that will never make it to the US or be horribly subbed and edited to pieces if they make it. I'm glad Crunchyroll is providing an opportunity to see things before the excessively expensive DVD's come out. -
I refer you to these two threads, in which I attempt to explore how Dimension Shift is broken: Linky 1 and Linky 2.
The portion of the power that immobilizes the enemy and removes the detection box appears to work on level scaling. The portion that removes the enemy's ability to affect others or be affected by others, however, works on any mob that is struck by Dimension Shift regardless of level or rank. As a result you get mobs that have no visual effect applied to them, but cannot be affected. Basically, it's working in cases when it doesn't appear to be working. I've pm'ed Castle about the inconsistency but have not had a reply.
I had really hoped that by showing how broken and confusing this power was that it might sway the devs into at least considering how it could be re-worked into something useful. -
Whoo, so many series... I've seen maybe half of what's been suggested so far. If I were to pick some must see's from the list they would be these: Gurren Lagaan, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Welcome to the N.H.K., Serial Experiements Lain, and the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
I'd recommend a few thing that haven't been mentioned yet as well:
Minami-ke - A slice of life comedy surrounding three sisters and their friends. A beautiful first season, but was followed by two season with lackluster animation and production values. Some great voice talents in Chihara Minori (Yuki Nagato from MoHS), Marina Inoue (Yoko from Gurren Lagaan), and Rina Sato (Mikoto from A Certain Magical Index).
Ichigo Mashimaro - Another fantastic slice of life comedy, this one is centered around a young girl, her friends, and her older slacker sister.
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei - A satirical comedy that focuses on a suicidal teacher and the unique personalities in his class. Animation by SHAFT. (Then I can dig it!)
Toradora - A romantic comedy with excellently fleshed out characters. This one contains one of the most romantic scenes I can recall in an anime.
And finally, the best from last season...
Bakemonotagari - A wickedly funny story about a young man who helps those around him to escape from their supernatural problems. It features SHAFT's typical experimental designs and two very catchy OP's. The series consist of 12 broadcast episodes and 3 to be released on the web, which will conclude the story. -
Quote:Without having leveled both yet, I can only speculate as of yet. I have run a fire/ff'er to 50 though. Based on that experience, I don't expect a lot of additional mitigation from fire. Flashfire always seemed to have the annoying tendency to notify mobs before the effect hit, meaning a healthy amount of return fire. That could just be my perception based on the longish animation though (which begs the question why is it longer than stalagmites). Also, the fear effect in hotfeet only seemed to serve as mitigation when the enemies weren't immobilized.I'm not sure that the Ice/Rad will win on Safety, either. Flashfire+Fire cages, run in with Hot Feet and Choking Cloud, imps trailing behind. Char anything that moves. Because stuff dies pretty quickly, it is pretty safe, and both Cinders and Bonfire can work as a "panic button" powers. Ice gets Glacier at 26, but because Ice controls without killing, foes have a lot longer to break out of the control and attack.
I think ice has two distinct advantages: the slow affect and better tactics. The slow helps a great deal in situations where other controls fail. As I mentioned before, the ITF is a good example. Nemesis and certain Arachnos fit the bill as well. Ice also garners the benefit that some of its work can be done out of sight by dropping an ice slick from around a corner. There's also the strategy of dropping an ice slick, toggling EF on a mob, and moving out of its range. Due to rather stupid AI, they'll run right on to the ice slick allowing you to move in and do your work.
I would also consider the Arctic Air/Choking Cloud combo a significant advantage to safety, especially when slotted with Contagious Confusion and Lockdown's +2 mag proc. Also, Jack isn't an aggro crazy primate.
Of course, it all comes back to a topic you and Enant already covered. At a certain point more mitigation is unnecessary. However, if a team is relying on a single controller to get them to that point my money is still on Ice over Fire. -
I have an Ice/Rad/Psi that's all proc'ed out. At times it is efficient and fun and at other times frustratingly slow. I'm working on a Fire/rad now, but it's still in the teens. I imagine the ice/rad just barely inches it out in terms of safety, but loses points for consistency in defeating enemies.
