  2. That whole deal with the weirdo computer you have is the most likely problem... it's giving you fits with video, what's stopping it from giving you fits with the networking?

Even at that, I think I'd rather have a stable computer than that flake monster. No offense, of course, if it works for you...

Also, it would highly explain the Co* problems vs the (the game what's name shall not be mentioned)'s ability to not give you problems... seeing as how Co* is about 10 times or more the program than that other one.

I've said it before, Co* is my gold standard to break computers. If a computer run Co* for 20 minutes, even just standing still in Grandville, then it passes, because Co* can usually break a machine in 5 minutes, easily. (The game what's name shall not be mentioned) is not nearly the monster to a computer that Co* is. Not Flight Simulator, not Crysis, nothing else I've found will kill a computer like Co* can, and if the program can, it won't do it nearly as fast.

    ig4dev.dll error

Intel graphics driver issue. Downloading the latest driver from your motherboard/laptop manufacturer is recommended, although, depending on the graphics solution, it may not be compatible.

Please look at 'Read This' below, and post up the Helper log, which should help us pinpoint the issue, maybe. It would also be recommended to post up the Hijack This log as well.

  6. Ah, and then you type the 'cordless' post. Well... If it's Microsoft, that is your issue, IMO. Microsoft wireless mice are *banned* in my area. I won't work with them any longer. They are teh suck. Things like this are the reason. I'm a firm believer in the Logitech wireless. But not adding their software, unless I *have* to...

In any case, you need to try a wired one. I know, you don't want the cord... but... well... you're testing things. Gotta try it.

And in regards to the reciever, moving it could make a difference. Could be a signal bounce or absorb somewhere. And not too close, that can cause it to not work either. Opposite sides of the monitor works pretty good as long as they're on the same side (in front-ish)
  7. Besides the fact that I have the firm revulsion for Wireless Microsoft Mice, I have seen this in another fashion. More with cheaper Microsoft mice, but with mice in general. I'm not saying this is your problem, but I speak it nonetheless, because people are rather amazed when I show them the solution in person, and then explain it. And I've seen it dozens of times.

Is any of the surface you are moving your mouse on tinted red in any way? Transitional red, like a black surface with red print? Change your surface to another color, get rid of the red.

Anything that as a red tint in the surface, like cherry wood, red mouse pads, mouse pads with red print or even maroon and pink, and especially those that are mostly white with a red tint transitional print, will cause some mice to go nutz0rz.

*Even though* the mice as supposed to 'read' the bumps of surface it's on (which is why glass smooth surfaces don't work), there is a color factor involved. Matte black pads are best, especially the textured ones, followed by a dark green or blue. White is ok as long as it's white, or black and white. Even the fuzzy pads that used to be the dirge of ball mice are welcome things to the optical mice world.

But introduce any red tint to the surface, and the mouse now has trouble 'seeing' the surface... because, lo and behold, most mice are using a red colored light to bounce off the surface.

Why is that important? Read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anaglyp...anaglyph_works

The important thing to note is that the red filter lens basically hides the reds, and blacks out the blues. The result is that the red light now cannot be seen correctly.

Same thing here. Because the light is trying to bounce on a red tint, the light doesn't bounce "right", and the mouse is, in effect, blinded.

It's really apparent on the transitional pieces, and really shows up with a red/blue tinted ink pattern. Also, cherry wood won't work, but oak does. It's a really odd phenomena until you see it in person.

Now, that I've worn out another keyboard, I hope that helps ya in some way...
  8. Hm.

Well, you *may* have to copy the updater to another location, say, the desktop. Not a shortcut, an actual copy. And run that. It may be trying to lock the original in the Co* directory is why you're getting that error.

    So... I did that.

Wow... they've gotten *really* messy... all kinds of stuff on the deskop gets put there... odd. However, the thing ran as many as I wanted, no errors. So the lock thing is probably what's going on there.

Given that, I feel you must now make a temp directory somewhere (say... on the deskop) and plonk the updater there. Run that one over and over.

    ---

Although it's a low occurance issue, I still feel, as I have from day one of my first issue with the updater, that a download area for... I dunno... *pieces* of the game, say, update1.exe, update.exe, etc. At least that way, it can be chunkified, pasted together, and most importantly, downloaded with a download manager, which would have to be infinitely better than the current system... at least for those who are having the issue.

I'm also of the opinion that a *verifiable* problem plagued user should be the only one who can do this, and must go through support to get a one time username/password to get these things... although I don't know how that'll work with the download manager... Hm. Quandry at best.

    Big gigantic updates suck.

  10. Posted in the Announcement of Arc thread, but I formally present you all with the following affront to mission creation... behold, my genius, mad as it is:

Arc Name: So... you're all that, eh?
    Arc ID: 242978
Faction: Mixed up mess 'o them.
    Creator Global/Forum Name: @houtex
    Difficulty Level: Hard+
Synopsis: For **ANY** level, 1-50. Maybe not for the feint of heart. This has 10 collections, each of which will spawn an LT, Boss, or EB.. maybe higher depeding on your reputation. You'll have to go find them... or maybe they'll find you. It's a concept. You'll likely die. Try it!
Estimated Time to Play: Depends on your "all that"-iness. Anywhere from 10 minutes to 2 days, give or take 5 minutes.

A little more detail is suggested in the Announcement thread, so here goes.

I wondered to my self. I said, "Self? So... I wonder how many think their character is 'all that'. I wonder how many bosses I can find that can allow any level character, from a lowly brand new weaned off the... creator Level 1 at Challenge Level 1 to a Mighty Awesome and Win Level 50 at Challenge Level 5, to see just how 'all that' they really are... or possibly put them in their place... maybe show the [censored] in the armor they might need to patch."
[interesting... a small piece of broken off or unprotected armor is a bad word? 'Cmon now... that's getting silly. I get it, but that's still silly.]

And so... this abomination was born. Fully available for *any* character, 1-50, bad or good (or indifferent.) And if you wanna team with it... well, heck, have fun! But it's really meant for solo use...

    Full disclosure:
Outdoor carnie map, on which you'll have 10 items to hunt down and 'collect'.
Each item then spawns a 'boss' (which might be anything from an LT up to an EB.. or more?) and his/her posse... somewhere. You'll have to find those too, and defeat them.
Each boss is of a different faction. The list is as follows:
    Boss of Snakes
    Boss of Arachnos
    Boss of Paragon Police
    Boss of Longbow
    Boss of Nictus
    Boss of Council
    Boss of Hydra
    Boss of Tuatha de Dannon
    5th of Boss
Special Guest Star: Boss of Pet

Also on the map are a buncha little somethings that wandered offa graveyard, and are probably nasty little buggers to deal with.
And... just for extra flavor... some ambushes might happen. Depends.

So, that's enough reading. Go get em. If you think you can.

    /doubt it.
    //prove me wrong.
///and tell me how it sucks... I already know, but tell me anyway. Feed my ego.
  11. Please have a look at the 'Read This' linky below. The second post, IIRC, covers the vast majority of the connection issues with the updater.

You might also try the satellite users trick of running multiple updaters (up to 20) at the same time until one of them connects, closing all the others at that time. It's been known to work.

    Hope that helps! Good luck!

Got a quick question for you, S_T. Do *laptop* screens have a native resolution, and if they do, how do you determine what it is?

My work laptop is driving me nuts--I've tried several resolutions, and none of them seem quite right.

    Thanks!

    [/ QUOTE ]

I'm not S_T, but I stayed in Holiday Inn Express last night...

All LCD type monitors are fixed resolution, aka native. To determine what that's supposed to be, the hit or miss method works ok, but you can always... well, ok, mostly... go to the manufacturer website and search up your laptop's model number. Or google it, it's amazing what google will show up with.

For example, just pulling one out of my head (after looking at hp.com first), an HP dv6z laptop's resolution is 1366x768. And if you google 'hp dv6z resolution' you get this:

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...p;oq=&aqi=

And the 4th one down has it right there (as of this posting)

    So... maybe I helped?
  14. I'm going to chime in here again and ask:

Did you read the second post in "Read This" below? Because it has all the steps you can try regarding this issue.

Another thing to try, if you're on some satellite/cell/? service that's not truly wired, is to run up to 20 updaters, one after the other, until you see one that gets connected.

It's rather hit or miss, but typically, any and all updater issues are *external* to the game servers. I.e., the path to them from your computer, or your computer itself.

    Good luck!

  21. Got beat by Doomlord because I'm talkative. Oh well, I'm still posting it!

Kinda wish ya had asked this in your other thread. People are going to need that info from there. However, I'll help a little:

Going off the specs for your case/mobo combination, as well as what the old motherboard was set up for:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docum...286&lang=en

I did a search in Newegg as best I could. AMD people might be better suited to be absolutely sure I got it right, but here's the results of my search:

    MicroATX form factor
    240 Pin Memory (DDR2)
    Athlon 64 X2

My particular requirements, others may vary:
    Gigabyte
    AMD chipset.

    The results:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLis...alue=757%3A7619

    And my pick:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128342

Although this will limit you to two sticks of memory. If you want 4, then this one:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128379

Now, again, I'm a pretty strict guy when it comes to certain things. I'm not an AMD CPU guy, I'm an Intel/Intel guy. I only use Gigabyte. For *years* that policy has never steered me wrong.

However, as you want to stick with the chip you have, I see no reason to compromise on my motherboard maker selection. And given that I've seen some... wonky... things when NVidia chipsets are used, I figured the AMD chipset is the way to go. Used to be AMD/Via, but now it's AMD/AMD.

Others will likely point you to an Asus or something. (as has been done. Heh.) It's your call. I'm just very picky about motherboards and such.

Overload, right? Sorry... Hope it helps!

  24. Exactly, although I'm not certain the key is locked to a specific series of HP models, or if any HP branded motherboard will do.

I have my suspicions that the OEM VLK would work with any HP computer... but I have no way to verify that. I suspect for sure you're looking, at the very least, to find another a1700n chassis and rob stuff from that maybe.
  25. Ok, first off, is this your pc?
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/prodi...=en&lang=en

Second... did it come with the Vista that you've been running or did you use a retail upgrade for Vista?

If you said yes to the first one, and yes to "it came with this Vista"... I think you are stuck with getting a replacement from HP... because the key that came with that computer for your Windows Vista is going to ONLY work on an HP motherboard. Microsoft won't allow you to put another motherboard from anyone else in that machine and have *that* Vista, or a Vista installed with that key, run.

You might ask why, so I'll tell ya: HP, Dell, etc, get the operating system we pay $200 for at the store, $120 for as an OEM, for about $30 per for the OEM VLKs. (Change the $s for your flavor of Windows accordingly.) With that kind of discount, and the wording of the license, them VLKs only work with the make of motherboard in question. In this case, HP. Microsoft knows this key is for an HP only, and therefore you won't get online validation to work, and phoning them will get you the answer above.

Now, ready for some more bad news? Well, guess what?

    http://h20141.www2.hp.com/hpparts/search...h_Multi_Product

If you try to find the mobo using that, you'll find that HP doesn't offer it any more. I'm guessing they ran out. You'll have to talk to HP to find out if there's another one they offer, or if you're outta luck. If the latter, dude, I don't know, but I'm guessing a copy of Vista and possibly a new case to stick all this in might be in order to get back on the road of 'running'.

Now, I'm not saying it's not *possible* to put a new, different mobo in there... I'm saying that Vista won't like it, and Microsoft won't let you make it right. As far as my experiences with this go anyway. I've never been successful, anyway.

But then again, I don't cheat. I used to write software so I get the concept, and pay my way like a good little consumer.
