To make the point I'll use an exaggeration. There's a difference between being a female gamer... and being a SucideGirl. No I'm not linking the site. If you don't know what it is, I'm not going to explain it.

In the same way, there is a difference between not telling somebody your gender, and showing your gender off.

I seriously have to ask a question: Short of intentional "E.R.P." and I'll put quotes on that, why exactly would anybody go around telling people something to the effect of "I have Bewbs in Real Life!"? The flip side of that coin can be asked as well: Why exactly would anybody go around telling people something to the effect of "I have 12inch long... you know what goes here"

If you want to tell somebody your gender, hey, that's fine. That's your choice.

And yes, I am intentionally avoiding the elephant in the corner waving the flag that says "Video Games Dominated by Teenagers and Young Adults"

    Anyways.

I tend to agree with Nalrok's sentiments, although not the verbiage of those sentiments. Most of the changes made to the game since NCSoft bought City of Heroes out have been logically explained, yes even the I13 revamp.

For the most part the enemy factions typically are not revamped or updated. Off the top of my head I can only remember the Rikti receiving an artwork revamp. However, even after the revamp, there still was a clear visual link between the "new" Rikti and the old Rikti costumes.

The problem that a large number of players seem to be having with the proposed costumes; and yes after Positron's post in that long thread those costumes have now gone from "done deal" to "proposed" whether or not the art-team likes it; is that there is no visual link or reference between the new costumes and the old costumes.

Should the players have been notified about this change, say having the concept art made available to look at BEFORE the developers sunk resources into making the costumes?

For something that is this big a design break, Yes. The players should have been involved at some level.

My suspicion is that if the new costumes had been designed using references from the pre-existing costumes, there would not be such an immediate and volatile reaction to the proposed costumes.

    Quote:
The art team should not be beholden to vetting the community for changes. Nor should any other department
Unfortunately, they are. All of the Paragon Studio employees are beholden to the subscribers. If the subscribers are not happy paying subscribers, Paragon Studio Employees don't get a paycheck.

The question here is: Will this change actually affect gameplay?

No. It won't. It's just a visual aesthetic.

Will this change affect subscription levels?

Probably not. I haven't seen anybody threatening to cancel their subscriptions if the proposed costume change is finalized.

What would be the fallout if the proposed design is finalized as is?

Lots of whiny and grumpy players... and this hasn't even reached the bulk of the player-base yet. We've already witnessed the sheer negative reaction from players on the forum. What's going to happen when the bulk of the game gets a load of the proposed designs?

The reality for any MMO is that the subscriber base has roots in word-of-mouth. Just look what happened to Sony Online Entertainment when they started mucking about whole-sale with their games. Does NCSoft / Paragon Studios really need that kind of negative publicity coming out about City of Heroes.

What exactly would the ramifications be of a large number of subscribers chatting about what was "Done to the Circle" and how the art team just didn't have a clue.

Now, I don't have the answers to those questions. I don't think anybody does.

What I do know is that NCSoft / Paragon Studios have some difficult questions to deal with now... and those questions are not going to go away.

You don’t lose any of the stats associated with your character (Prestige earned, join date, and the like), but you will not be able to join an additional one. SG’s are not going to be made cross-faction. If you have business you need to deal with your current SG before you switch, get it done before hand. This needs to be made crystal clear in game, and we are working to do just that.

If you are reporting a crash or a bug with the driver in this thread, please list the hardware that you have.

If you are not sure what hardware you have, GPUZ will allow you to post a window snap: http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/

Crossfire currently does not support the OpenGL 3.x targets used by City of Heroes.

All I can tell you is that OpenGL 3.x Crossfire support is on AMD's to-do list, but there isn't a date set.

Your monitor size does not matter.

What matters is your monitor RESOLUTION.

Just to give you an idea here, Newegg.com currently lists 50 different monitors with a screen size of 24".

Of those monitors 36 have a recommended resolution of 1920*1080, while 14 have a recommended resolution of 1920*1200.

Just because that is the resolution the monitor says it can display, DOES NOT MEAN that it is the resolution the monitor actually displays. Cases in point, I had a Scepter 23" monitor. While the monitor said it could accept 1080p ... it's actual resolution was... 1366 x 768. I currently have a Westinghouse SK-32H240S. The monitor says it will accept 1080(i), but it's actual resolution is... 1366 x 768.

I hope this explains why telling us the monitor size... tells us absolutely nothing at all.
Thing is, the resolution City of Heroes Supports... does not matter. City of Heroes supports resolutions based on the information passed to it by your display driver.

Here I've told CoH that the maximum resolution is 1680*1050. In the user-interface options I have options up to 1680*1050

Here I've told CoH that the maximum resolution is 1920*1200. In the user-interface I now have options up to 1920*1200.

The secondary factor to resolution is refresh rate. Now, refresh rate doesn't really matter on most LCD monitors.

However, depending on the physical connection of your computer to the monitor, be it VGA, DVI, Component, HDMI, or DisplayPort, the refresh rate can become a barrier.

My normal monitor resolution here is 1920*1200 which has a listed refresh rate of 60hz.

If I drop my monitor's resolution to 1680*1050 I now have options for 60hz and 50hz:

Going back to the hardware itself... Although I've set a 50hz refresh rate in the software, that particular setting isn't passed back along to the game:

    * * *

So, how do you fix your problem?

Well, first thing you need to do is get the specifications for your own monitor.

What resolution(s) does your monitor support?

What refresh rate(s) does your monitor support?

With this information in hand you can set about fixing the problem.

    TweakCoh is one option.

You can also force the game to launch in safe-mode. On the crap-ware NCSoft Launcher it's an option you can set.

Safe-mode will force you into a lower resolution, allowing you to get into the game, and then set the resolution / refresh rate for your monitor.

    Underwater maps?

The concept was canned by C.Bruce.

To date the current development team have not indicated whether or not they want to attempt to work on any underwater based content.

One thing MB doesn't seem to have is a firewall. With their superior malicious item database and realtime scanning would that be a problem? Or a problem small enough that Windows Firewall could help?
Software firewalls do not work on Microsoft Windows Operating Systems. All a firewall does is "prevent" traffic from going in and out of ports. It does nothing to prevent legit traffic from entering or exiting.

Most malicious software attacks are initiated through trusted or legit connections. Very, and I mean very, few crackers are going to take the time to run an entire port-scan and figure out which ports you may or may not have open.

Basically, it's like this: If I'm at your software-firewall on any shipping version of Microsoft Windows, I've already compromised your networking stack and I'm only at your Firewall just to turn it off or open up a port.

If you want to protect yourself from port-scanners, get a router.

    Newegg Wireless
    Newegg Wired

Network Address Translation (N.A.T.) alone will prompt most malicious crackers to go find a different computer to look at, never-minding the control and options that Firmware's such as DD-WRT can give you.

    "Seems" can be deceiving.

CoH's performance profile largely depends on what you are doing and what graphics options you have enabled.

With the OpenGL 1.4 Shader path and low particle options CoH isn't exactly all that CPU heavy. You can still get away with a playable 10fps or there abouts on 1ghz AthlonXp's

With Ultra-Mode graphics options enabled that performance profile can change dramatically. The shadow maps and particle effects can chew up processing power pretty quickly.
