hell I have a slow connection compared to you lot and I still get it in just a couple of hours.

personally, i'd hold off until that ION platform stats showing up, dual core intel atom and an nVidia card, early testing on these has shown framerates in games have doubled over whats out now.
As others have seen, i grabbed a cheap $300 laptop, wiped vista, put XP on it and it has been a joy to play coh on now! -
Heh, I made a side SG called the Combat Kangaroos on justice, though we have specific... requirements
I know a few Justice-ites have seen Jirra hopping about :P -

*runs off to see if the name is taken* -
Woooohoooo
Success.
The omega drivers installed without a hitch. didn't have to mod or anything.
Now City of Heroes (and W:ET for that matter), play perfectly, not glitching
Its set up almost the exact same way as my desktop and will be a great comfort for when I go back for surgery on my other foot (when that happens, I won't even be able to sit at my computer desk).
Thanks for the tips guys! -
haha well, i aint going to flame anyone on vista, but yeah I know the bloat they put on laptops is awful, that aspire one was dreadful
-
I agree with Grimlek, plants Seeds of confusion does WONDERS for a positron. I've done one with my plant/storm, was the most painless posi i've ever run, period!
However...
Plant is an Awesome AoE machine, whats this mean? 10-20... 30 minions? not a problem. Indeed, i have locked down 2 seperate spawns at once that were too close to each other, and, if need be, able to take them out fairly quickly..
But... Single hard targets.. are your sworn enemy!
My plant/storm is OI'ed out, is an amazing mob mauling machine, yet I can barely den't a GM. while I know this is because Storm isn't the most fantastic Debuffing set, it does offer damage, but not enough.
Tried but true.. Ill/rad is a beast for an AV soloer. It might seem a little FoTM but there is a reason for thatNot only do you have the wonderfull debuffage of Radiation, but your pets are ranged, and you have the perfect alpha strike taker in Phantom Army.
Maybe take a epic pool to help with the single target damage and your golden.
Having said all that, I have my own question. How would Fire/Rad stack up? or for that matter, Fire/Thermal -
Ok I'll grab the latest omega driver and try it out. I wish there was a laptop equivelent >.< the laptop nVidia site was much more informative, but it may just be what i am used to. I will let you know what happens. I tried my old Wolfenstein Enemy Territory on the laptop too, I get the same result as CoH.
Here's hopin -
I'd agree with the cookies. I find on my pocket pc it helps to flush them every now and then

Ok Tech forum Guru's I am in need of enlightenment!
I can take care of my desktops here without issue, I know exactly whats goin on and how to fix it. I usually go with hardware/software I am familiar with to help make things smoother.
In steps, my laptop. It's nothing fancy, one of those $300 dollar things you can get at most PC warehouses,
Aspire 5515
1.6Ghz amd processor
2Gb (gonna be 3 shortly) of ram
160Gb HDD
x1200 Ati Gfx chip
Windows.... Vista.
In my mind, Vista shouldn't of been on here. Sure it runs fine and all, but don't run anything else on top of it. Trying to play COH on it was a little nightmareish. I literally had to play it in safe mode. and even then, lower the graphics scaling when there was more than me on the screen.
I thought, why not. I formatted the thing, put Windows XP Sp3 on there. No more vista, no more of the ridicious bloat that comes with most laptops.
Completely painless install. everything works (even the built in web cam). Lets try City of heroes....
OH my god, wow! I can leave it on regular settings now! Taking off FSAA to make it smoother.
THats where my new issue arrises.
Every now and then, I see a flicker.. not much but It kinda looks like, for a split second, your seeing the textures underneth the floor, or behind the wall. I saw this before on my Aspire One too, but i didn't keep that thing long enough to mess with it.
Now, I got what I thought was a graphics driver for it, it said Ati , but it was 160 Mb O.o .. But I realise this is the same thing as the nForce drivers I use. contains the chipset drivers and so forth.
My question is. Will the regular most recent Catalyst drivers work on my laptop? or do i need laptop drivers? I know the manufacturers website won't help me as they only support vista for the laptop, I had to go to the component manufacturers for drivers.
I would like to grab the most recent omega drivers for Ati, Are they my best bet?
Thanks for reading! -
I'd agree, turn it to 2x or off. the higher resolution should mean less of a need for FSAA, though don't quote me on that. Either way, less FSAA will mean less work on that card and hopefully give you more frames

oh yeah, didnt see those uniques in there. but it was just for general perusing
-
im guessing the limiting factor is power supply and / or motherboard slot (agp pci-e? ) how about a 7000 series?
like a 7800 7900, either of those would perform better than an 8400, im just not sure on power consumption
We had a 7900GS fail on a computer here and we replaced it with a 8600GT, the 7900 performed better! (though it was cheap and painless)

Here is an old one i have for my Shield/Axe tanker, should be able to play around with it for Mace. Gives you 45% melee with Phalanx Fighting off plus Aid self. Should be a VERY survivable tank. with Phalanx fighting on with 1 person in range, your defense goes over 50%

hehe don't worry about the earth controllers. they are recognised as a very solid control set
I have a Earth/Thermal in the works actually
-
yeah we need a hijack this and a cohhelper log.
Right away im thinking...
1) some new piece of software or something malicious
2) heat! get some compressed air, it might be your CPU gettin warm (i've had this happen before, and CoH heats up my cpu more than crysis, think about it )
3) Tell the updater to verify all files. Remember, just because you run the updater doesn't mean its verifying the files its running. It will only do that unless you crash out! Or, you tell it to.
4) Scandisk/Defrag. Lost cluster over a Certian CoH file mebe?
5) ram chip gone trumps, CoH uses a lot of ram but im sure your other games would of noticed this too
I could go on and on, but you say nothing else is giving you the trouble. My wife has had that card for about a year now, no worries so far. Show us some logs. the people here should be able to help you -
I gotta raise Crane Kick up another point. Its like the ultimate humiliation, sending a defeated foe accross the room.
Also, on my plant/storm/stone controller, I quite like smashing a mob with Fissure, its the footstomp that has a small amount of range to it and it makes the earth raise up in a small AoE.
Get a few mobs in a cluster damaged with holds and debuff then stomp the ground with fissure, much fun as they all collapse -
Vines is useful here too. I know it takes a while to charge, but i have it down pretty well. but if your lookin for an easy mob to take down every once and a while, don't forget your vines.. then go ahead and throw seeds, I always get 1 or 2 confused.
