Open the computer and have a look inside. Model numbers of both the motherboard and the sound card can be found printed on them, and used on the respective websites of the manufacturers to find them. If even the manufacturer isn't known, as might be the case of the mobo, googling the model number of the motherboard will likely reveal the maker... and maybe even the page with the drivers from that maker's website.

Well, either the board or your browser is at fault for allowing such a huge avatar to be even pointed to without testing it's size first. Therefore, also obviously, something has to be done. Well, you are welcome! Glad it worked and you're back in!

Keep the CoHUpdater.exe on your desktop. Alternately, you can redownload a copy from here: http://download.cityofheroes.com/US/CoH_NA_Setup.exe, and put it on your desktop.

Search for and rename or kill outright all other CoHUpdater.??? on the system, both drives.

Reboot the machine.

Re-run the desktop CoHUpdater.exe and all *should* be well... but I've been fooled before.

The university is likely not allowing the updater through. You may have to try different ports. It's in the stickies somewhere, try the 'Read This!' link below for some help...

But the likely answer is to get a different ISP, or get the universty to unblock the ports.

As far as the ping plotter issue, what you're looking for is a huge spike. For example, most of the pings are probably less than 100 (maybe... depends). But one of them might be huge, like 600 or something like that. That would be the problem child, and that's where you need to attack.

Ruby Dawn = Cerise Dawn. They're sisters, one's good, one's evil, so it's sorta the same. Rose is... well, she's undecided and waiting in the wings. Think Charmed, after Pru was offed...

Homeslicer would be... hm... maybe... no that's stupid. I think he'd just be Evil Robot Homeslicer.

Total Dependent (rad/rad defender who has about 0 offense) would become Soverignette, I suppose, but I have no idea what to make her with, power wise...

On the villain side, Jerry the Deathclown would become Nathan the Deathclown. Wait... My bad. Jerry the Defeatclown.

All the rest... be difficult to come up with anything.

Which is why I say it won't matter who among us has it... unless it's delivered on a DVD, it won't help.

For all of you having connection issues: ISP type and brand please. If it's dialup or satellite or cell phone based, there are always going to be issues. Try running multiple updaters (up to 20) to see if you get one that connects.

You might also search the forums for Ping Plotter and how to use that to ping the servers and find a bad 'hop' between you and the game servers.

Question: Does the forum stop loading because of this thing? I can't see it, because I don't have dialup.

What happens to the forums, Father? Isn't there a setting in the IE/Firefox/Opera/Chrome/?? browser where the rest of the page loads regardless of the pictures? Placeholders? Something like that? Wouldn't that help?

Howdy all. My first foray into here... be gentle...

So I go in and run an MA story. I'm running through it, but get defeated. I was tired anyway, so instead of going to the AE hospital thing, I just leave the character in the mission, in the MA task force of one, and exit the game. I go to bed, sleep, get up, eat, go to work, lunch, more work, come home, eat, go in game...

Whereupon, I log in with that same character what's been defeated... and he's flopped down by the data stream (I think that's it's name... the big column of light you click on to go in?)... he's defeated.

Which makes... well, no sense, really. I got beat in a simulation... does that mean I have to be dead on the outside too? Of course, there's that whole "die in game, die in real life" thing that it could be... so, ok, we'll just let that one slide as a philosophical issue that has no real good answer, save one: It's the way the game is. Deal.

Alright, dealing. Whereupon I click on 'Go to Hospital.'

Now, before you read on... given the parameters, what should be the action the game performs for this action?

If you thought "send him to the AE building's 'hospital', well, I would have agreed with you.

But no, it sent me to the (in this case) AP main hospital. Which, with a level 1, is a bit of a walk back to AE...

I will admit, after writing this, I see the other philosophical issue... I stayed in mission, defeated, then left. Of course the data stream reconstituted me after 15 minutes, when the screen saver kicked in, and as I was defeated in mission, sure enough, it spat me out defeated.

But... IMO, it should have spit me out... IN THE AE Hospital... and alive. I'd just have wound up there as a matter of the logic of the situation: I was going to press the 'Go to Hospital' button anyway, if I'd stayed in game, and since I had no wakies. Why it spits me out of the data stream and then sends me to the regular hospital... well, it's just not quite right, ya ask me.

But hey. I am just venting a little bit I suppose. I found it off-putting, and not logical at all. Not to mention the trudge back...

at 10:27, in Victory, I got a ping of 220, and I've been in for 15 minutes. Just lettin' y'all know.

Btw, if you can't send yours, I doubt that any of ours will meet with any sort of success...

If it's a size thing, you can use a free uploading site *somewhere* to send it... just password it, k?

Not that I condone this action, mind, if it's against the rules, I'm just saying that as a file transfer process possibility, that's one.

Well, no it really does sound like the problem. I don't know how you've determined it's not.

And that's not to say that your internet connection is specifically the issue... but it could be that, or it could be somewhere between you and the servers.

I'd be trying a one at a a time thing... meaning, pick a computer, and have it be the sole user of the internet, as directly as possible. Remove the router, if it's separate, from the situation, and re-diagnose.

You can also find a post or two regarding the use of Ping Plotter Freeware and the server IPs to see if you can find a bad server between you and the game servers.

You might also try taking out or turning off McAfee completely.

And I dunno what's going on with these...

But all those blank ones are, near as I remember, not right, and may be causing you that black updater issue.

In 3 years, a lot of dust can accumulate in the heatsink of the 6800. Have you looked at that?

Also, while the system is running, does the fan work on the thing? I'm assuming there's a fan... some didn't have one.

It just sounds more like a heat issue, or possibly just age... I don't see anything *overly* related to the problem in your logs up there... Of course, others will have a look and point something out I missed, maybe...

Make sure you do a driver sweep or driver clean after uninstalling the old ones first...

... but he's working on it?
