I'll admit, it took me too long to stumble into this thread, and that I haven't read through it all yet, but there are 2 simple things I would be overjoyed in seeing done, and I don't think they are game breaking in anyway
1) Weave, give it some defense debuff resistance, the amount is open to debate, I'm not the best with ingame dynamics so someone more cluey than myself could set the amount. This would at least give resistance sets (and other sets that dont have DDR) a chance to at least combat the lovely defense cascade we all know of. You could even set the DDR in weave to be AT specific, I don't know, up to the makers
As an example, I have 35% defense stored up by spending (probably over a billion) in IO's on my fire tank, All this completely dissapears against some enemies, making what I have spent and the time invested, null and void. Once on an ITF, even after swallowing a purple before combat, I was at something around -113% S/L defense before I face planted. NOTHING in the game would of saved me from that save phase shift! I don't think Phase shift is an option!
2) Up the agro cap. whether you're set for x8 or you have 8 people on your team, the current agro cap often doesn't cover the mobs you run up against, and then you might be ambushed, many times have i seen the last man standing, the lone tanker, already loaded up on agro, the rest of the enemies have nowhere else to turn but the squishes! I know my judgement powers can it 40, and i'm not saying the agro cap has to be 40, but do Up it!
Perhaps we could have a different dynamic for agro? I know that with IO's some tanks simply will not be defeated no matter how many enemies are agroed on to them, but someone just on SO's for example, might have trouble. Perhaps when slotting taunt, instead of increasing taunts duration, have it effect target count.
anyway, just my 2 cents -
All butt kicking aside, Im looking forward to running on Protector again, I have a fire tanker of there in need of a rebuild, sure it'll run AE missions at x8+4 faster than anything(I wasn't farming people, honest!), but put it up to tougher mobs, forget it
I need to do an exact copy of my fire tanker on exalted, that thing is like a Timex
-
Oh I will say, I know this build might look similiar to one posted before, but thats just the way it happens I guess. For example, it took me days of constant rebuilding before I came up with an Illusion/Time Controller build I finally felt happy with. It might seem a bit extreme, but a) I enjoy looking over this stuff, and b) the build I came up with should be amazing!
Softcapped to S/L/E/N defense, S/L resist capped, and 110% global rechargeShould get the job done!
But then, i've never really played Illusion before! (yes I can hear people now! HOW COULD YOU NOT!?) Oh well, only been playing since issue 6, I guess nows as good a time as any
-
This is the one I have settled on, I have lost a touch of defense, now its 37.4% to S/L/E/N before alpha slot, but it has a touch more recharge. You could also remove the Multistrike from Defensive sweep and pop that proc in there and still have enough accuracy due to set bonuses. I find it a decently well rounded build.
You could still go for removing physical perfection and replace it with hasten if you wanted, I may well do that but my tank isn't complete so im still unsure of its final build, but this is what I am working on. Still, I have taken him into the battle maiden map at x8 +2 (as he stands, he isn't finished) and he barely took a dent to the green bar. Still a touch end heavy for me but that should improve, also I have to get used to actually using Power Sink. The last tanker I built (which I Still can't stop playing mind you) is my fire/fire/pyre, yet I did not take consume! So im not used to doing so on my Elec/TW.
However you decide to build your tank, let us know how it goes

My current favourite, by a mile, is my fire/fire/pyre. Sure enough, buff those defenses up and the thing pummels. Combustion/fire sword circle/fireball is too much fun in mobs
I have heard good things about fire/ss but haven't had any experience with the combo yet, I believe I have a lvl 10ish waiting for more play time -
-
yeah in the end i told them i'd take care of it, so I quit that team and was going to form another all tanker one, but Then I 'thought' i heard that war was assembling a team, though he really wasn't , so I kinda messed it up there, but in the end we still got a couple of missions in.
Don't worry Hyper, as a devoted tanker tuesday man, I know things are usually much cooler than thatI guess we just ran into a case of the freedumbs (not my words
)
Lookin forward to the next one! -
oops, i missed pm, primal? oh well, you could still copy that basic build type
-
Came up with a quick and dirty build, fire/energy actually sounded interesting, so I might save it for a later time. I took the Fire epic, I don't know which one you used though, but I liked the idea of Fireball for a second AoE
.
I came up with 36.3% S/L and 32.5% N/E defense. 118% base Hp and 110% recharge with Hasten up, 40% without. This gives Healing flames a recharge speed of 13 seconds. This is all before any alpha slot of course. I'd like the idea of Agility for this one, more defense, recharge and enough endurance to help keep those toggles up.
This might be tough enough. I run a simliar fire/fire/pyre and it'll happily tear through most everything at x8+3, I really haven't tried anything at x8+4 other than a few specific enemies, surprising though, CoT and Malta are little trouble at that setting, Carnies though, im still eating a purple before leaping in, and of course, anything that deals Smashing or Lethal (or fire) damage, you'll be fine at any setting.

Quote:I must say my build has changed from what I posted, but I am very much on a learning curve as well, having only just gotten TW a few weeks ago. my tank is 50 and i THINK he's finally specced the way I want, I'd be happy to throw you a build. Thanks a lot for the great feedback.
I had a good long look at kangaroo´s build before I made a start on this one. This´ll be my second electric tank, my first is superstrenght and is softcapped to S/L and has 90% res in S/L/E with the aid of some overslotting and judicious use of endurance enhancers. He´s very, very tough, and is one of my favorite characters. His build is on the forums somewhere too. I started designing the build for Midgard Maiden before having played around with Titan Weapons, so i was unsure as to which powers were essential. So thanks for the inspiration there.
I chose physical perfection because of the extra help managing endurance it gives, and it isn´t demanding on slots. With all the slots I´ve put into brawl and kick, there wasn´t a lot left over.
I used the Multi-strike set in lightning field because it gives decent accuracy, damage and most of all endurance reduction. It also gives a defense bonus which helps her hit the softcap to S/L without defensive strike.
I´d quite like the Gladiator 3% proc. If you sent one to my mail, I´d be sure to use it(Actually, it´d probably end up in my elec/shield scrapper instead because of the changes to Enzymes - but don´t let that stop you sending one!) It would help save some slots definately. The slotting, though not perfect, still gets the most out of the powers.
A very good catch with regards to the 4th slots in weave and maneuvers, they weren´t doing a great deal. They ended up in energize.
Thanks for your ideas New Dawn. I did seriously consider slotting a quad or triple IO instead of Hami-O´s. I ended up keeping them after the other changes. Without the accuracy bonuses from IO sets, I wasn´t very happy with the accuracy of the powers. Hami´s helped there.
Thanks again for the feedback.
Pit Viper aka Crash Induction, Union
Also, you can also consider going positional defense instead of typed. After all, that first attack grants Melee defense (also, don't forget that you can put a LoTG 7.5 in there!!). However I haven't been able to settle on a build I like going for positional, but What you are a looking for and how you play are quite personal things really, however people are always willing to throw you their opinions
Happy hunting Pit ViperGo forth and 'Arrest' people with that larger than life axe.. or sword, or hammer.. or...
-
I ended up going typed on mine, S/L/E/N at 38%, he's pretty dang solid, and easy enough to build and tweak.
I skipped both those attacks as well, You can miss them a little in the beginning, but I ended up with lightning field really early, helps a touch, plus when you hit 50, you wont miss them, you can keep that gigantic sword swinging continuously without any down time with just a bit of +rech in there.
Also, you could pick up more attacks early then spec out of them later. I did that with a couple of tanks in the past. But i've been playing for so long though I have more respec's and costume change tokens than i'm ever going to need -
Eh, similiar to an idea I had actually, 4 slotted brawl as well, kinda odd , but hey, gotta love the defense values on there.
Here was my early idea. I am making some adjustments as I play though and it has changed somewhat.
edit, yes that glad proc, insanely expensive and difficult to get, or i'd be putting in every build I could think of

Yep, saw me there. got a notice of the well for my brand new 50, Elec/TW tanker
Tyvm tankers
also a couple of tips and a +2 Marauder went down rather handily
-
Here was my first build for my Elec/TW tanker, so far I've kept to the build , he is now 48. It has 37% defense to S/L/E/N on top of his resists and power surge. Energize rechargers in 48 seconds.
However, this can be changed a little, I was going to go Agility Core, which would buff his defense to 38.9 and boost his end recovery and recharge. That being, I was considering dropping power sink or physical perfection for hasten, even though it already has about 50% global recharge. Either way you go, there is some room for tweaking. Even dropping a slot somewhere and popping the Glad +3% defense io somewhere. You could also change the slotting around in physical perfection for more endurance if I need. So far, I have found this build quite sturdy (since it uses a lot of lower level IO's he's already quite slotted) and a lot of fun.

Actually, I should comment again, this time, reguarding my wifes netbook. win 7 , Intel graphics chip, atom processor, 2Gb ram, Acer 5320 (i think), neat little device once you remove the incredible amount of bloatware off the thing. Get this, this little netbook will happily run CoH for hours on end (even on battery, love the battery life of that thing)
Now granted, since its running a gfx chip barely capable of anything 3D, putting the graphics up higher than safemode will cause you to look at a slide show (its basically set to minimum, then up the resolution to its native), yet despite its lack of resources, it too will happily run the game. CoH really isn't all that bad a piece of software -
Wow, is that it? For a tanker only IO set? about the only thing there I like is the increase to health and recharge bonus, other than that, i see nothing in that set i'd even consider on my inv/ss. Now for SR maybe with the zero amount of resists it has until its too late anyway, those S/L resist bonuses may stack.
As a counter point, here is my inv/ss build , 46% def to all but psi with one mob in range, a little bit of recharge to keep rage doubled over . Going with Agility Core, you'll tripple Rage and get 49.4% (might as well say 50%) defense to all but psi! and almost perma Dull Pain. This tanker is no slouch! Also, drop a slot from CJ, add it to a shield and slot the gladiator, that'll be 53% defense to all, if all you're doing is incarnate trials

My computer is a couple of years old and no, I never really have issues with CoH. Mind you, I never really have issues with a lot of things. I even completed skyrim without an issue. I think people just like to keep a lot of software running on their systems and it interfeers with everything.
My system.. (home built, I never budget for the best of the best, but I will do my homework about stuff)
Win 7 x64 Ultimate
8Gb ddr 3 ram
amd quad core at 3.8Ghz
2x 1TB HDD and 1x 2TB HDD

I would comment that as you build up your defense to E/N/F/C you are also building up Ranged and AoE, though too a lesser degree. But the trade off is that now you do have a small amount of defense to psi
Congrats . Pop a purple when you're fighting in the asylum if you start having trouble
As for a patron, how about Mace Mastery, then you can be an inv/axe/maceand make people do a double take
edit, and yes, call me awesomes advice for invulns should be considered for every build -
Mauk said it well
I used to collect axes, Rularuu, Rikti (thats a good one) Vanguard, don't forget your Roman axes
Axe melee is a fun set, all that knockdown offers you some 'soft control' keeping the enemies from taking shots at you while their trying to stand back up again. A good mix of single and multiple target attacks will mean you should have something really nice to use at any situation.
So far, i've prefered my Inv/Axe over my Elec/TW, but i haven't built up my TW enough to comment more.
As for Invuln, not sure. I know that Axe melee is a touch end heavy, but Invuln is light. Perhaps this, As long as your facing at least even con enemies, all the axe attacks do is knockdown and knockup, not knockback! keeping enemies around you but unable to attack you at the same time is doubly good for your survivability as an invuln. It stops them from attacking you while at the same time keeping your defense nice and high with lots of targets in range of invinicibility.
Then of course, there is the KA-CHUNK! -
I have tanks on every server, some just for Tanker Tuesdays, some only get played on Tanker Tuesdays, even those gain levels fairly well and its never boring

I agree with some of the sentiment going on in here. The current engine has had so much stuff tacked on to it its not running the way it should. The game is far from seamless and the bugs we get each issue are just , well, they shouldn't be there.
They can announce that (for example) taunt auras on willpower tanks will be increased to 1 second, then all of a sudden purple sets don't work anymore as a result. What the hell just happened??? We see stuff like this crop up nearly every issue. The engine just doesn't handle polygons and all the added UI like a more refined engine would. Having tried half a dozen newer MMO's (and really not paying attention to any of them for long, don't worry about me there, I have to many friends and fun here), I am constantly reminded of just how bad CoH can look and perform in comparison. Now don't mis-understand me, by bad im talking about a purely technical aspect, nothing more.
CoH2? nah. Now if all they do is replace the current engine with a better one, that'll make all the difference we need
For the time being, we should look at streamlining the current engine. All the base salvage we used to use before IO's is STILL in there, i'll log onto the occasional character I might have floating around and its still holding base salvage, its time to wipe all that off the system. Same with all the different currencies, bring it down to 1 or 2 systems, not the 4 or 5 we have now, having a smaller database for the game to worry about is bound to help.
Anyway, its time to log in and spend some fun decimating mobs on my fire/fire/pyre tanker -
didn't see your note about the shadow shard, i'll have to run my tanker there tomorrow and check it out. its been a while
-
To increase survivability on a fire tanker its best to build up something the set doesn't have, defense. It has decent resist and the fastest heal in the game, but (just about) every little attack is going to chip away at your green bar unless you build up some defense. I would advise however, that you consider tough/weave. My own fire/fire/pyre tanker has tough and weave, with %70 Smashing/Lethal resistance and 35% defense to Smashing/Lethal/Energy/Negative and solos just about every mob type at x8 +2, (with quite a bit of speed too I might add) +4 for some of them .
Sticking with most of your parameters I put together a quick and very dirty build with enough defense to make a difference, just to give you some ideas, by no means would i suggest copying it outright, its coming up on 2am here, im sure the brains a little sluggish at the moment. It'll put you about 1 small purple from the softcap for the same defenses but I find on my own tank, it really isn't neccessary to worry about the purples, unless the up coming mob looks extra tough.
This isn't the only way to build one of course, you could build up to go positional defense as apposed to typed, but I find typed builds easier to mess around with.
