And if we need to raise money to buy the IP, I can put my refund towards that cause.

    Awesome.

You know, that's almost exactly our feelings here. We only paid month to month do we're not getting much back but, when the time comes that somebody needs our money to get the game rolling again ... well, we seem to have all this money we haven't spent on subscription fees lately...

    re: Elevator pitch

A profitable, established, award winning game with thousands of loyal fans is being discontinued by it's current publisher. You might have heard about this in a recently trending topic all over the internet. The creators and players of City of Heroes are looking for a new publisher to help this game continue and grow. You, as the head of <<insert name here>> can guarantee yourself a loyal fanbase by agreeing to take up the reins of Paragon Studios and City of Heroes.

    It's not perfect, but it's a start.

Or is there something you had in mind for us to do right now? Is there, perhaps, a way for us to promote the game to other publishers?

I'm no advertising guy - but I would assume a "pitch" to a publisher like Steam (just to use a recent example) would be different than advertising the game to the public?

I remember Ascendant saying that he tried to make the core of his character concepts, like Ascendant or Doctor Crom, come from what he called "The Elevator Pitch".

It's called that because the idea is to pitch the idea of a TV series or movie to a studio executive in the amount of time you have while you are traveling between floors on an elevator. You have a "captive" audience at that point, but very limited time. (There's a classic story - unknown if apocryphal or not, that Gene Roddenberry sold "Star Trek" on the basis of pitching it as "Wagon Train to the Stars" to a network executive. That's a classic "elevator pitch" if ever there was one!)

So, I suppose my idea here is - can we develop an "Elevator Pitch" for City of Heroes targeted at a publisher?

Remember - you have to time it out: Write something out and then read it aloud. Assume your maximum time is 30 seconds or so. (You've gotten lucky and your elevator is going straight to the ground floor with no interruptions/people getting on.) But 10-15 seconds would be ideal.

So that's my take. I don't have one ready and I'm not sure I can do it. But I thought I'd throw the idea out there.
I had not thought of the short pitch but that is a very valid point. I shall have to think about that and see what I can come up with. It should include as many facts as possible. Hmmmmm. I'll think about it but, not tonight, it's after midnight and the brain is fogging a bit.

If anyone else has an idea they want to try for this I will be happy to hear it and offer suggestions. Anything and everything we can do will be useful.

I'm definitely not ready to pretend CoH and Paragon are long dead and gone. People get these fantasies in their heads about private servers, without having any real idea of the incredible amounts of experience and money it would take to actually do it. Not to mention that, even amongst actual professional programmers and developers, it is mad crazy hard to pick up another team's code let alone add to it. I don't think any of the dreamers really realize how....lowly it all would wind up, if it ever even got off the ground at all. And few are going to want to pay the same money for vastly inferior product, and fewer are going to want to devote the insane man hours to it that it would take for little to no money. And servers definitely don't grow on trees.

Let's keep putting our heads together to find a publisher, if anything, and save Paragon Studios AND Paragon City in one fell swoop.
Actually, I'm not sure I was understood here.

Right now we are doing everything we can as a community to save this game. We're spreading the word and making noise and drawing attention, and that is doing some good. But once the game is saved we need to keep doing all of that.

Whoever picks up this game may not have the money to provide for advertising. At least not for a while. We, as a community, can help fill that gap. The same things we are doing now as a community can be shifted from "save the game' to "promote the game."

As I said, this may be a bit premature but I always believe that it's just as useful to plan for success as it is to plan for failure.

    Take it as you will.

    Just a thought.

    Good Evening all,

I'd like to bring up an idea that might sound a bit premature but perhaps it is something we need to be thinking about.

This idea is based on the premise that a new person, or group of people, aquire everything they need to continue/restart City of Heroes. As has been mentioned before, this will most likely be expensive and will lead to reduced development for some time. These people (whoever they may be) will need to devote what money they have to operating and maintaining the game.

This is where we come in.

It's a fact that City of Heroes never had a major advertising budget. Perhaps that led to our current situation, and that can and will be debated for some time but WE the City of Heroes community can do something about that.

The same devotion and skills and passion that we have shown in our attempt to preserve the game will need to be turned into a campaign to PROMOTE the game.

We will need to spread the word to those players that have left the game and let them know that they can come home. We will need to let those people who have just learned about our game know that they can come see what all the fuss was about.

We will need to let the world know that the City needs heroes again and everyone is welcome.

Like I said, this may be premature. There are too many factors in play right now and all we can do is keep refusing to go quietly. But, once we have succeded, we will need to do everthing we can to make sure that we do not win the battle only to lose the war because we decided that we've done enough.

This is my proposal. Plan "W", for "Welcome to City of Heroes."

  9. Think of it this way, most of us expected nothing at all in the way of refunds or, at best, an offer to apply our unused game time to another NCSoft game (which we mostly didn't want.)

It's not the best of all possible news, but it's not the sound of the hammer on the coffin nail. Until we KNOW there's no hope, then we still have hope.

We're not dead yet people. Put down the shovel.
  10. Stellar job as always Zwill. Here's hoping that you'll be able to give us better news in the near future.

Also, this is better than we hoped it would be. Most of us were expecting nothing or an offer to apply the time to other NCSoft games.

It's not the best possible news, but it's not the worst either.

    We're not dead yet.
  11. Yeah, but those of us that have a bit of "trekkie" in the blood are just waiting for the chance to say.....

    NYAA NYAA NYAA...
  12. OK stick with me here...

Until we know, we don't know.

Until somebody who officially knows tells us, we don't know.

Until somebody officially says no, yes is still an option.

Until somebody officially says yes, no is still an option.

Paragon's fate is not entirely in our hands at this point. All we can do is watch, and wait, and keep making noise.

And, since we have so much time on our hands at the moment, I'm sure there's a Task Force out there somewhere that needs doing.

    We're not dead yet.

  16. Revenge scheme...

    hm...

nope, not even considering this. Sure, I'll stop giving them my money but not for any anger based reason, you understand, but becuse they only ever had one property that I was willing to give them money for.

Revenge? There's nothing I could do that would help. However, I might continue to be highly critical of NCSoft and, when asked my personal opinion, I might be less than charitable when speaking about them in a public forum...

    ...like the internet...

    ...for years...

And I shall consider this as close to gospel as it gets. A note on the clientside storage if I may? Does that mean that I every map I've ever been on is already stored on my computer?
  18. ... for those who might know.

How far can demorecord "see" at any given time? In other words, to get the data on an entire map, would I need to travel across that map or would just a few seconds of recording be enough to save the information?

Second question: does the size of the map matter? For example: If I am outdoors on a zone map would the record need more information to save the map as opposed to a mission map?

Just a few questions that came into my head the other night while running around Moth Cemetary.

Well, if they are a professional analyst, then another member of our community has a skill set that could (potentially) be useful.

Lets face it, by this point we've learned that our player base contains a wide range of professionals. We've learned of authors and gaming industry professionals, members of our community with legal skills have chimed in from time to time, we have tech experts and artists and thousands of "ordinary" people who are contributing where and how they can. Whether this is a professional or a talented amateur, it is useful information.
  20. Best case scenario is that somebody picks up the game and is able to devote the large amounts of money it would take to pick things up as if nothing had happened.

    I don't see this happening

Bare minimum I could be happy with is that the game is run and supported as it is right now. Even if this means no new content for some time, there is still thousands of hours of content in the game.

  24. Hiya Paragonners. Alexis Alexander here with a few vitality-challenged friends.

For those of you who have not had the pleasure of meeting them, the walking Tikis are a manifest spirit of the Banished Pantheon, a cult dedicated to bringing their particular gods back into existence. In fact, they tend to be a bit single-minded about it. So single minded in fact that about 30 percent of the missing persons cases reported to the PPD can be attributed to them.

Yes, readers. That means almost exactly what it sounds like. The Pantheon are not above using the pain and suffering of innocents to raise power. And guess who the closest innocent victim was. Go ahead. I'll give you three guesses. Right! One battered, beaten and bruised reporter.

As I saw it I had three options. I could: One, dive into the surf and take my chances with drowning and sharks, only to be caught by zombies before I had gotten ten yards: Two, stand my ground and take down maybe one or two zombies before being pounded into paste by the Tiki. Or, Three: bolt into the woods and try to outrun them while thinking of a better plan.

I'm a big fan of plan 'C". It's always nice to have one. Just in case plans "A" and "B" fail.

I'm not a hero. Nor am I a fool. I threw my stick at the closest zombie and ran for the woods like a rabbit with a hawk hot on her tail. The only way I was going to get out of this alive was to be as far away from the undead as possible, and the only way to do that was to try and imitate an Olympic sprinter.

I have to admit that I was proud of myself readers, I managed to clear the beach and get several yards inland before I heard movement behind me. I had a head start; which was good, but I had no idea how long it would last. If I was going to get Caridad and myself out of this alive, I was going to need something more than just running away. The problem was, I didn't really have any better plan.

If I thought running downhill was bad, running across and up one was worse. Rocks, tree roots, and vines all seemed to be trying to kill me; which, in a way, was a comfort. It was better them than the Pantheon.

I'd come up with the very rough plan of circling around and making for the beach again (the sharks were looking better all of the time) when the tiki crashed out of the trees to my left. I caught the movement just in time to duck under the first swipe from it's clawed hands and I turned that into a forward roll to keep out from under it's feet.

That seemed to confuse the tiki which gave me a moment to get back on my feet and to settle into something resembling a fighting stance. The relationship between ice sculptures and flamethrowers ran through my head with me playing the part of the swan as I launched into a low spinning kick intended to take the tiki's feet out from under it. Surprisingly, it worked better than I expected. Tiki's don't really have knees but I must have hit something right because it went over onto its back with a ground shaking crash.

Score a point for Kings Row Karate, my home dojo!

One of the things they teach in most fighting schools is to follow up on an advantage when you have one. I finished the kick and bounced (somewhat slowly) back to my feet. Two short steps forward placed me close enough to plant another solid kick into the the tiki's chest as it started to rise. I was lucky enough to be uphill from the tiki before I hit it. My kick started it on a short slide downhill.

That gave me a few more seconds of much needed breathing room. I was running through attack options in my head and coming up with very few that sounded any better than 'keep hitting it until one of us falls down.' The tiki lumbered to it's wooden feet (forgive the pun) and started back uphill. I took a moment and slowed my breathing and centered my stance and tried to focus all of my chi into one devastating punch.I pulled my arm back and, as the tiki got within reach, let out a shout and let fly with a punch straight into it's midsection.

I felt my fist connect with the wood (which feels exactly as good as it sounds like it does, readers) and had a brief moment of pride as I saw a section of wood chip off and fall to the ground. I had done it readers. I had actually damaged it. I had hurt it. I had let it know that I was not going without a fight...

Unfortunately, I had also made it angry.

The tiki paused for a moment. Flames blazed from its eyes and mouth and although it wasn't speaking, I had a pretty good idea that what it was saying wasn't very complimentary.

It moved fast, far faster than I could react. It's arm swept out and smashed me back into the trees.I felt something in my ribs snap...again. I was already beaten up and now I couldn't breathe. This fight was over and most likely, so was my life.

I tried to think of something clever to say. Something that would provide a final, fitting statement of my life. It was a reporter's dream, the chance to write my own epitaph. But, since I couldn't really draw a decent breath, I'd have to settle for a gasping, wheezing, growl.

Dark flames roared out of the tiki's eyes as it raised both arms above its head for an overhand smash that would do nothing less than crush my skull and bring the whole fight to a sudden, messy end. I kept my eyes open, not because I wanted to face my death with dignity it was more that I was to terrified to do anything else. It was only because of this that I saw the top half of the tiki disappear with a buzzing whine.

Terror led to confusion then to shock. I looked past the remaining half of the tiki and saw a slender, auburn headed girl wearing a bomber jacket and looking down the sights of a glowing, baroque, firearm. She lowered the rifle and looked at me with an ear splitting grin.

I could hear the blood pounding in my ears as my consciousness finally decided to step out for a few minutes. Just before the darkness took over I heard her voice...
