um. Processes should load whether or not you have a network connection.

I would believe a large number of programs starting, then failing over because they don't have an internet connection (like Pidgin).

Okay. so you got back to the Windows Desktop, but now the start menu is no longer working?

You are able to click on icons and use the keyboard though?

Can you hit control-alt-delete and bring up the TaskManager for me?

In the task manager, go to Processes and look for an entry labeled explorer.exe

If you've got some kind of mouse control, try right clicking on explorer.exe and ending it.

The start menu and any other icons on the screen should disappear.

Now, in the task manager, click on File, then click on run

In the box that pops up, type the command: exploror.exe and hit enter

    ***

This will restart the Exploror base for Windows. Are you now able to click on and use the start menu?

    ***

also, here's something you can try to repair the computer, but you'll need to have a Windows Install CD. A recovery CD won't do, has to be an actual physical Windows XP install Disc.

With the Task Manager Open (Control-Alt-Delete to bring it up), put the CD in the drive and click on File, then Run in the Taskmanager.

type in the command: sfc /scannow

    and hit enter.

This will cause Windows to compare it's current OS base with the base from the CD. If anything is different, Windows will use the CD to copy in the original files.

And how did you try to restart? Contrl / Alt / Delete? Power button down for 10 seconds?
  6. My guess is... probably not.

NCSoft's more than gun-shy about funding PvE games to work on PvP play after the debacle that was Tabula Rasa. From a financial standpoint, NCSoft would much rather push players towards AION, which was, as it seems to be represented, built for PvP play from Day 1.

For the short term, and possibly long term, this means that any serious PvP development is probably over for City of Heroes. From what we know about game subscriptions, CoH never has built up a PvP player base that's actually capable of providing the funding just on subscriptions alone... and seriously doubtful on providing the money through a PvP themed booster pack.

No. I'm judging both movies. and both have been universally panned.

And I think Equilibrium is a better action movie than SF movie, and judging it as an SF movie I think obscures much of what it brings to the table.
In other words, it brings nothing to the table but gun/kata. I don't see how this is disproving my point that this isn't a movie people should go out of their way to see.

I guess it wouldn't have been so... um... I don't think bad is the right word that I'm working for... I think the movie would have had a better impact if it's followup, UltraViolet, hadn't just been the same exact film... just with Milla Jovovich instead of a Christian Bale, doing the shooting and fighting.

As it stands, both of the movies are fairly skippable for any science-fiction fanatic. Outside of the gunplay / sword play, they never really do anything to set themselves further apart than from... say the Matrix Trilogy... aside from having worse acting... worse scripting... and really, with Keanu Reeves on board, the Matrix is entering that competition with the likes of a millstone around it's neck.

They brought some interesting combat ideas into the realms of film, but I think the original statement stands. If somebody hasn't seen them, they really haven't missed that much.

Once you've applied that, the game finally understands that you are not hidden in anyway and most functions like adding globals return. At least until the game randomly decides you're hiding again
The game seems to save some values across characters.

E.G. I've put a Character A into hide, swapped to Character B who was not in hide, but appeared hidden. Played Character C who wasn't in hide, and was visible. And only got Character B out of hide by going all the way back and taking Character A out of hide.

After a while it does get confusing.

Jimmy the IT guy says they're overkill, but since AMD was providing them to help make sure the demo ran flawlessly, he wasn't going to complain! I also asked Vince D'Amelio if there were going to be efforts to resolve the ATi issues or if users were SOL due to legacy code. That was when I found out the demo was run on a system with ATi cards.

(Actually, I guess that doesn't directly address the concerns with regard to non-Ultra-mode game settings. Nor does the info that Paragon is working closely with AMD & NVidia to ensure neither system is at a display disadvantage, as presumably that would be geared to the new graphics features.) *shrugs* sorry... didn't think to ask about that.

Also, I found out from TJ that Vince had told him that his AMD/ATi 4850HD 1MB would run all but a few or the Ultra-mode features at maxed out settings. I think he also said the next step up would handle features at maxed out settings. One presumes "handles" means it runs in something other than pathetic frame-rates.
Nice to see I was somewhat correct about the cards that might be needed in another thread...

I mean, out of all the characters in literary history who use pistols, the devs had to go and choose the look the most specific and least adaptable?

Granted, "vanilla" animations arent as fancy, but they allow for a MUCH larger range of characters. THis is actually why i prefer alot of the older less fancy costume options as well. I dont want a Gun-fu pistol set. I want a set that I can use as a mercenary... or as a cowboy... or as a 19th century gentleman hero... or as a grimfaced antihero of the 80's.

The differnt ammo types are great. Have always loved the concept, and Im really glad they went with it. But the animations? No thanks. Why is this so hard to do in MMO's. Its not a terribly hard concept. If i have a gun set, i really only want one thing from it: to shoot. I realize that it might be a bit boring, but if i wanted something fancy, I would have picked a fancy set.

I also realize its a little early to make a rant thread... But those animations looked pretty finalized, and you dont just scrap months worth of work at the drop of a hat.

Honestly, there is very little reason left for me to even consider buying going rogue. I dont care about demon summoning. The rest is a graphics upgrade that I might not be even able to use, and some new storylines.
    Two things:

First: you, and a lot of other posters, seem to be STUCK on the idea that everything that was shown off at HeroCon was ALL THERE IS to Going Rogue.

How many times do we have to say : THE DEVS WERE LIMITED BY MARKETING AND CORPORATE ON WHAT COULD BE SAID before the realization finally sticks?

Yes. There is more to Going Rogue. Yes, more will be revealed. IN TIME. Getting all huffy about it now is a bit like getting all huffy about finding out that you're going to a steakhouse and Prime-Rib is the special, but what you really want is a salad.

Which sorta leads me into point two:

Second: What kind of game is City of Heroes? Is it a simulation of 18th Century Wild West Cowboy Fights? Is it a 19th century Gentleman's dual? Is it a 20th Century FPS?

Noooo. It's not. It's a Comic Book Inspired MMO. Now. I don't read comics, but I do watch a bit of anime and read a bit of manga, and I can tell you that most of the gun-fights portrayed in the likes of Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Outlaw Star, and so on and so forth... are sort of where movies like Ultraviolet and Equilibrium drew their inspiration from. GunGrave, for example, stands as an excellent example of that bullet slinging anime style brought to life in a video game... properly. Devil May Cry, yet another great bullet slinger.

In the aspect of what City of Heroes is, the new Dual Pistol Set fits perfectly into the Comic Book Genre. I'm quite glad they decided to go all John Woo with it, rather than simply remaining with the clunky style of the Master Mind Set.

Transgaming has a new graphics engine rewrite coming up, presumably to be launched under the Cedega 8.x branding. Presumably the OpenGL 3.0 features needed for the new features used in Ultra-Mode will be exposed through the update.

Emp Pulse is for when things could be going wrong. Mind you, I don't use it without some blues in my pocket, but it is certainly useful.
well. to be fair. I only tried it on Test. And honestly I should know better than to judge powers by how they behave on teams I get on test.

Also, I'll admit I'm not the worlds greatest Ice Rad. So if somebody who knows more about the combination says something, or says I'm wrong about playing it, I can't be cocky enough to overlook that.

It's not meant to wipe out mobs, but it does hold them. Why? It's an AoE hold with bonus abbilities. (Huge range, endurance debuff, robot damage) For all that, you lose recovery, but not endurance. Meaning, you still have juice afterwards, it just won't come back on its own for a bit.
I tried it and it just never worked like that for me.

Everytime I fired it off, my end went /zip/ if I did anything else.

edit: ... part of me is now tempted to drop Choking Cloud and take Em Pulse and put those basilisks there...
  23. once again, I add my voice to those who say Both.

There isn't really much in the radiation set that's skippable other than the last two powers, Fallout and em pulse. I'm going to pick on my ice / rad for a minute to explain why. Now, if you haven't played Ice / Rad, it's extremely endurance heavy. I'm not going to say it's the biggest endurance sucker in the game... I don't actually know that for certain... but even with perma-am, running with all my toggles on and trying to control still plows straight through endurance.

When I'm playing my ice / rad, I operate in one of two gameplay modes which depends on whether or not I've got team-mates with strong debuffs.

If I have team-mates with strong debuffs, I'll focus on the control aspect

If I have team-mates without strong debuffs, I'll lay off the mass control and focus more on delivering my debuffs to each target.

My IO goal was to focus on getting as much recharge as possible, with as much endurance recovery as possible, without using purples. (which, at the time, I couldn't afford... and really, even now, unless I emptied out the pockets of ALL my characters on that server, I don't think I could afford).

In order to make my build work, I wound up needing to drop 3 powers from my primary and secondary pools.

I wound up dropping Fallout because although it's a great debuff, it depends on players actually dying in order to work, and sort of depends on enemies being in range. Theoretically, if I was doing my job right, players wouldn't be dying to begin with.

I also dropped Em Pulse. Okay, it's a nuke. Controllers don't often get nukes. I was having enough problems keeping endurance up though... did I really want to take a power that only did 50 damage base against electronic targets only? at the cost of pretty much running me out of endurance? No. couldn't say that I wanted that.

The last power I dropped was Flash Freeze which... I get the point of it as a secondary mob control power... but again, if I was doing my job right as a rad, we'd be into that secondary group pretty quickly anyways... and once another attack goes off, Flash Freeze is useless in the face of the other ice debuffs.

    ***

Now, I can see from a defender or corrupter point of view, the possibility of dropping other powers in the rad set. Their job really isn't to control enemies... just debuff them.

Were I choosing though, Fallout and Em Pulse would be on the list of powers to go long before the others.
  24. somebody was yanking a couple of chains.

If somebody is actually posting a level higher than 50 they probably:
A: Hacked the game client to send false information to the server

    B: found a /really/ obscure bug.
Neither of which would go long without somebody doing a /petition and notifying the gm's.
