There are no such things as upgrades in the Windows World. There are only crossgrades. If you want to upgrade, install a Linux and Get a Mac. And no, this isn't for debate, question. This is stated fact.
Obviously, the original poster has upgraded. However, there are caveats with upgrades. Sometimes software built against legacy platforms won't work, and so yes, sometimes it's worth it to have a legacy platform around to continue to use legacy code.
There are also some cases where some programs are better left to a legacy platform. I happen to be of the opinion that tools like MIDS are among them. I don't like MIDS for a variety of reasons. It's one thing to look at a list of numbers and think "that looks good." It's entirely another thing to actually put those numbers into realistic play. MIDS can tell you everything there is to know about the raw numbers, but it won't tell you one lick about how an avatar plays. It won't tell you what the natural strengths or weaknesses are. It won't tell you what enemies you'll face, nor how to switch up your playing style for the needs of a team. It won't tell you how long you'll have to farm or how many TF's you'll have to run to afford the IO sets you want. It won't tell you what's actually available.
For these and many other reasons, I don't use MIDS, and I'd have a hard time justifying anybody spending time to port the underlying code to a better operating system base, much less maintaining the current lists of enhancement sets.
But... that's just me. Obviously some people find value in the tool. I'm not one of those people. -

Quote:... I really wish I had come up with this analogy for some of the other "oft-requested" brain-dead suggestions being made.Raising the same question over and over again does not necessarily "motivate the vendor" to do anything. Should I keep complaining to my bank and the ATM manufacturer that I can't play classic Battlezone on their ATM? It's likely possible - simple screen, it's got a computer built in, buttons that can take left and right (and fire) input, so why shouldn't they do it if I keep nagging them? The program itself is ancient, and probably wouldn't take more than a few kb of space.
So I should keep nagging them about this, right? Keeping the vendor motivated and all that?

I suspect this is related to how the game currently handles transparency effects and water effects. I also suspect that some of this behavior will be fixed in the Ultra Mode graphics update.

Couple of good cracks on what Rep is for, what it's good for, and what it's not so good for.
There are a couple of caveats to using rep though. While you, as a player, can't see who left rep, the moderators can. The moderators also have removed rep that contained insulting comments, inflammatory comments, obscene comments, and vulgar comments. So it's not really a safe way to grief somebody in private. Too many insults through the rep system, and there could be a ban-hammered response.
Also, rep as a farming tool is somewhat... well. If you click on the name of somebody whose posting you have an option to view their profile.
This link, for example, is the profile of Back Alley Brawler : http://boards.cityofheroes.com/member.php?u=418012
Under the profile you'll find a Statistics Tab, and in the statics tab an option to search for all the posts a player has made. This link, for example, is all the posts Back Alley Brawler has made: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/searc...archid=1191089
In practical way then, you can find out whether or not somebody has posted in a rep farming thread.
***
My own personal viewpoint is that the forum moderators would be better off enabling the rep system in a different way. The example I've used before is the forums at www.mepislovers.org which also uses vBulletin.
The forums there are set to display the names of people who have left rep, positive or negative, as well as allow players to visibly Thank various posts... like this one : http://mepislovers.org/forums/showth...742#post198742
We found that being able to Thank Posts successfully cut down on the number of Quoted For Truth and This Post! responses. We also found that by listing the names of people who left rep, either way, prevented griefing as well.
The hope is that the moderators will at one point re-examine the use of the forums reputation and rating system and see how other sites have handled the same software solution. I know the way MepisLovers is set up works. I think it would work here to. -
Saw this idea from Great Beyond:
Quote:While some of this is technically in CoH since... well since I've been playing... there are various civilians on the streets getting robbed, mugged, soul sucked out, and so on and so forth... there's never really any pay-off, other than the inf / prestige from dropping the baddies in question. I dimly recall back in I4, I5, and I6 that a successfully rescued victim could drop an Inspiration for the hero responsible for rescue...Actually, there was one thing I found that I wished CoH would adapt - things to do in the street. There was that bit in the tutorial where you can find a lost cat and have to return it to their owner? That was kind of fun - so I wish there were cats in trees you had to rescue, random people needing help with minor things - color that doesn't really change the course of the world, but helps to flesh out the background.
Sometimes I'd think it'd be nice if some more work was done on these incidental encounters... Like rescuing somebody's kitten... pulling people OUT of a burning building the Hellions have set on fire...
Thoughts Anybody? -
Quote:em. I think you'll find that questions about games switching to OpenCL are coming from MOST gaming websites, not just Mac / Linux centered ones, and it's coming from not just gamers, from from the people who actually make the hardware.Paragon Studios, composed of former Cryptic employees.
All rumors I've seen on Going Rogue and openCL seem to be very, very vague and coming from generally mac-centric websites.
AMD and Intel, for example, don't like how Nvidia disables PhysX unless you use an Nvidia card to render the graphics. That only really affects ATi users right now, but Intel is getting into the performance market with Larrabee.
The implication from HeroCon is that since Going Rogue's demonstration was run on Crossfired RadeonHD 4870x2 GPU's, the engine revision for Going Rogue has already been switched from PhysX to OpenCL. However, since the Going Rogue demo at Hero Con didn't actually show off any in-game physics, just the non-physics based graphical effects, one could also argue that the game client was simply running without hardware accelerated physics.
We really don't know.
And yes, multiple people have been pressing Paragon Studios for a while for a firm answer on what the plans are for accelerated physics in the game, if there are any plans to focus on that feature for CoH.
***
Also: Intel owns Havok, and the Havok-FX varient, the version developed by Havok when they were independent for GPU acceleration, was dropped. Intel is heavily pushing OpenCL as a solution for hardware accelerated physics. -

Quote:what does that Code say? Does it say Trial Code?Hmm, i don't think i have one, can't find it.
My serial code is on the back of my keyboard commands paper, it also has a Hero/Villains archetypes explanation on it.
Is there a code inside or on the CD case that came with the box? -
Quote:HeroSide:Hello, i am new here, and this probably seems like a noobish question, but where are the locations of the tailors?
Level 20 Tailor Contact: Steel Canyon
Level 30 Tailor Contact: Independence Port
Level 40 Tailor Contact: Founders Falls
VillainSide:
Level 20 Tailor Contact: Cap au Diable
Level 30 Tailor Contact: Cap au Diable
Level 40 Tailor Contact: St. Martial
Neutral Zones:
Non-Contact Tailor: Pocket D Tiki Room
Non-Contact Tailor: Rikti War Zone
***
Contact Tailors let you take missions for an additional costume slot at each specified level. The Neutral Zone tailors only allow you to change costume parts. -
I'd doubt this method for one reason... It would be an active punishment for switching sides.
While it was stated at HeroCon that there would be something done to reward those who stayed Hero Only or stayed Villain Only, I somewhat doubt side specific enhancements as a method of reward / punishment. -

Once you log in, you can buy the game from the store and it will automatically apply to the account you are logged in with. -
no.
Those who go into hide go into hide because they don't want to be seen.
What you're suggesting is to say that players should not be allowed to be hidden.
***
There's also the PvP angle here. I just have to ask a question: Just how much traffic do you think the PvP zones get to begin with?
The underlying idea that you display is that people actually are going into the PvP zones, but hidden, and you want to be able to know just how many people are in the zones.
Well, there's a two fold problem to this. First, the forums here give a grossly distorted view of the size of the PvP player base. While Cryptic / NCSoft / Paragon Studio's have been, are, and probably will continue to be, coy about the real numbers, we do know that they are low. As in way less than 5% player pop low. As in way less than 2% player pop low. Are you sure you actually want a command that will let players figure out just how low the PvP player pop really is?
The second problem is Planetside. Several years ago Planetside's /search system allowed players of one empire to see if anybody from an opposing empire was on a cont. The SOE developers figured out that this was just bad game design. Period. Full Stop. No Argument. This is not a debate point. This is established fact. It is bad game design. So I really don't care if you don't like that the /search system doesn't work as you think it should, that it doesn't display enemy information and troop strength.
Part of the challenge of a PvP zone in a game that has a PvP population is that you don't know who you are up against. You don't know who you are going to face. You don't know what assets the enemy has. You don't know what kind of force can be brought against you. Which means you have to stay on your toes and be ready for anything. Which means you have to stand ready to... I dunno... PLAY THE GAME. -
Quote:Not quite. I just ran through the system. If I remember correctly, when you purchase a code online, you need to go to your main NCSoft account (the master account) and apply the serial code to your account, and then you can play. You can get to your main account here. Hope that helps!
In order to make a purchase from the NCSoft Store, you have to be logged into an account.
So whichever account Pibe was logged in on is the account that the serial code was AUTOMATICALLY APPLIED TO.
So if he bought the game while logged in as his new TRIAL ACCOUNT, then his NEW TRIAL ACCOUNT already has the game applied. He would have never seen the serial code.
He would only have seen the serial code if he had purchased a retail box.
I suspect Pibe, that if you log in at: https://secure.ncsoft.com/cgi-bin/plaync_login.pl
With your new trial account, you'll find that under Accounts it will say something like:
City of Heroes® / City of Villains® (your login name) Standard

1. Fat heroes/villains.
Quote:2. Children.
I'm unsure of the reasoning behind the game not having any children. I'm sort of thinking rating reasons, but it could just be the devs weren't comfortable with the idea of kids getting smacked around by evil villains.

Going Rogue's Ultra Mode.

MM Clown henchmen
Providing that the power change technology eventually extends to Masterminds, these costume change types might be / will be moot points.

Quote:different idle poses
Quote:Knife Throwing powerset
I think the developers have commented before that throwing knives weren't exactly... unique... enough to draw a full tier 9 set out. So you get a couple of sets that have throwing knives, and an origin (natural) that also gives you a small temp power of throwing knives.
Quote:Interact/Blowup enviroment NOT just punching parking meters
Quite simply real Geometry Modification would blow the processing budget out of the water. There's no way it would work within the current minimum computer hardware and network communication specifications. Yes, it would be really cool to have my Stone Tank lumbering down the street on speedboost plow THROUGH walls instead of having to around them... but it's not worth implementing a feature that would limit the ability of a large percentage of users.
This is one of the key points about Going Rogue's Ultra Mode. It can be enabled separately from the gameplay, changing what you see, but not what you play.
Quote:Run on water/up buildings with SS
As far as running UP buildings... don't get your hopes up there. This would also require some engine modifications.

well, yes.
First method is to buy a server transfer, they cost $10.00 in the store.
Second way is to play the market. Pick something really cheap that nobody's bidding on (like an SO, DO, or TO), or wants, put it up for some ludicrous price that you want to transfer. Then buy that item with the character who has the influence. -
Quote:you can find groups that roleplay on multiple servers, such as the Girls of Nukem High, Feline Foundation Z, and Dolls.I'm asking this here since I feel I wont be flamed/trolled for doing so. I'm new to City of Heroes/Villains, I am currently on Trial, if I like the game I'll stay but so far it runs better on my computer than Champions. Now, as a new player I have no clue where to go to search for roleplay or what server I am most likely to find it on. I checked the roleplay supergroup thread and it looks like Roleplaying is mainly done on the EU servers, is anyone able to tell me otherwise? I have 6+ years of RP and I mainly come to games searching for roleplay.
However, the unofficial roleplaying server (and you have no idea how much I hate that term) is the Virtue Server.
Far as I see it, if I'm playing a game where everybody's dressed up in tight's prancing around, I'll stay in character where-ever I feel like staying in character. -
/signed as well.
The current in-game help system that talks about macro's is about as useful as a kin who didn't take ID, SB, Transference, and Fulcrum Shift.
However, since a new experience is planned for new players in Going Rogue, maybe it'd make more sense to stick Bob the Binder over in Praetoria. -
Echoing what Hera said.
Granite Armor has some strict penalties associate with it's ability to take damage. You trade off movement speed, recharge speed, and damage. Without significant and expensive IO work you'll need a Kinectics around just to move and attack normally.
A problem, as I see it, is that too many players hit 32, get granite, and promptly drop all of their other armors and take more attacks, pool powers, or the like.
However, if you keep all of the defensive armors, take weave, and horde merits you can 5-enhance cap on the Luck of The Gamber 7.5 charge speed and Gift of the Ancients 7.5% run speed procs, which will go a long ways towards making Granite less unbearable.
If you frakenslot right, you can still remain survivable without external buffs in the default armors as well. Spend enough cash / merits and you can get Earth's Embrace close to permanent outside of granite... and a 3k hp cap with a 50-55hp per second regen rate and 30% defense is enough for most team situations.

This came about from a global-chat conversation about the Halloween event this year.
Short version is... I just can't get... excited about the Banner event. It's a cool new use of tech, but the end-fight is just disappointing. A complex and tactical strategic battle at 4 map points devolves into a simple GM beat-down.
In a global channel we started batting around a few ideas to make the banner payoff more meaningful.
Mod 1: More GM'sInstead of a solo GM from the random pool, spawn multiple GM's, similar to the Chaos Event from the 5th anniversary.
Mod 2: GM at Each BannerAfter the banners have been defeated, a Giant Monster spawns at each Banner Point and attempts to rebuild the banner. So players must travel to each banner again and take out the GM's.
Mod 3: Hamidon ResponseThe Hamidon has taken notice of the Evil tainting the earth in the Zone and has pushed through into the Zone to rid the zone of the taint. Unfortunately, he's still rather mad at you. So the players need to gather and take down a mitoless or mito-lite Hamidon core.

gonna have a hard-time outside of the premium guys you listed that will put that combo together.
Also, even if you don't run multiple-monitors, dual GPU's can still be very valuable. Crossfired or SLI'd cards can give anywhere from a 30%-90% performance increase.

As far as liquid cooling goes.. yes / no / not really.
Yes, you should be wary of liquid cooling. They do require extra maintenance compared to air-cooling. You will need to keep an eye on the reservoir and make sure you treat any additional water with an anti-rust / anti-fungal solution.
No, you shouldn't be wary of liquid cooling. It's not really that complex, and if you buy from a vendor that put the system together for you, you can be pretty sure that the unit was tested leak-free. It's a great way to increase the cooling potential of a computer system while lowering the noise. There is a trade-off though. While the processor will certainly run cooler, unless you've also got the Northbridge and GPU's cooled through the same block, they'll actually run hotter due to lack of additional air movement in the case.
not really: Unless you intend to run some serious overclocks, Liquid Cooling isn't really all that great. If you just intend to run stock clock speeds or low overclocks, Air Cooling will do just fine. -
BaB's already said that he wasn't going to do the Doves in the actual game release because it was a head-ache he didn't want to deal with.
I think it is a good question though since the Malta DID get the new floating gun-turret... one of the few times that a player base changed carried over to NPC's. Everytime I run a Manti I hear grumbling about Paragon Protectors still having the old MoG instead of the new player based MoG.
So there's precedent set both ways for the devs to either give the Malta new animations or keep the old sets. -
Quote:The same goes for the Cedega client on Linux.
The funny thing about being a CoH for Mac user is that the game developers are Windows based. Us Mac users, in some cases, might know more about our Macs than they do.
What that means is, we have to think preventatively. When you see a new build of the Mac client on the Training Room, test the hell out of it. Send bug reports when you see bugs, don't depend on someone else reporting it. Pretend that you're *always* beta-testing the Mac client, and every bit of information you can provide, any help you can lend, may be useful.
I know it's not our "job", but while the Windows user base is like the population of a small city, the Mac user base is more like a small town. We all have to work together to make it work. And the more we work at it, the more the devs understand how it works - we're making them experts!
The Mac and Linux clients share the same underlying engine, and any and all information that flows back to Transgaming aids in improving the client for everybody else. It also might sound a bit daft, but if you're running both Cedega and the Mac Cider client and you find a bug, report it both through the in game /bug system, and take a minute to drop by http://www.cedega.com/support/ and leave a support ticket.
