    It doesn't read right...

"I'm sorry to inform you or exist..."

Grammatically, you'd probably want that to read more like this:

"I'm sorry to exist, and also sorry to inform you..."

But... I *suppose* it could work either way... I'm not real sure why you'd want them to say that though...

/what do you mean, 'that's not what you meant?'
  2. Well, yeah, I grok that. Perhaps a pingplotter to the server where the files are hosted might be in order to find the spikey server causing the hiccups. Anyone know the IP address?

/I'm a little lazy... it's late or I'd go look it up somehow.
//Probably with with a network tracing utility I have, watch the packets.
  3. Just for numbers sake, I tested using Speeguide.net/hostkitty.net and got a download speed of 15586 kbps down (~15.59 Mbps, 1903 KB/s)

Now, I run a gutted Co* install, no piggs whatsoever, basically just the updater and it says I'll have to wait 1.75 hours to get 2.7G at around 570K/sec, give or take 12K/sec.

I dunno what that means except that I have teh AWESOME cable modem and that's about all I got. It also appears that, unless I'm totally reading things wrong (and it's kinda likely) that even though I *could* get 1903K/s, I'm only allowed 1/4 that from the game hosting server.

So... I dunno what else to say about it, but I'm being stifled by NCSoft. *shakes fist*

/sorry if that sounded like I wuz rubbin' it in... I mean no harm... but I loves me mah Comcast in Houston.
//it settled down to about 470K/sec now and 1.5 hours to go.
///then I canceled it and restarted and it's around 22M downloaded, 1:50 to go, 433K/sec.
    ////bounces around a little, doesn't it.?
  4. In the sticky about common solutions are the IP addresses of the servers. Download PingPlotter Freeware and plug those IPs in on a continuous 1 second repeating ping trace and you'll probably find the problem server in your communications path between yourself and the server.
  5. In addition to the above, which I say you *must* do first, using MSConfig turn these off

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [workflow] D:\installs\workflow.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BJCFD] C:\Program Files\BroadJump\Client Foundation\CFD.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [FreeRAM XP] "C:\Program Files\YourWare Solutions\FreeRAM XP Pro\FreeRAM XP Pro.exe" -win
    O4 - Startup: Cosmic Scenes.lnk = C:\Program Files\Cosmic Scenes\CosmicScenes.exe

    and retest.
  6. I would be very curious as to how a Dxdiag log looks like for your system. Methinks it may be in there we find an answer... maybe.
  7. What's changed since December 08? Hm. Hard to really say... I didn't program it.

On the gaming side of things we've got the Mission Architect that probably adds quite a bit to the overall program needs, as well as even more costumes... and who knows what all the background stuff that all was affected/added to get the MA in.

Whatever else the rest of the posters since my earlier post said is pretty much the issue(s). Basically, more ram, of course, will help a lot, but the game is always moving and changing. If Posi's last hint is any indication, I imagine that the memory needs are going to go up yet again to handle the various people's different power customizations.

Why, you ask? **Everything** that is in the map has to be known about in the client computer. That costs memory to know where a thing is, X-Y-Z in the map, and it's orientation (probably a vector?) relative to the ground position, and which skin(s) it's using. That was just the first few Issues.

Then they added the RagDoll stuff as of I6, and that adds the relative positioning of 9 different main body parts (2 arms, 2 legs, each with two segments, so that's 8, plust the torso) all in *relation* to the main position of the character (it's feet... anything else isn't correctly scalable for other reasons/needs in the game.) And multiply times every single entity in the game that has ragdoll.

And *every* issue inevitably winds up with some feature that has to be accounted for... Arena, PvP, Wentworths, and lately the MA. Some of which are dealt with immediately, some not, all of which will cost memory at some point, and some of it *relative* to your position in the map, even... Not to mention the various additions to skins and now varieties of weapons each Issue seems to get. And now colors on top of all that, and probably another few items of costuming.

**ALL** of which will require *your* computer to load and deal with in some way. All the time, and swapping in/out as needed...

And... well... that pretty much sums up about what I know about what's been added. I probably got some of it slightly (or grossly, depending) wrong. In no way do I know exactly everything in there... but as a former programmer, I certainly get all the possible variables that need to be dealt with locally. When you get down to it... it's amazingly complex, and amazing it runs at all.

I hope that helps in some way... Even one key item in a new Issue can screw up what used to be a perfectly working computer in Co*. Like I6 did to many.
  8. Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz
    Memory: 768MB RAM
Page File: 330MB used, 3395MB available
    And the Radeon 9800 Pro.

All these are the factors in your problems. Co* is a *big* program. And it's very detailed. You basically need a new computer.

    1) The Pentium 4, while not a slouch, is a single core, and Co* definitely can use two cores. Hyperthreading helps, but is NOT a substitute for a core.

    2) The low amount of main memory is a problem. The operating system and background programs will take up somewhere around 300-500MB (as a guess... y'all don't correct me, k?), leaving Co* with the remainder. As Co* itself can use up 1MB or more in stuff... you are woefully shy of required memory, and will require swappage to the disk...

3)... and while the 3395 available is nice, it's probably an expandable page file, not set in stone, and that can hurt performance in this case even more. You probably at this point need a full defrag. Ultimate defragger can do this.

    4) and finally, that video card, while not terrible (and I mean terrible in the case that a new 2010 Mustang GT has really good performance, a 2010 Fusion is not terrible) it's probably time for a new video card. As Co* also has it's... quirks, it may be a better idea to look into a new NVidia x6xx or better card (meaning 9600, 9800, 260, that kind of thing).

Which, by the time you buy all these... maybe it's better off you put the money into a new computer.

Co* is a *hog*. I use it to kill computers. If the computers run Co* for 20 minutes, they pass.

Your machine would *pass*... but it would be horribly bad experience.

At the very least... you need a minimum of 2G of main memory. Perhaps that can get you by in the meantime.
  9. That HJT log is jacked up. Are you running as an admin or as some protected account? That is *really* weird looking... NO startup programs?! NO BHOs or DPFs!?

    /Inconceivable! - Vizzini
  10. Yes. Read the stickies if you've not done so. There's one for ATI issues specifically, and then another for Vista issues specifically. And then there's this one:
    http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showf...=0#Post3760966

Which describes a lot of other fixes and most importantly how to post up a CoHHelper and Hijack This log, which is going to be needed most by the denizens here.

    Thanks!
  11. Can you take a couple of screen shots of the chat window before and after yo press enter? That might help us a little bit...

/Thought you peeps knew it's an open invite.
  14. Now as to the problem, other questions I have:

Anyone? What's with the Crash Report saying "Not Found!" in regards to the many DX files above? I find that... odd.

Don't suppose you're running a dual monitor setup are you? (This is where I like the DXDiag logs better... maybe a lot of extras, but I know I'm gettin' what I need... Or am I insulting Zloth and the CoH Helper?)

edit: Aha! I knew I saw something there... bet the sound part of Co* is crashing then. It's DX.
  15. Wow. You've got a lot goin' on. Hm. Here's what I'd be turning off via MSConfig at the very least. Some you'll notice are Logitech things. I'm sure that you want them on, but we're testing here. Try to run it without and then add them back in.

Now in the Hijack This, I'm probably killing these, you ***YOU*** must decide this for yourself. At the very least, I'm uninstalling the things. You really should pick *one* toolbar, and take the others out.

Now, that's the cleanup post... I'm not saying it will help, but it won't hurt, and will cut down on the things the computer is being asked to do... which may be all the problem that is going on here.

/wonders what the 6 Internet Explorers running is about... but hey, it's your computer...
  16. Won't matter in Co*, it's an OpenGL game.

If you're playing a DX game... The DX10 will make it prettier and stuff, mostly in a lot of different little ways (more detailed leaves, smoke, reflections, etc), but may slow it down in frames, compared to the DX9, depending on what you have turned on. but that's all theoretical math and logical stuff, and will definitely depend on the game you're playing.

    /YMMV.
    /LOLWTFOMGBBQ!
  17. Might also want to post up a HijackThis log file, just in case there's something running causing it.

That it runs in safe mode is slightly telling... In safe mode, have you tried windowed mode to see if it runs that way?
  18. Vista is a secretive little beast, and those unknowns and missing are due to it's disallowing information retrievals and masking file locations, respectively. They're there, it's fine... I ignore them now, it's what the files *are* that's more important.

In regards to the problem... The machine ought to rock, but it doesn't. The other machine's video card and chipset might be in order, as well as the processor. Don't suppose you can post the same logs as you did for this new machine, can you? It would help in comparing what's going on.

However, I can say this: The *less* you have going on in the background (Itunes, Antivirus, notifiers...) the more time the cores will have to deal with Co*. Might want to disable some stuff via MSConfig, perhaps.

  20. The real question is this: As much as it is complained about... it's still here. After years of it, it's still here. Why?

If they have to actually *pay* for the accounts they're spamming with... Accounts that will fairly quickly, one would assume, be banned because of the activity... it seems like that might not be a breadwinner idea.

Is it because they are superfunded by (the game what's name shall not be mentioned) and others that they advertise on? I.e., this is a money loser, in reality, but because they make so much more (and some players work multiple games) off the other games, it doesn't matter?

Or is it possible that as much as this is complained about, we're the 10%ers. I.e., we are the squeaky wheel, but the rest of the populace goes to these websites and buys, therefore funding the problem?

I dunno myself. I doubt anyone except those who use the 'service' and those who run it do. But they're still here for a reason.
  21. If you know you could do that with a healthy system, then there's no reason you can't do it, if you can get it into safe mode, unless that method doesn't work in safe mode, like so many other things in XP.

Frankly, I've never done it that way, as I've got a library of the various OSs I may need to fix other's computers... So I really can't say 100%.
  22. I enjoy reading these advertisements, and the many ways that they use user names and global names to circumvent the system's restrictions. Tenacious little buggers, they've almost endeared themselves to me.

And yet, I just keep slapping the 'spam' button, and they'll never, ever, see any activity towards them from me other that this action.

    Moniter issue

Any particular reason you upgraded? If not, maybe roll the drivers back?
  24. houtex

    Not even sure ?

This is a laptop, I'm guessing, and most laptop drivers are not updated by the manufacturers unless there is a *severe* error that requires it.

It's possible that the Intel drives might fix it, but you may have to hunt about the internet to get it completely figured out. Many times the manufacturer drivers are tweaked just for them. Hopefully, the Intel ones will just work.

Also, is it possible that you didn't do a driver cleaner/sweeper on the laptop before you installed the drivers? Sometimes old drivers can linger when new ones are installed...

OK, that is kewl! How does promotion of an arc qualify as an event and how can I do something like this with my arcs?

The below flier is posted on behalf of the player organization promoting the event.

It's a canned response, copied and pasted. Tis not an event, except for the fact that it's eventful that the poster was posted, as the posters that aren't admins can't post posters...
